Hair Transplant Payment Plans

Often we hear that while a hair transplant operation would be the most helpful and aesthetically life saving operation for a person, the cost is too great. There are a lot of affordable home remedies for treating hair loss that many of our patients try as an alternative to a medical-grade procedure. While you may have to end up spending money to take proper care of your scalp, you don’t have to do it in a way that leaves you overspending. How Long Will My Hair Transplant Last?

A hair transplant will give you a beautifully restored head of hair, but does it last? Here at Modena Hair Institute we occasionally hear from concerned prospective patients who, while admiring the fine results of our finished hair transplants, are nonetheless concerned that, given enough time, their newly restored hair will eventually thin and fall out. The good news for you is that this is absolutely not the case. Transplanted hair follicles are harvested from a region of the scalp (called the ‘permanent zone’) that is genetically resistant to hair loss; therefore, most patients can expect their newly implanted hair to last forever.
The two most commonly employed hair restoration procedures — Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) are intended as lifelong solutions to hair loss. The two methods work like this:
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) – In FUE individual hair follicles are removed from a donor area of the scalp and are transplanted to the area in need.  No stitches or sutures are required for this minimally invasive procedure.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) – In FUT a strip of scalp tissue is removed from the donor area. The scalp tissue is then separated into individual grafts for the needed areas of the scalp.
The transplant should grow as hair normally. In both the FUE and FUT procedure transplanted hair is harvested from the permanent zones— also known as the donor area — on the back and sides of the scalp and skillfully transferred to the thinning and balding areas of the front, top, and crown.
It is, however, important to remember that hair transplants (like any other surgical procedure) are not without certain caveats. The results furnished by a hair transplant may vary depending on a number of factors and limitations. Although  the vast majority of  hair restorations do provide natural-looking and healthy results, some limiting factors to consider include:
Choice of clinic: Techniques employed for hair restoration procedures have improved dramatically over the years and it is essential to find a clinic whose practitioners are well informed regarding all of the latest developments in the field. Top-rated clinics consistently achieve a large graft to growth success rate. Unfortunately, many sub-standard clinics exist. Moreover many so-called ‘bargain’ hair transplants, especially those performed overseas or by underqualified practitioners, can be downright dangerous and leave patients with severe scarring. Doing your own research, exercising good judgement and reading written testimonials of former patients is essential. Many surgeons consistently deliver effective and beautiful results; do your due diligence to ensure that you are in good hands before you go under the knife.
Biological Factors: We must accept that hair transplants do not work for everyone, nor are they a miracle cure. Advanced hair loss, for example, can be particularly difficult to address; patients whose hair follicles have remained dormant for two to seven years and/or those with particularly thin hair in the donor area will often experience less satisfactory results. Of course, this doesn’t mean that dramatic cosmetic results are impossible to achieve, just that initial expectations should be set lower. In most cases some well placed transplant hairs produce a far more pleasing, vigorous and youthful aesthetic effect than no hair at all.
Continuing Hair Loss: While the transplant itself should keep growing forever, the same can not necessarily be said about the rest of your hair. While hair transplants do not prevent future hair loss in regions of the scalp not covered by a transplant, they do help cover them. Effective treatments for continuous hair loss exist and our specialists are always happy to discuss any concerns or anxieties you may have regarding our treatment options.
Adequate Donor Area Capacity: The size of the permanent zones vary according to individual genetic factors. A larger donor area allows for more grafts to be harvested and furnishes our practitioners with a greater number of hairs to work with for the transplant. Patients with relatively small permanent zones should modify their  expectations in regards to the amount of coverage that can be achieved. However, as mentioned previously, truly skilled transplant surgeons can still often produce impressive results even when confronted with sparse material to work with.
Shock Loss: Transplant hair may fall out due to shock shortly after surgery. This is a normal and expected physiological response and nothing to be alarmed by. The new follicles remain and you should expect to see significant growth within the course of a few months.
Both FUE and FUT are permanent procedures. The donor area of the scalp, from which hair follicles are harvested, isn’t called the ‘permanent zone’ for no reason. Hair harvested from this region of the scalp is genetically programmed to never fall out. However, while some patients who receive a hair transplant will later opt for another due to further thinning of non-treated areas, you can rest content knowing that, under normal circumstances, the direct results provided by FUE or FUT are there to stay forever.

Are FUE Hair Transplants Safe?

