FUT Hairline and Crown Restoration – Case Study

Our patient travelled to us from the state of New Mexico sharing that he had done a lot of research on a hair transplant surgery, and wanted to meet with Dr. Amir Yazdan to receive an unbiased surgical recommendation.

Being that Dr. Yazdan regularly performs both FUE and FUT/Strip surgeries he discussed both options with this patient and went over the pros and cons of each hair transplant surgery method.  Ultimately the patient decided to move forward with the FUT/Strip procedure. This method allows Dr. Yazdan to harvest more grafts in one sitting which meant we could address both the patients empty crown area as well as his hairline.

Almost a year later our patient has returned to share his life changing results.

Celebrity Hair Transplant Gone Wrong – Justin Bieber

Everyone is talking about Justin Bieber’s new look, could it be the results of a hair transplant procedure? That is what we all suspect, and to the common person it may seem like it was done well. Let’s take a look at the transformation .

As you can see Bieber has a new an improved fuller and much to straight hairline. Additionally, the hairline looks unnatural and plug like which is most likely from multiple hair grafts being placed incorrectly.  When reconstructing a hairline single hair grafts should be used in the very front to keep the authenticity of his original hairline. Unfortunately for Bieber he has multiple issues from this first procedure and we are not sure he is even aware.

Learn from this very public mistake, Dr. Amir Yazdan here at Modena Hair institute practices a more conservative approach for a hair transplant procedure. He prefers to keep the patient’s original hairline as a guide rather than completely changing the way the patient looks. This produces natural and age appropriate results for our patients. Remember that the transplanted grafts are permanent. Bieber will be stuck with this insanely straight and low hairline for pretty much the rest of his life. Imagine being 50-60 years old with that hairline. Also consider the possibility of him losing some of the hair behind his new hairline, then what?

When considering a hair transplant take the time to do some meaningful research. Ask the right questions, see reputable surgeons who specialize only in hair, pay attention to whether they perform both procedures, and lastly review the information and use common sense.

How We Design Your Restored Hairline

When somebody looks you straight in the face your hairline is one of the first things they’re bound to see. We all know that first impressions often exert a significant influence on subsequent interactions. Now unfortunately, given its prominence, the hairline is often one of the first regions of the scalp where thinning is observed in men with genetically patterned hair loss. For these reasons, surgically rebuilding the hairline is a matter of special attention and importance for our hair transplant specialists.
Given its central importance for the overall aesthetic effectiveness of the hair transplant procedure new patients are almost universally inclined to ask what their restored hairline will look like. Some of them haven’t had a hairline to speak of for years and the questions of shape and symmetry are important. Hairlines can be flat and well defined, symmetrical, asymmetrical, staggered, feathered, and may or may not involve a widow’s peak. The truth is that, in the face of such bewildering options, there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to restored hairlines. Aesthetics are highly individual and what looks good on one patient may not flatter the facial features of another. The treatment that would be called for in the case of a young patient with progressive and uncertain loss would often not be the same as that required by an older patient with more stable and limited hair loss. To put it briefly, hairlines must be carefully considered, designed and customized for every patient individually.
Now, let’s talk about some of the specific ways Dr. Amir Yazdan goes about restoring our patients hairlines. The ancient Greeks were fond of saying that beauty lies in harmony and proportion. Therefore, in designing the curve and overall shape of your hairline our specialists will carefully take account of the general shape of your face. For example, people with wider faces tend to have better results with a wider arching hairline. Conversely those whose facial features are more narrow often find that ideal results are achieved by designing a narrower curve for the hairline.
The most natural looking results occur when the hairline compliments the natural shape of a patient’s face; therefore, a hairline placed too high or too low on the forehead will lead to unappealing results. Individual hairlines are also seldom perfectly straight and our specialists have found that often angling the restored hairline up or down is necessary for achieving the most natural looking results. Here at Modena Hair Institute Dr. Yazdan implements the latest digital imaging software to determine the ideal position of your restored hairline.
Besides a general consideration of facial aesthetics Dr. Yazdan can work from any older photos you may have to recreate a hairline very much like the one you used to have. We find that consulting photos of a patient before balding to be an invaluable point of reference for achieving optimal results. These old photos will be studied to achieve a better idea of what your hairline was like. Consulting reference photos are a great help in producing natural results and in convincingly recreating your appearance.
Doing the exact same hairline on two different patients almost never happens. Hair transplants are carefully personalized procedures and the way one patient’s hairline ‘ought to look’ is always unique and highly individual. This is because transplanted hairlines must be customized. Patients must be careful to select clinics who are able to showcase a wide variety of hairlines; not a single stock hairline that gets slapped, assembly line style, onto the head of every patient who comes through the door.
Your surgeon must take all the relevant aspects into account and, after careful deliberation, craft a plan that fits your individual case as precisely as possible. A carefully personalized hairline can only turn out one way: natural and flattering. When considering clinics, be sure to ask the doctor what he or she plans to do for your specific hairline, their reasoning for recommending such an approach, and ask to see examples of other similar hairlines if available. Otherwise, you may end up in the awkward situation of asking a second doctor what your hairline should have looked like, and whether or not they can possibly salvage it with a further procedure.

