Waller’s Second Hair Transplant (Case Study)

hair transplant colorado

Native Colorado resident Waller shows off the results of his hair transplant procedure at Modena Hair Institute and says: “I feel 10 years younger.”  Waller is owner of a large welding company in the Southwest had 2,100 hair grafts transplanted into his balding crown.

It was Waller’s (40 yrs old) second hair transplant in the last five years after he started losing his hair when he was just 18. Waller said: “I am so pleased with the results and I do feel 10 years younger. I had significant baldness around my crown and this new procedure has filled in all those gaps.”

“My first procedure was around the front of my scalp and hairline. I started losing my hair at a very early age and would be as bald as my dad now, if I had not received this help.”

“As a professional investor and welder, I am acutely aware of the importance of having great hair and looking good and I’m so pleased that the expertise is there to make a real difference to the lives of men who are losing their hair. It can be heart-breaking and shatter your self-esteem.”

Waller had his most recent procedure at Modena Hair Institute in Las Vegas with our double board certified doctor Dr. Amir Yazdan. He had the same follicular unit extraction (FUE) method used by previous celebrities where grafts are removed individually from the back of the scalp and transplanted into the balding area.

Waller had his first hair transplant procedure five years ago – 2,500 grafts in the front of his scalp.

After finding success and fame, he decided to have a second procedure just prior to his 40th birthday – this time focusing further back, around his crown and mid-scalp area.

He explains: “It was fun wearing toupees for a time because they looked amazing but they are not a long-term solution. You damage your hair glueing them on and they can have embarrassing consequences and come off at the wrong times! I can remember one man almost getting the surprise of his life when it almost came off in his hand. I realized the only long-term solution to my problem was a hair transplant. I was really pleased with my first procedure, and decided soon after that I wanted a second procedure.

I chose Dr. Amir Yazdan because he had done such an amazing job with other colleagues of mine who left with gorgeously restored hairlines.

The truth is that I’ve had a hair transplant and I’m very happy to make that clear. I have posed up now for pictures because all the lovely new hair has grown back.

Dr. Amir Yazdan treats lots of celebrities at Modena Hair Institute – many of whom prefer not to go public. Dr. Yazdan said: “Hair transplants have never been more popular – particularly amongst celebrities who need to look good to stay in the public eye. You can completely change your appearance for the same cost as upgrading your car. Waller was a joy to work with and has had a great result around his crown. He still has a good covering of donor hair and could possibly benefit from a further procedure down the line if likes.”

Jamaal’s Celebrity Hair Transplant (Case Study)

hair transplant thinning

An architectural designer who frequented celebrity parties with stars such as Bill Maher and Lady Gaga has told us how he overcame crippling low self-esteem with a hair transplant at Modena Hair Institute with our double board certified Dr. Amir Yazdan.

Jamaal spent his working life mixing with top designers and musicians who graced the pages of the Los Angeles Times. But behind the party smiles he was a hiding a secret agony over his thinning hair which he disguised with a hat in many of his most public photos.

The bald patch around his crown grew so much he was jokingly called ‘Big Red’ by friends at work where he was under pressure to stay looking young. Jamaal, 44, turned his life around with the a hair transplant procedure from a doctor he trusted with heart. Jamaal knew two friends who Dr. Yazdan helped with personalized hair restoration options.

Jamaal had about 2,000 hairs transplanted into the temples at the side of his scalp, his hairline and right across his bald crown. With the transplanted hair now fully grown back, he now has a full head of hair again and says: “It’s been an absolute life changer. I look eight years younger.”

Jamaal explained: “I turned 40 and I had recently went through a divorce. I was in a job that put me in alot of exclusive social situations, where I was mixing with stars and business magnates and there was a pressure on me to look good, but I was losing my hair fast and having to wear a hat all the time to cover up my baldness.

“I guess you could say I was having a mid-life crisis. I didn’t realize at the time just how much my baldness was contributing to my lack of self-confidence but I knew it was a factor. I was partying with all these A-list stars while worrying about my thinning hair.”

I knew I needed to do something drastic to kick-start my life and I had hair transplanted to all my bald spots by Dr. Yazdan. “It has been amazing watching the new hair grow back over the last year and now I finally have a full head of hair again.”

“I can go out and meet my favorite friends and coworkers without wearing a hat,” he joked. “In fact, I do need to wear a hat when I’m walking my dog because my hair is so big and it helps to keep it all in one place!”

Jamaal had a follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure with Dr. Yazdan at Modena Hair Institute in Beverly Hills.

Hair grafts are taken from the back and side of the scalp and replanted in the balding areas by a highly skilled and experienced specialist like Dr. Yazdan. The advantage of this method is the scarring is minimal with patients having some red pin pricks from where the hair is extracted and replanted which go away after a few days. Jamaal said: “I was worried about the pain but the operation was fine. I was joking with staff while watching TV on the monitors at the clinic!”

“The new hair grew back gradually over the year and by the end of it I had the full head of hair I hadn’t had since I was a teenager. “I didn’t realize just how much I was lacking in confidence till I had hair again and I felt so much better.”

Jamaal, from Boston, Massachusetts, had first started losing his hair in his early 20s – first from his hairline and then his crown – just as he embarking on a career in architecture.

He was a big success at work and eight years ago landed his dream job as editor of one of Los Angeles’ largest firms.