You’ve heard about the excellent results many people have achieved through hair transplants but a small question still nags at your mind and holds you back- ‘Are these procedures safe?’ Having some concern and apprehension before any surgical treatment is the most natural thing in the world. However, to allay any fears let’s take some time to have a realistic look at the benefits and costs of the two most common methods of hair transplantation- follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE).
Many patients are intrigued by FUE because it offers dramatic hair restoration benefits with minimal scarring along the scalp. Sometimes, however, the Modena Hair Institute receives inquiries from interested, but naturally apprehensive, individuals about FUE’s potential risks.
Understanding is always the best antidote to fear. Therefore, let’s go over the basics of the FUE procedure to better understand its general safety. Any surgical procedure will always carry some risk but, realistically speaking, proper and careful pre-planning combined with the tried and true expertise of our medical professionals ensures that any risk will be negligible.
The actual Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedure works like this: individual hair follicles are removed from a donor area of the scalp and are transplanted to the area in need. No stitches or sutures are required for this minimally invasive procedure. Donor follicles are carefully repositioned along the hairline and the crown of the scalp for the best restorative and aesthetic effect.
It is important to understand how FUE differs from FUT. Since FUE focuses on transplanting individual hair follicles there is no need to harvest a strip from the donor area of the scalp, and hence no major scarring. Patients who undergo FUE typically enjoy a swifter recovery than patients who undergo FUT. The FUE procedure also involves less physical discomfort. The price of FUE treatment is generally more expensive than that of FUT.
FUE carries with it certain small risks. It is possible for the donor follicles to become damaged during the transplant and there is also a small risk that the procedure may result in an uneven distribution of donor follicles across the area of treatment. However, such risks are highly unlikely when working with a skillful and experienced transplant surgeon like Dr. Amir Yazdan.
During your visit to Modena Hair Institute, we can go over these matters with you personally. By understanding your specific treatment needs we will be certain to provide you with the highest standard of safe and effective care.
Generally FUE is a very safe and reliable option for those seeking hair restoration therapy. Our personalized process of screening and consultation ensures that FUE is only performed on those patients for whom our professions deem it to be the best course of treatment. We carefully evaluate several factors in potential candidates for FUE. For example, is the scalp skin loose and healthy? Is there sufficient donor hair available? And can viable follicular units be extracted from without doing serious tissue or nerve damage in the process? As always our professionals are happy to discuss any concerns or individual needs which you may have.
FUE yields very dramatic results; a full and natural-looking head of hair and a significantly more youthful appearance. Often, our patients also report an increased sense of well-being and confidence. Being a minimally invasive procedure you can expect the scarring around the donor area of the scalp to heal well with no visible trace of the hair restoration procedure remaining.
So, is FUE right for you?
The best way to find out if FUE is right for you is to visit our practice for a personalized consultation. We’ll be delighted to answer any and all of your questions in detail and to address any specific safety or health related concerns that you may have. In case FUE isn’t the right course of treatment for you, we can discuss FUT and why that procedure may be better and safer given your specific needs.
To learn more about FUE and your many other options for restoring your hair, be sure to contact our skilled hair restoration specialists. Your best head of hair is waiting and our specialists are eagerly awaiting your call or email. We look forward to hearing from you!

Hairline Design: How Hair Restoration Specialists Acheive Amazing Results

We all agree that first impressions matter. Your hairline, in a very real way, makes your hair’s ‘first impression’ to the world and has a profound effect on your facial appearance. As such, the Modena Hair Institute’s team has extensive experience helping patients to conquer hair loss with the latest cutting-edge surgical treatments. As always, individual factors will play a role in determining the course of your treatment. Age, gender, facial shape, racial and/or ethnic background, and the extent of the hairloss are all factors which Dr. Amir Yazdan at Modena Hair Institute will take into careful consideration when planning your individualized course of treatment. With a little consideration anyone can achieve remarkable, natural-looking results through surgical restoration and recreation of their original hairline.
How Hair Restoration Specialists Acheive Amazing Results
There are many ways in which hair transplant surgeons may design and recreate a patient’s thinning hairline. Consulting past photos of patients before their balding is an invaluable reference point for achieving optimal results. These old photos will be studied to achieve a better idea of what your hairline was like. Consulting reference photos are a great help in producing natural results and in convincingly recreating your appearance.
Proper hair density also must be taken into account. As your hairline is your hair’s ‘first impression’, specialists may focus first on the density of your frontal hairline rather than on the crown of your head to achieve ideal results. The hair grafts must be staggered too, rather than distributed evenly, for natural and aesthetically pleasing results.
Finding your restored hairline’s ideal position is also important and there are many key decisions to be made. A hairline placed too high or too low on the forehead will lead to unappealing results. Individual hairlines are also seldom perfectly straight and our specialists have found that often angling the restored hairline up or down is necessary for achieving the most natural looking results.

Dr. Yazdan makes use of the latest digital imaging software which, in conjunction with a careful consultation of old photos, determines the ideal position of your restored hairline.

In designing the curve and overall shape of your hairline, specialists will also take into account the shape of your face. For example, people with wider faces tend to have better results with a wider arching hairline. Conversely those whose facial features are more narrow often find that ideal results are achieved by designing a narrower curve for the hairline. The most natural looking results occur when the hairline compliments the natural shape of a patient’s face and our specialists are here to help you find the ideal aesthetic proportions of your restored hairline.
The angle of the individual hair grafts can make all the difference when it comes to natural looking results. If the hair grafts are poorly placed, the hair may seem to sprout in all directions. Carefully considering the angle of the hair in a given part of the scalp can help improve the overall results of the restoration procedure and make the hairline look totally natural.
Along with designing the ideal shape of your restored hairline comes the proper placement of the individual grafts. Proper placement of hair grafts is one of the most important factors in achieving natural looking results. Poorly placed hair grafts will seem to grow in all directions. Consequently, at Modena Hair Institute in Southern California and Las Vegas, we take the angle of hair into careful consideration when working on your hairline to ensure that the results look completely natural, healthy and aesthetically pleasing.