The Importance of Direction and Angling in Hair Transplantation

direction in hair transplant
Hair transplant experts pride themselves on creating hairlines which are natural and elegantly undetectable.
Creating such a cosmetically flawless hairline requires mastery of hairline design, something our own Dr. Yazdan has been internationally recognized for. Artistry and care must be used to decide where the grafts are placed. For men, this involves angling the transplanted hair forward and in a pattern that is consistent with the existing hairline.
Dr. Yazdan explains: “The directional growth of transplanted hair is dependent on the direction of the incision and placement of that graft.
Hairline incisions are made in the exact direction the hair at the frontal hairline naturally grows, which is angled. This will give a natural and undetected appearance. If the incisions are created improperly, it will give a manufactured look.
As such, the surgeon you choose to go with must be a technical expert and follicular artist who is very methodical in the directional placement of each graft. Hair grows at different angles in various areas of the scalp, and it is up to the surgeon to angle the incision appropriately for each area.
For example, when transplanting hair for the crown, recreating a whorl or cowlick will require some of the most technically precise work in hair transplantation. Recreating a cowlick is very careful and exacting work wherein every receptor incision is precisely angled around the spiral axis matching every subtle shift in angulation. See some of Modena’s best examples below:

Anytime there is a whorl such as those that occur in the crown, more scalp shows through because of the natural separation of hairs. Thus, when restoring a cowlick, higher density is required to hide the scalp than if the hairs are all transplanted in the same direction. This all being said, cowlicks, undulations, and widow’s peaks are the ‘elegant’ details of a handsome hairline, and when they are reproduced accurately some of the best-looking hairlines results are achieved.
At Modena Hair Institute in Orange County, Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, we believe that the best hairlines are recreated only by observing the highest artistic principles of graft direction and angulation.

Case Study – FUE Receding Hairline Restoration Transplant

Patient presented with severe receded hairline hair loss, at just age 25. He began noticing the hairline receding at age 16 and noted his father and both grandfathers also have a receded hairline. The severity of his receding aged him and took a toll on his self confidence.

The patient’s hair goals were to restore the hairline with minimal scarring. Upon consultation and comprehensive evaluation, Dr. Yazdan and the patient decided on the FUE method of hair transplantation. FUE transplants produce minimal scarring and supply a sufficient amount of grafts for a hairline restoration procedure.

Hairline restoration cases like these can take anywhere from 500-2500 grafts depending on the severity of the hair loss and the goals of the patient. Dr. Yazdan worked with the patient to design a hairline that look natural, age-appropriate, and mimicked his hairline prior to the hair loss. Pictures show the patient immediately after the FUE hair transplant procedure. Approximately 1800 grafts were used for this procedure.

Hairline restoration surgery

A receding hairline is one of the most common types of hair loss, especially for men. A receding hairline can be very alarming and disappointing for many, as unlike other types of hair loss (crown balding, diffuse thinning), a receding hairline is extremely noticeable.
A receding hairline is usually one of the first signs of hair loss. To make matters worse, it can prematurely age you. One major factor in a youthful appearance is a full, healthy, natural looking hairline. And while many hair-care products tote claims of restoring hair to its previous glory, they are typically not strong enough to make any real difference.
One viable and effective options for those suffering from a receding hairline is hairline restoration surgery. Hairline restoration is a type of hair transplant surgery that involves extracting grafts from a quality donor area (usually the back of the scalp) and placing them in a natural formation in the hairline.
Hairline restoration surgery restores the appearance of the hairline in a natural way. Unlike hair plugs, which have an abrupt, thick, dense start, and give a noticeable appearance of fake hair, hairline restoration grafts are placed in such a way that mimics the natural growth of your hairline. Hair follicles come in different sizes (containing 1 hair, 2, 3, or 4). Our natural hairline has 1’s in the forefront, followed by 2’s, 3’s, and 4’s. Because hair transplantation involves your own hair being hand selected and placed, the surgeon is able to give you a natural hairline restoration that no one will notice you had a procedure done. You’ll have your old hairline back!
