Body Hair Transplant for Amazing Results

Fortunately for many patients with hair loss new technology and techniques have made it possible for us to use hair from other parts of the body – such as the chest, beard, arms, or legs – in hair restoration surgery.

We can leverage the advantages of a hair-by-hair reconstruction of your natural hairline to dramatically improve aesthetic appearance and cover any spots on the scalp which appear to be thinning.

If you’re experiencing hair loss you may have considered a hair transplant to restore growth to balding areas. Using FUE (the gold standard method), we can harvest hair from other body areas without leaving behind a visible, unattractive scar.

What’s the Difference between Scalp and Body Hair?

Transplantation of body hair is a type of follicular unit extraction (FUE) in which donor hairs are taken from areas of the body such as the beard, chest or back. An extraction tool is used to remove enough hairs to cover the desired area on the head, and these hairs are transplanted to reverse the visible effects of hair loss.

There are several great instances in which body hair may be harvested instead of scalp hair:

  1. Scalp donor sites are thin and worn down
  2. Body hair thickness can be richer than scalp hair
  3. Additional donor sites are sometimes required
  4. You want to conceal a scar from a previous transplant procedure
  5. Covering patchy hair loss

Your expert hair transplant doctor can tell you if you have enough of the right type of body hair for a transplant to be successful.

Body hair has different characteristics than hair on the scalp.

As with all surgery, hair transplants carry risks of pain, bleeding and scarring. Body hair transplantation also requires tremendous experience, cosmetic craftsmanship and expert abilities. It’s best to work with a doctor first to rule out medical conditions or nutritional deficiencies as the cause of hair loss. Correcting these problems can stop or reverse the advancement of bald areas without surgery.

Case Study: Body Hair Transplant and Strip Scar Revision

*This blog is a transcription of a video covering a Modena Hair Institute patient who saw Dr. Yazdan for a body hair transplant and strip scar revision. We’ve included the video below.

Sam has visited Modena Hair Institute in Orange County, California. Before coming to us, he had two strip procedures; one in 2003 and one in 2004, which left him with unacceptable scarring and unfavorable results overall. His scar is uneven, wide, and protrudes from the base of the skull.

In most scar revision procedures, Dr. Yazdan can excise the previous scar and close it with a unique technique that allows hair to grow through the scar, thus greatly minimizing its appearance. However, after some examination, the doctor determines Sam’s donor zone is very poor, leaving only the option of a FUE, or follicular unit extraction procedure.

Sam’s strip scar, before revision.

As the patient would like both the scar repaired & some density added to the crown and midsection of the scalp, it’s decided the plan is to extract grafts by FUE from the back of the head, as well as supplementing with grafts from the beard. The grafts will then be placed inside the scar, as well as in the crown and midsection. After local anesthesia, Dr. Yazdan and his team begin the extraction of grafts from both the posterior scalp and beard.

Because of the unique micropunch used during the procedure, within three to four days after the procedure, there will be no scarring left in any affected areas. This technique allows Dr. Yazdan to perform body hair transplantation with minimal to no residual scarring. After the first phase of the procedure, the 1,029 extracted grafts are processed & examined under microscope while Dr. Yazdan created the graft-receiving zones along the patient’s transplant area. The small diameter of these zones ensures a grouping density that looks as natural as any regular person’s hairline.

Sam’s strip scar, immediately after the procedure is finished.

During the implantation stage, the team works to carefully and efficiently place the grafts with extreme attention to detail. Even in the middle of this process, improvement can be noticed in the scar area, and it even looks presentable at that point. Bleeding is minimal, and protrusion has become a non-issue in turn. With that, the procedure is complete, the donor and recipient areas are washed, a bandage is applied, and he goes home with a follow-up planned for the next day.

Sam’s story might be very similar to yours, or you might be going through a whole different hair loss experience entirely. Either way, we’re ready to welcome you here at Modena Hair Institute. Visit our website to learn more, and be sure to call or book your consultation today.

Facial Hair Loss: Can a Hair Transplant be Performed on a Patchy Beard?

Say bye-bye to patchy facial hair! If you’re one of the millions of sparsely-bearded men on the hunt to fix your patchy beard, it’s important to strive for actual, proven methods. With that said – is a hair transplant one of them? The simple answer is YES, you can now get the beard you always wanted…
You may have heard people saying that “it’s all in the genes” and there’s nothing that can be done to fix a patchy beard, right? Wrong. That certainly isn’t the case and with the evolution of hair transplants and a skilled hair restoration surgeon like Dr. Yazdan, a beard hair transplant is a minor and minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that repairs a patchy beard…or any facial hair for that matter!
“Facial hair loss is an extremely common problem, especially on the area of the cheeks. The cheek area has considerably weaker blood flow than the area of the upper lip and chin, this means that over time less nutrients and our beard-growing hormones – testosterone and DHT – make it to the cheek area, resulting in patchy, thin facial hair” Dr. Yazdan explains.
“The cold, hard truth is that not all beards are created equal. For every Hugh Jackman, there are at least a dozen sad, scruffy Keanu Reeves out there” Yazdan facetiously adds.
Just as with a hair transplant on the head, the donor hair for a facial hair transplant comes from the back or sides of your scalp, and in most cases, using the FUE technique. Depending how much facial hair loss you have and the look you’re going for – the traditional FUT/strip hair transplant may also be recommended. Which site and technique are used generally depends on the amount of hair needing to be transplanted and which part of the donor area Dr. Yazdan feels will yield the closest countertype of facial hair; sometimes it’s the back of the scalp, while other times it’s the sides of the scalp – between the ears. Dr. Yazdan will oftentimes harvest hairs from the very back of the head to match the mustache and goatee region as well as the cheeks while donor hairs from the sides are mostly used for the sideburns and posterior part of the cheeks. Once the grafts have been transplanted, the hairs are permanent and typically grow just like the rest of your facial hair with similar texture and other characteristics. The transplanted hair can be trimmed, shaved, and groomed just as you would other facial hair.