Monthly Hair Growth Rate of Following Hair Transplantation

Hair transplants are one of the most effective options available for those pursuing surgical hair loss treatment. Here is some important information to consider should you embark upon this course of treatment. While many patients are well pleased by the excellent results yielded by hair transplants, it is still good to keep in mind that the treatment’s full results will take several months to become noticeable.
Knowledge is power and knowing what to expect, especially after a surgical procedure, can help remove any worries you may have. Patience pays off, and most doctors and patients agree- the results are well worth the wait. With this in mind, let’s have a look at the monthly growth of hair transplants after surgery.
This information pertains on a general level to the monthly growth cycle of both follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedures.
In the initial weeks you may experience some temporary hair loss of the newly transplanted hair following surgery, but don’t be alarmed! This is very typical, and no cause for concern and the hair follicles will begin a new growth phase in the coming months.
Generally speaking, patients should expect to notice new hair growth about three months after the procedure. Every case is unique, so some individual’s growth may occur sooner than three months following treatment while, for others, initial growth may occur slightly later.
The thinner density and lighter color of the new hair growth as compared to your donor sample is a natural part of the restoration process. This, quite simply, means that the new transplanted follicles are healthy. Color, thickness and quality of the hair will continue to increase in the coming months.
Around the six or seven month mark after surgery, you should notice a clear improvement in follicle strength and quality, as well as steady hair growth in the transplant area.
At around eight months after surgery some patients may even achieve their final results, others may require a few more months. However, all patients should expect a steady improvement in hair quality throughout the coming months.
Final results should be apparent about one year after surgery as transplanted hair should achieve it’s full and final density. This is the moment you have been waiting for! Telogen effluvium and density related issues and any other side effects should all be resolved by this point.
So in summary:
Stage 1: The Initial Phase of Telogen Effluvium – After the first two months upon a successful operation, patients will experience a temporary hair fall, a condition called Telogen Effluvium.
Stage 2: Steady hair growth (2 – 5 months) – Beginnings of new hair growth! These hairs are very soft and look like new baby hair. Patients should not weary as it is a natural process of growth, which will invariably become thick in subsequent months.
Stage 3: Consistent Hair Growth phase (6 – 7 months) – At this phase, there is a noticeable consistent hair growth with a better texture. It is not the final stage; however, patients will still experience an improvement in the growth and texture of their hair.
Stage 4: Phase of Remarkable Density (8 – 9 months) – After 8 months, patients will experience a drastic improvement in the growth and quality of their hair. Some can get the ultimate growth at this phase, even without the assistance of their physician.
Stage 5: Full follicle growth achievement (10 – 12 months)

Curly vs. Straight Hair Transplants

curly hair transplant
Balding is no longer the end of one’s self esteem. Modern medical advances in hair loss treatments have made it easier than ever to restore your full and healthy locks. The latest surgical techniques derive their effectiveness from a careful consideration of the patient’s individual needs, so whatever type of hair you have is going to determine the special course of treatment we prepare for you. Quite often, hair transplants are performed differently depending on one’s hair type. Treatments differ for those with straight hair and those with curly hair.
Let’s get to know the two most common methods for performing a hair transplant and how your hair type is an important factor in determining the nature of your treatment.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) – In FUE individual hair follicles are removed from a donor area of the scalp and are transplanted to the area in need. There are no stitches or sutures required for this minimally invasive procedure.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) – In FUT a strip of scalp tissue is removed from the donor area. The scalp tissue is then separated into individual grafts for the needed areas of the scalp.
Curly vs. Straight Hair
There is a general consensus that FUT is a better course of treatment for those with straight hair. Having straight hair makes the harvesting of individual follicles easier. While FUE can take a bit of time to perform it has the added benefit of being minimally invasive and sometimes more exact.
Remember though that we are speaking about generalizations. The thickness of the hair, the nature and laxity of the scalp skin, the donor area size and the extent of balding all have an effect on the selection of the optimal surgical technique for you. Many people with straight hair have had FUT without any issues and many people with curly hair have had good results with FUE. For this reason we invite you to come in for a personalized physical consultation as opposed to doing merely online research.
Dr. Yazdan, after examining the nature of your hair and the condition of your scalp, will be happy to draw up a treatment plan for your exact needs. We will help you to achieve the healthiest and most aesthetically pleasing results.

Repairing Overharvested Donor Areas

Countless patients have visited Dr. Amir Yazdan for hair transplant repair operations. A leader in modern hair transplantation techniques, Dr. Yazdan is able to revise problems caused by botched hair transplants performed by other less trained surgeons.
One type of hair transplant repair we engage in often at Modena Hair Institute is something called ‘overharvesting’. It’s a phrase you may not be familiar with. Below, we’ll discuss what this problem is and how we can address overharvesting by using different hair restoration techniques.
What is Overharvesting?
During follicular unit extraction (FUE), thousands of hair follicles are harvested from the donor area at the back of the head in order to be placed along the top and front of the hairline where balding occurs. When too many follicular units are taken from the donor site, it can lead to:

  • Thinning hair around the donor site
  • Bald patches around the donor site
  • Visible scar tissue around the donor site

All of these above issues are signs of overharvesting, which means too many follicular units were removed, causing poor cosmetic outcomes.
Why Does Overharvesting Happen?
Overharvesting tends to be a problem with inexperienced hair restoration surgeons. When a hair transplant surgeon lacks experience, they often do not properly plan their procedure or consider factors that could impact the final results. Regardless, there are many patients in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas who have to deal with the repercussions of overharvesting because of an initial hair restoration that was poorly planned.
Problems Caused by Overharvesting
If you’ve experienced overharvesting, you know just how unsightly the bald patches and scar tissue around the back of the scalp can be. While the areas of the scalp affected by male pattern baldness are no longer an issue, the rest of a person’s hair can look patchy and unnatural. This can lead to serious self-esteem issues as well as a feeling of regret about undergoing hair restoration in the first place.
What Technique Will Be Used to Address the Problem?
The best way to treat overharvesting will usually involve alternatives to FUE. Instead, we may rely on follicular unit transplantation (FUT), which uses a strip of donor follicles taken from part of the scalp. If this is not an ideal option, we could look into nonsurgical alternatives to traditional hair restoration that will help blend the thinning or exposed scalp with the rest of your hair.
The Results of Hair Transplant Repair
Whatever technique is ultimately used, the results of a state-of-the-art hair transplant repair can be incredible. Thanks to revision of the previous hair transplant, patients will no longer have serious problems with bald patches and thinning hair around the back of the scalp. We can also improve the results of the initial procedure a great deal.

The Most Advanced Hair Transplant in Southern California

State-of-the-art hair transplantation relies on surgeons and technicians who are highly skilled, experienced and meticulously trained. This is a vital part of any hair transplant process and often overlooked by potential patients doing their research.
Our team at Modena Hair Institute has over 25 years of combined experience only in hair transplantation. Many plastic surgeons, while skilled, may do hair transplants a couple days per month to supplement income. They may do hair one day and then breast augmentation or liposuction the others. This results in a staff that lacks the experience and the regular practice to keep their skills sharp and honed.
The end result is technicians who cut the donor tissue up inefficiently, transecting hair follicles and wasting valuable donor hair.
This produces results that are sub-par and often lacking in density. In contrast, Dr. Amir Yazdan and his entire Southern California staff are passionate about hair and only do hair transplants each and every day at their Newport Beach and Beverly Hills clinics.
Over the years Dr. Yazdan has found that patients were misinformed and even mistreated at other clinics. That is why he formulated and distributed an official Consumer Alert document that clearly explains to consumers their rights, and to give them an idea of what to expect from a hair provider.

Unethically Counting Graft Numbers

Last month Dr. Yazdan of Modena Hair Institute returned to appear on Spencer Kobren’s show, The Bald Truth, to discuss the hidden and sinister ways in which some hair transplants cut corners by unethically charging patients for extra grafts which are both unnecessary and harmful to scalp tissue.
If follicular units are divided up into smaller groups, or into individual hairs, the graft numbers will significantly increase (and so will the price of the hair restoration procedure) without any increase in fullness (and probably less fullness due to sub-optimal growth.)
Certain clinics will split four-hair or three-hair grafts into four one-hair grafts or three one-hair grafts in order to charge the patient for more individual grafts. The result is not only a dramatic increase in surgical cost for the patient, but also the newly separated grafts often do not grow as well, as they would need to be spread out over more than the space that a single multi-hair graft would otherwise occupy.
Variations on this technique of graft count manipulation occur ubiquitously, especially at non-specialist clinics or clinics which rely on robotic machinery. If the microscopic dissection (dissection of multi-unit grafts into single grafts) is poor and some of the hair in the follicle is destroyed, the results will be aesthetically disastrous.
To reiterate in plainer language, these clinics both charge clients for extra unnecessary grafts (often resulting in hundreds or thousands of dollars more) and often leave them with poor, non-dense and thin looking hairlines.

Amir Yazdan: ‘Certain clinics will sell more grafts, but then cut up and dissect the grafts for no other purpose except to charge the customer more’

Spencer Kobren: ‘I’m so glad you brought this up. There are also clinics who use a larger punch purely to get more grafts, which can end up decimating the patients donor hair’.

At Modena Hair Institute, Dr. Yazdan will never divide up multi-unit grafts, except when very fine incisions are necessary. His focus is quality, density and a natural-looking hairline. To this effect, Dr. Yazdan has developed very fine surgical blades to prepare and insert multi-follicular units into his hair transplant patients’ scalps. He places the hairs carefully so they aligned with the natural direction of the hair, restoring original density and volume.

Case Study – Logan Jillkes

successful hair transplant
The Procedure
An overseas follicular unit transplant (FUT) procedure left Logan with a ‘pluggy’ hairline and a visible scar from temple to temple, so Dr. Yazdan performed a follicular unit strip method, in which hair follicles are taken from a non-balding area of the scalp and then transplanted into the thinning spots. Logan had a second procedure 11 months later to add density and further cover other thinning areas. The surgeries covered Logan’s scar and moved his temple hairline forward two inches.
An Interview with Logan
One of the most athletic and resiliently hardworking professionals we’ve ever met, Logan leads an intense life of structural engineering by day and personal training by night. It’s hard to think of someone who has higher stores of energy than Logan, and his goals and achievements are staggering to behold. Yet for all of his natural talents and energy, Logan has confessed the importance of hair restoration to his overall confidence and success.
Without the work of Dr. Amir Yazdan and Modena Hair Institute, Logan says, “I’d never have the confidence to stand up and do those presentations and solicit the sponsors I need to achieve the career progress I seek.” When Logan began to research hair restoration surgery at the age of 32, he already had a deeply receding hairline. Very unfortunately, Logan’s first foray into the world of hair transplant surgery got him caught in a seductive web of glittering and unreal promises from unspecialized and untrained clinics overseas. His first FUT procedure left him with a large unflattering scar on the back of his head, as well as a pluggy look on his frontal hairline. As we’ve cautioned many times before, when potential patients are researching about hair transplantation, they should not be concerned with price. An exceptional hair transplant which leaves the patient transformed and renewed with authentic confidence is truly priceless. Moreover, most top tier hair transplant clinics today – including Modena Hair Institute – offer extremely afford payment plans.
Unhappy with the scar and his final look, Logan consulted a cosmetic surgeon, who recommended he see Dr. Yazdan at Modena Hair Institute. From the start, Logan says, “I was very comfortable” with the center and Dr. Yazdan. “I didn’t even try to look for a second opinion, I was confident with Dr. Yazdan’s methods and expertise from the first meeting.” Modena Hair Institute not only offered Logan the medical expertise he sought, but also the friendly instruction and personal guidance often lacking in health care. “We all have the right to expect empathetic and welcoming care, but we don’t always get that. But at Modena Hair Institute, the entire process and staff was congenial from the start. Everybody uniformly has been so awesome to me.” Logan credits Modena Hair Institute and Dr. Yazdan with restoring the youthful hairline and natural luster of his appearance. “I’ve had to deconstruct a lot of barriers during this process,” he says. “Overcoming social stigma and pressures from others can be grueling. Hair restoration might seem small in comparison to elite personal training, but it means everything to me in terms of my confidence. And I wouldn’t go anywhere else for hair transplantation.”