As a well-qualified and experienced hair restoration surgeon, Dr. Yazdan uses modern technology and technique to extract and transplant a combination of single and two-hair grafts in order to optimize density while maintaining a natural look that cannot be detected by the naked eye. It’s also crucial for the surgeon to be tactful in his/her artistry in placing the grafts in the correct angle and direction of your natural facial hair. For our salt-n-pepper patients in which gray hair is also needed, Dr. Yazdan strategically extracts and distributes gray hairs to intermix with your natural hair color in order for a nice, even flow to your new and improved beard.
Tip #1: We understand not everyone is ready and willing to seek a hair restoration physician for their facial hair loss, so we’ve included a non-surgical proven treatment to regrow that splotchy beard – combining the use of Minoxidil (FDA approved for hair loss) with GroMD’s Follicle Activator Spray has shown remarkable results in facial hair regrowth and density.
Tip #2: Just like going to the barber for your haircut, you’re best off bringing in a photograph of the style and shape you desire. This way you and your surgeon of choice are on the same page and you can dictate how you want your new beard to look.

Is it possible to get a hair transplant with someone else’s hair as the donor area?

This is actually a rather common question we receive on the message boards. Whether an individual lacks quality donor hair or just doesn’t like the color and texture of their hair, some wonder if they can have hair transplanted that is not their own.
While this may sound like a nice solution to a problem, it unfortunately is not possible. If we were to transplant hair into your scalp that is not your own, it would initiate an immune response that would not only reject the hair but also leave the scalp in a very unpleasant, infected state.
If you are interested in hair transplant surgery, but concerned about the quality of your donor hair area, you may have other areas on your body hair can be extracted from other than that most commonly used back of scalp. Body hair transplants are a viable option for many individuals seeking hair transplantation with an insufficient scalp donor area.
If you are interested in hair transplant surgery because you are not fond of your natural hair or texture, you have not found a proper treatment in hair transplantation. Hair transplant surgery is designed for those suffering from hair loss or for those looking to add hair to an area without (such as lowering the hairline). Hair surgery is not a viable option for those wishing to change their hair’s texture. For this, you will likely need to discuss options with an experienced hair stylist. There are many hair treatments such as keratin therapy that can alter the hair’s textures.

How effective is body hair for scalp hair transplantation?

Many individuals who seek a hair transplant to solve their balding concerns turn out to not be the best candidates for the procedure. Why? Because their scalp doesn’t have sufficient quality hairs in their donor area.
The donor area is typically the area at the back of the scalp. With both FUE and FUT/strip surgeries, follicles are extracted from the back of the scalp and transplanted into the recipient zone (balding area). But, there are other areas of the body that can be used for a donor area in the event the scalp lacks quality donor hairs.
Typically, the beard, chest, and back are the first, second, and third choices for donor body hair. That being said, body hair transplants are not the right choice for every patient. While some may be good body hair candidates and have successful hair transplants from body hair, others may not.
Many factors determine if a body hair transplant will be effective for you. Ultimately, we’re looking for the body hair to be a similar match to the scalp hair. That way, it will blend in as it grows, maintaining uniformity throughout. If the body hair is drastically different than the scalp hair (curly vs straight, coarse vs thin) than the look may not be the most desirable. The idea is that no one will be able to tell you had a hair transplant, and the hair transplant looks like your natural hair prior to hair loss.
To determine if you’re a candidate for scalp or body hair transplantation you should meet with a hair restoration surgeon for a hair evaluation. Make sure to thoroughly do your research prior to committing to a surgeon, as not all surgeons are skilled in body hair transplantation.

Does a weak donor area make you incompatible for hair transplant surgery?

Both FUE and FUT/Strip methods of hair transplant surgery rely on a healthy and sufficient donor area to extract grafts from for transplantation. If your donor area does not contain enough healthy, strong follicles to extract, it can complicate the hair transplant. Possible complications are not being able to extract as many grafts as are needed or the follicles are too weak and do not withstand the trauma of transplantation, dying off once transferred.
It can be very upsetting and disheartening for someone who’s decided on hair transplant surgery to restore their hair loss to learn they do not have a quality donor area. Thankfully, advancements in hair transplant surgeries have made it possible to extract grafts from other areas of the body. The most common donor area for the majority of individuals is the back of the head near the base. But, in cases where there is not a suitable donor area on the scalp, body hair can be used, considering there is enough quality hair to extract. Common body hair donor areas are the chest, back, and even the beard.
Because body hair grows in differently than scalp hair, you can expect minor discrepancies in the way the hair grows in once transplanted. For most male hair transplant patients, this is not an issue.  Keep in mind that the rate of body hair growth may differ from the rate of your scalp hair growth. This can effect the way the hair grows in initially after transplantation. For most patients, we see desired results between 6 months – 1 year post-surgery.
Body hair transplants are a great alternative for those who are ready for hair transplant surgery but have a weak scalp donor area. Here at Modena, we’ve completed hundreds of successful body hair transplants. If you are interested in finding out if you are a candidate for body hair transplant surgery, give us a call today.