What scars will be present in the donor-hair area? One long and thin scar that is cosmetically sutured and usually not visible over time. Thousands of extremely fine, round scars that close after a brief period of time. Barely visible, if at all.
How long does it take for the donor-hair area to heal? How? The suture is removed after a week or so. It heals on its own after a few days. Small raised red bumps will disappear on their own after 1 – 2 weeks.

Why FUT Procedures are Still Valid in the Era of FUE

Over the past few years, the hype behind FUE procedures has been nothing short of overwhelming. If you aren’t too caught up on the development of hair transplant technology, this procedure eliminates a key issue people have had with the traditional method: the scar. Yet an FUT hair transplant remains a powerful option for certain candidates

To give some context, this method, known as the FUT procedure, involves taking a strip of the scalp from the back of the head, dissecting the follicles from it, and placing those in the problem areas on the patient’s head, creating more hair density and fullness to help them look younger and gain back their confidence.

This, of course, can end up leaving a small scar in the back of the scalp, although novice performers of the procedure can end up leaving larger & uneven scars due to a general lack of training & inexperience with the procedure.

Even when it’s minimal, those who wear their hair short will end up with a slight visible mark along their head, and we can understand why they would want to avoid that fate. For them, the FUE procedure, which we offer at Modena’s Southern California & Nevada locations, is a game-changer.

Breaking it down to basics, the doctor performing this will use a small circular blade called a punch to create individual incisions around each hair follicle, extracting the follicles from the donor area by hand. From there, the doctor creates the recipient sites on the patient’s scalp where those will eventually be transplanted.

What’s essential in all this, however, is that a doctor performs the procedure, not their technicians. Furthermore, the doctor needs to be capable of performing the surgery with many different instruments and devices, as not one device is compatible with every patient.

The other determinant of their success is the quality and size of the instruments the surgeon uses during the procedure. FUE can be done with different size punches ranging from 0.7mm all the way to 1.5mm. When a small diameter punch is used, such as Dr. Yazdan’s 0.7 millimeter punch, they can precisely harvest follicles from the donor area with minimal trauma to the surrounding follicles. Furthermore, harvesting small grafts allows them to be placed closer in the hairline to create a more dense & natural-looking procedure, while allowing the patient to heal much quicker.

When a large punch is used, it creates too wide of a hole, increasing healing time in the donor zone, while the end result is a larger graft that requires a larger recipient site to be created. This can lead to unnatural results & a delayed healing process.

Regardless of the procedure you want done, Modena Hair Institute has offices in Beverly Hills, Newport Beach, and Las Vegas which specialize in both FUE and FUT procedures. Dr. Yazdan performs these transplants himself at all three practices, using the smallest punches and the most advanced technologies available. His surgical team and staff has been the same for past 7 years, and their teamwork has resulted in real results for countless patients.

It seems, then, that getting an FUE procedure done by a professional is the only way to get this procedure done! Why bother with the strip method at all?

Well, we wouldn’t be so hesitant to knock down the traditional way of doing things. For starters, the FUE method doesn’t necessarily work for everyone.

If you need more than 2,000 grafts, or even 3,000-4,000, your other option would be to opt for the strip procedure. With the FUT transplant procedure, the doctor is generally able to obtain a larger number of grafts, reducing the need for the patient to undergo a 2nd surgery.

For patients undergoing the FUT procedure, especially those who need a larger number of grafts, we recommend you wear your hair a little longer in the donor zone, that way the small scar would never be seen. Besides that, we imagine you’d prefer to have one surgery that offers the maximum results. We also generally recommend the FUT method for women seeking hair restoration, as the FUE method requires the back of the scalp to be shaved.

If you visit Modena Hair Institute, Dr. Yazdan will bring his years of experience as a physician & hair restoration surgeon to the table, and you can be confident that only the most precise hands & tools will be put to work on your hair.

The Importance of Medical Management of Hair Loss

hair loss prevention
Hair loss prevention is just as important as hair restoration surgery. When prospective patients come to Modena Hair Institute in Orange County, Beverly Hills or Las Vegas, they are primarily concerned with recovering or restoring their lost hair. Usually they’ve began to notice excessive shedding in the shower or thinning on the crown or frontal region when brushing their hair in the mirror. This triggers an anxious autodidactic (self-teaching) journey into the symptoms, causes and remedies of hair loss.
On that note, we always say that any research is good research. Patient review sites like Realself are invaluable guides to accurate vetting of surgeons and their clinics. We also recommend looking through the International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons (IAHRS) database for a qualified hair restoration surgeon close to you.
Modena Hair Institute’s own Dr. Amir Yazdan holds strong affiliations with both of the aforementioned institutions.
View his IAHRS profile

Now back to our story. After an initial internet study of pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia) and other related hair loss conditions, prospective patients contact us with the singular desire of total restoration. They want to get back the thickness and volume of their 20s and 30s. We want to preach against this reactionary tendency.
While various forms of hair transplant surgery like Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) can recreate and reestablish a beautiful hairline, this only tackles half the problem. Even though a hair transplant will place healthy, growing follicles into an area that has been affected by genetic pattern hair loss, it will not prevent the condition from advancing further.
Many fail to consider the equally important program of prevention and hair loss mitigation.

Unlike other common medical issues, hair loss is not a static ailment that can be treated and cured in one fell swoop. It is a progressive and life-long phenomenon that requires diligent oversight and consistent monitoring. Without some form of medical management to prevent further hair loss from occurring around the transplanted region, older hair follicles susceptible to shrinkage and thinning from a chemical called dihydrotestosterone (or DHT) can destroy all the restorative work so far done.
For this reason, all of our patients at Modena Hair Institute are provided a tailored hair loss prevention plan. One which takes into account their medical history, age, skin type, hair type and other essential variables.
Depending on the patient’s medical history, Dr. Yazdan may advise certain concentrations of minoxidil (Rogaine) and/or finasteride in conjunction with GroMD shampoo and Follicle Activator Spray. Such a combination has shown impressive results in hair regrowth and density in many of our patients.
We also employ non-surgical hair restoration techniques. Dr. Yazdan may recommend platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP) mixed with stem cells to stimulate growth and promote healing. Other options we may recommend include laser light therapy, microneedling and scalp micropigmentation.
At our hair restoration clinics in Orange County, Beverly Hills and Las Vegas, we prioritize long term hair restoration results over quick fix procedures. We develop life-long relationships with our patients, many of whom return for advice and friendly consultation once a year, because we care about real life-changing results.

Hair Transplants in 2019

hair transplant 2019
In just the last decade or so, advancements in medical technology and medical management have reached incredible levels. Better prophylactic treatments responding to cancer, diabetes and endometriosis have been accomplished in 2018, for example.
More and more individuals today are also turning to medical aid to maintain their youthful features. Dental implants, vampire facials, botox and hair transplants are growing in effectiveness, safety and popularity. Many of these procedures require little downtime, lack of general anesthesia and offer immense facial aesthetic benefits.
A major study in Reuters explains: “One of the shining examples of [modern medical advancement] is the global market for hair transplant. According to the research report by MRFR (Market Research Future), this market will develop at Godspeed during the forecast period of 2017-2023”.
Barring exceptional cases of the hair transplant black market, the steadily increasing success rate of hair transplants (both FUE and FUT) has contributed to a growing demand for hair restoration services. Clients can effortlessly and confidently obtain sexy beard transplants, thick eyebrow transplants, full hair transplants and more. Embracing medical aids to enhance facial aesthetics is no longer a stigma-bearing activity, rather it is the way of the future. Enhancing facial and body aesthetics is not just an exclusive activity for celebrities anymore, but an integral part of modern self-help.
“According to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), there were over 133,000 people who had hair restoration in the U.S. in 2016, and that was a 18% increase over the prior year,” writes the Medical Daily.
Some of the advancements taking place in the art of hair transplantation include:
Methodological Advancement: The ultimate end and aim of hair transplant work is to produce a natural looking hairline. Dr. Yazdan at Modena Hair Institute, for example, has developed and refined an advanced micro-punch device which harvests with minimal scarring and graft wastage. Advanced micro incisions also produce cleaner and faster graft extractions which result in more affordable and effective procedures.
Increased Hair Density: On top of a natural-looking hairline shape and growth pattern due to expert angle and direction determination, modern hair restoration specialists use powerful new tools to accurately understand hair shaft diameter, curl and texture.
Time and Healing: Decreased post-operative pain and a lack of visible scarring has allowed some patients to return to daily activities 1 to 2 days after the procedure.
At Modena Hair Institute our stringent process and careful handling ensures higher graft survival rate and thicker hair density. When grafts are planted between existing hairs, our hair specialists can clearly see the natural angle of hair growth and can perfectly position each graft to match the existing ones. This eliminates the risk of planning grafts too close to existing hair, giving patients a more natural look that lasts.
As the 2018 year comes to a close, we find ourselves very excited for the future of hair transplantation in 2019.

Drug-Induced: Is Your Medications Causing You Hair Loss?

Medications are designed to treat a wide range of health conditions, but sometimes they can have unwarranted side effects including changes in our hair. Changes in hair color, texture and you guessed it…even hair loss! Medication-induced hair loss, just like any other form of hair loss, can have a profound influence on men and women’s self-esteem. The good news is – once the medication is stopped, your hair loss most likely can be reversed. Now for the unwelcome news – many of us must take these medications to treat a more fundamental problem (i.e. thyroid problem) creating a vicious cycle of problems and frustration.
So, what do you do? While we don’t recommend you tossing your meds in the trash to save your hair, At Modena Hair Restoration, we would first suggest seeing your doctor who prescribed the medication and ask if there is an alternative without the pesky and unruly side effect of hair loss. If not, you’ll have to find treatments to supplement this bothersome side effect.
Drugs can induce a wide spectrum of hair loss ranging from barely detectable hair loss to irreversible baldness. This is caused by interrupting the normal cycle of hair growth. It’s important to understand the 3 diverse cycles:

  1. Anagen phase – 90% of your hair is in this phase for 2-5 years, the hair grows. This is considered the “active growth” phase.
  2. Catagen phase – which lasts 2-3 weeks, the hair is preparing itself for the final phase of Telogen. This is also known as the “transitional” phase.
  3. Telogen phase – which last about 3 months, the hair rests, older hairs are shed and then replaced by new hairs. This is also known as the “resting” phase.

Medications can lead to two specific types of hair loss:
Telogen Effluvium – being the most common type of medication-induced hair loss, usually appears a few months after starting the medication. This causes the hair follicles to go into their state of rest (Telogen) and fall out prematurely.
Anagen Effluvium – this type of hair loss occurs in the Anagen phase of our hair growth cycle when the hairs are actively growing. It prevents the matrix cells (which assist in producing new hairs) from dividing in a normal fashion. This is a more severe form of hair loss that is mostly seen in patients taking chemotherapy drugs causing them to lose most-if not all the hairs on their head and can even affect the eyebrows, eyelashes and body hair.
Culpable Medications known to cause hair loss:

  • Acne medication (retinol in acne medications)
  • Antibiotics and antifungal medications
  • Antidepressants
  • Oral Contraceptives
  • Anticoagulants or “blood thinners”
  • Immunosuppressant medications

Possible Treatments (dependent on the type of hair loss):

At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan prevents and treats hair loss caused by medications with a custom medical management regimen to fit patients specific needs. By visiting with a reputable specialist alike Dr. Yazdan early, you can make a plan of attack for prevention and treatment. While hair loss may still occur, your preemptive approach can considerably lessen the overall impact.

Hair Loss: Importance of Seeing a Hair Restoration Physician

When you first begin to notice hair loss, it can be tempting to rush to your Primary Care Physician right away to consult them. From there, you might find that you are referred to a dermatologist or even an endocrinologist – but this isn’t always the right course of action for you, or your hair.
There are so many subdivisions in hair restoration surgery that it is incredibly important to see a doctor who specializes in the field, not one who carries out several types of cosmetic procedures with “hair restoration” being one of them.
If it makes you feel more comfortable and at ease, by all means – start with your Primary Care doctor. However, I urge you not to stop here and to seek the help of a hair loss specialist.
Why NOT to go to a Dermatologist:
Dermatologists are often the first “port of call” if you will and come after your PCP – this is generally where a PCP will refer us.
While it can be enticing to think that you are in excellent hands with a dermatologist, this can frequently be misleading. Dermatologists are experts in their field, habitually, but this is often times not hair. For this reason, not all Dermatologist are ‘up-to-date’ with the latest advances in the diagnosis and treatment of your hair loss. There are endless amounts of hair loss vitamins and pills promising to regrow your hair and make it thicker – but a hair loss specialist will be able to give you the best advice that is tailored to you and your specific needs.
There are many distinct causes of hair loss, so making sure that you are getting the correct treatment for your type of hair loss is paramount.
Why NOT to go to an Endocrinologist:
Endocrinologists are often another customary referral we get from our General Practitioner. Endocrinologists specialize in working with your endocrine structure – the system culpable for hormones and illnesses that result from hormonal imbalances we tend to get from time to time.
While hormonal imbalances are known to cause hair loss – making it probable to see this type of specialist, there are also countless diversified types of hair loss that are not caused by a hormonal imbalance. Therefore, it is critical to see a hair loss specialist – to ensure that you are getting a correct and current report.
Why See a Hair Loss Specialist:
The first step in treating any medical problem is assessment and diagnosis. After all, only with a proper diagnosis in place can an adequate treatment method be recommended.
Using your medical history provided, as well as the physical assessment performed at a clinic, a leading hair loss specialist alike Dr. Yazdan can exhibit a better understanding of your hair loss and thinning. At Modena Hair Institute, Dr. Yazdan can offer you insight into the cause of your hair loss, as well as the likely outcomes should treatment be delayed.
Sometimes, hair loss can be a sign of a larger health issue or an underlying condition. In these cases, Dr. Yazdan will be able to 1) recognize this and 2) refer you to the right medical professional for further testing.
A few things Dr. Yazdan would be looking for include:

  • Dryness and/or scaling
  • Scarring
  • Noticeable patterns of loss
  • Hair follicle irritation/inflammation
  • Low-quality hair texture
  • Signs of infections (fungal or bacterial)
  • Signs of dandruff/seborrheic dermatitis
  • Excess sebum production

How to Prepare for Your Appointment
To get the most from your appointment, I recommend you plan ahead. Here are a few tips to get you started on your preparations:

  • Avoid styling your hair prior to your appointment
  • Avoid the use of hair products such as conditioners, gels, hair sprays, serums etc.
  • Jot down any questions or concerns and bring them with you
  • Bring any relevant health paperwork such as lab results

Not only will some of these preparations make the process transparent, but they can also lend themselves to improved assessment and diagnosis. While hair loss can be a devastating experience, the right professionals can help. Through a thorough evaluation and diagnosis, you can then move forward with the appropriate treatment and regain your hair and your life back!

Just as with anything in life, experience is imperative. It is important to seek a professional who specializes in hair restoration exclusively, as well as to meet personally with your physician of choice and have an in-person evaluation suited for your specific needs.
By visiting with a specialist early, you can make a plan of attack for prevention and treatment. While hair loss may still occur, your preemptive approach can considerably lessen the overall impact.

3 Ways to Deal with a Hair Transplant at Work

Undergoing a hair transplant procedure can be nerve-racking and even daunting for some patients. While most men and women who undergo a hair restoration surgery with a world-renowned hair transplant surgeon alike Dr. Yazdan are very happy once their results grow in, dealing with the first few months can make patients anxious, especially if you work in an office environment. So how does one manage and maintain privacy at work during the first several months post-surgery?  In this article, we will discuss 3 solutions for maintaining or resolving any concerns over public attention.
Option 1 – Partial shave or full buzz cut:
In many cases, Dr. Yazdan’s hair transplant patients can conceal any signs of a hair transplant surgery simply by partially shaving the recipient area and keeping the rest of the hair untouched.  When styling your hair a certain way, most (if not all) signs of surgery can be effectively camouflaged. Two fitting examples of a style that could be used would be a “side sweep” or “side part”. Not every hair restoration patient is able to grow their hair out and, in this case, some patients choose to completely shave their head and let all their hair grow out in unison.
Option 2 – Topical hair loss concealer:
Depending on how long the patient has before they return to work, there are a few different types of hair loss concealers on the market today that we recommend trying out while waiting ever-so-patiently for your new locks to grow out. One solution we recommend at Modena Hair Institute is hair fibers. Hair fibers are magnetically charged and attach to miniaturized hairs and the fibers bind to each follicle, creating the appearance of added fullness. The other type of hair loss concealer we recommend is a hard-packed powder formula – also known as “hair-shadow”. Hair-shadow matches the color of an individual’s hair to their scalp and minimizes the contrast between scalp and hair. This provides an ‘illusion’ of denser looking hair. If you went with an all over buzz cut, hair shadow will be your best friend while going through the transformation. If you decide to keep your hair at a longer length, sprinkling hair fibers on the scalp is a great solution in concealing your hair transplant. Both hair fibers and hair-shadow are easy to use and washes out in the shower.
Option 3 – Be Honest:
This option may be the least favored but certainly the least troublesome. Being honest and upfront with co-workers and friends highlights a real concern that men and women around the world go through each day; and that is hair loss! Most people have their own issues and insecurities that cause them to be self-conscious. In general, a hair transplant patient may get a few questions regarding their experience.  After a period, people will move on and likely forget it all together. Being honest can be very liberating and with so many men and even women suffering with hair loss each day, taking an honest approach about your hair transplant may be enough to inspire a change in someone else’s life!
At Modena Hair Institute, we understand that surgical procedures may not be for everyone, and it is paramount to feel confident and comfortable with not only the process, but the surgeon of your choice. Do bountiful research prior to jumping the gun and making any decisions. Here at Modena, Dr. Yazdan personally performs each hair transplant in Beverly Hills, Orange County and Las Vegas surgical clinics at his surgical center, utilizing a dedicated team throughout the entire process. He is involved in every aspect of the procedure in order to ensure the best possible hair restoration results and is committed to performing only one surgery per day in order to provide patients with the undivided attention they deserve.

Can a Hair Transplant Surgery Make Your Forehead Appear Smaller?

It is perfectly normal for us to prefer certain facial features over others. If you find yourself self-conscious about having a large forehead then first of all, don’t worry – you’re not alone! Whether you were born that way or over the years you’ve begun to see one of the tell-tale signs of aging – a receding forehead where the hairline slowly retreats further back onto the scalp – many of us have been there.
If you struggle to love the way your forehead makes you look, there are plenty of beauty tips and tricks both men and women can try. For example, contouring the hairline is a great and simple tip to help create the ‘illusion’ of a smaller forehead – you can use hair shadows, colored dry shampoos etc. to pull this off like a pro. However, some people are looking for a more permanent solution to their hair loss or receding hairline so for the sole purpose of this article we will elaborate on how a hair transplant procedure can dramatically lower the hairline turning your 5-head back into a 4-head!
A much more permanent solution for reducing the appearance of a large forehead is a hair transplant. This is done either using Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method or Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). Both procedures take place under local anesthesia and the method used would be determined by Dr. Yazdan’s recommendations and what he decides is appropriate for the patient’s specific needs. If your desired outcome is to bring the hairline forward, then the hair follicles would be harvested from a recipient area also known as the donor site (i.e. back of the scalp) and are then transplanted to the front of your hairline, thus, commanding your hairline forward and reducing the size of your forehead. So, in simple to answer the question posed in this article topic – YES, a hair transplant can and will reduce the appearance of a large forehead.

Lowering the hairline or a forehead reduction procedure via a hair transplant can be quite tricky and takes an exceptionally skilled surgeon who takes the necessary time it requires in order for the patient to get NATURAL looking results. For example, this type of procedure requires ultra-refined microscopic surgery with dense packing of grafts using some of the smallest punch tools – Dr. Yazdan is known for using some of the smallest size punch tools to yield hair transplant results that go non-detected by the naked eye. The needle size, incisions, the direction in which the sites are made on the forehead as well as the artistry your surgeon uses to draw out the shape and form of the hairline all come together and are equally as important as the next for an unrecognizable new and improved hairline!

If you’d like to find out hair restoration options, we offer both surgical and non-surgical hair loss solutions at our clinics.