“The only solution for my aging look and wispy hair was having a transplant and I am so glad that I did. The techniques have improved so much and the transplanted hair blends naturally with your existing hair. The new transplanted hair will last for the rest of my life.”

Our own Dr. Yazdan has seen a 25% rise in patients at Modena Hair Institute – in part due to the lack of stigma associated with hair loss. Increasing numbers of young men following their favorite stars who have had hair transplants in the past.

Dr. Yazdan said: “Jamaal has got a great result and it is especially satisfying to hear how his new hair has boosted his self-confidence. It’s no exaggeration to say that a hair transplant can completely transform your life. We see it everyday.”

Claire’s New Eyebrows (Case Study)

eyebrow hair transplant
Before and after patient photo of an Eyebrow Hair Transplant

Claire’s Testimony: I contacted Modena Hair Institute because I was so distressed about the way I looked. I had plucked my eyebrows from an early age and unfortunately, they hadn’t grown back. I had blonde eyelashes and barely any eyebrows. I had no confidence or self esteem and always felt ugly compared to everyone else. I felt I didn’t have a face, just lots of skin. I was also allergic to make up which made the situation even worse.

I made myself get up and make an initial consultation with Modena. Although I was struggling with my image, I was obsessively dreaming about how I would look with new and natural looking eyebrows. Would they be too dark and masculine looking? How painful was the procedure? What if it didn’t work for me and I looked even worse after the surgery?

That is when my husband and I sat with Dr. Amir Yazdan and discussed the procedure, why I wanted it and how many grafts he thought I would need. As well as the design and expected aesthetic result. I was thrilled and excited.

The aim of the procedure was to produce natural-looking eyebrows by removing hair from the back of my head and then grafting it into an eyebrow shape above my eyes. This is known as follicular unit extraction (FUE), which is now the gold standard of hair transplantation.

The procedure itself was fast, about three hours, and was not bothered in the least. I also did not experience any complications afterwards.

Dr. Yazdan escorted me back to my room after surgery and ensured I was comfortable and explained what to expect over the next few weeks. I was given a spray that I had to spray on my eyebrows on a daily basis. He also gave me a care package and recommended dietary and sleep habits that would help calm and relax me.

Overall, I feel like I earned a new face. It’s been that important to me!

Giuseppe’s Crown Density (Case Study)

hair transplant modena hair institute

Giuseppe, 32, Las Vegas resident and assistant manager at a hotel on the strip, came to Modena Hair Institute for his second hair transplant.

Like our previous patients, Giuseppe, needed further work to stem his hair loss.

Our pictures show how we transformed Giuseppe’s Crown with 1,611 grafts (3,237 individual hairs) moved from the back of his scalp to the front.

He is pictured before and after the procedure, carried out by our board certified hair restoration surgeon Dr. Amir Yazdan.

Men like Elon Musk inspired Giuseppe to have a second operation.  He said: “It is fact of life that hair loss is a continuous process. While the hair transplanted in my previous operation is permanent, I am continuing to lose my natural hair. I had the second procedure because I was so pleased with the first one and how it helped to boost my confidence and work opportunities. Once again, I have a much fuller hairline and the whole front of my scalp looks so much better.”

“The operation gives me a lot more flexibility with my hair. I can continue to wear it spiked up.”

Giuseppe, who has been losing his hair since he was 23, said there was no longer a stigma attached to men seeking hair transplants.

He said: “Stars like Elon Musk and Matthew McConaughey have made a big difference. Drugs like Propecia can halt future hair loss but they won’t help to grow new hair. The only way to keep my hair as I want it is through having hair transplants.”

Read more celebrity hair transplant case studies here.

He shared that losing his hair had hit his confidence. “You worry when you go on dates, women are looking at your receding hairline. It’s a distraction you don’t need and, thankfully, one that can be remedied by a transplant”.

Giuseppe had his second transplant in October 2022, just over a year after his first procedure. It will take between six months and a year for the new hair to fully grow back.

Dr. Yazdan said Giuseppe had the same Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant technique as McConaughey and David Beckham, where individual follicles are taken from the back or the side of the scalp and replanted at the front.

Dr. Yazdan said: “What we’ve noticed in the last five years is that the age of our patients is coming down all the time. The fact is a third of men suffer hair loss by the time they are 30.”

More of them are deciding to have transplants immediately rather than waiting until middle age.

Why suffer 20 years with a loss of confidence if you can fix the problem now? For people who have an active social or romantic life, their image is vital.

“A simple procedure such as a hair transplant can make an enormous difference to a man’s life.”

Elon Musk’s Incredible Hair Transplant

elon musk hair transplantHuman hair has incredible aesthetic power. And as one of the most powerful innovators on the planet, Elon Musk wanted his image to be equally as strong and powerful.

Musk is one of many world renowned celebrities who have undergone hair restoration work. In our last post we covered Joe Rogan’s problematic hair transplant experience.

For Rogan, he was neither adequately consulted nor appropriately diagnosed. The hair restoration strategies put in place for him must have been highly disreputable and not coming from a decorated and experience clinic.

Musk’s hair restoration experience, on the other hand, is the opposite of Joe Rogan’s. It’s very clear that he almost certainly underwent multiple procedures and followed a highly tailored and personal medical therapy plan.

It is likely Musk started with FDA approved therapies such as Rogaine and Finasteride – as early as the 1990s – before doing his first FUT procedure. In the pictures below you can see his hair growth timeline was steady but slow.

elon musk hair lossAlthough his hair would continue to thin, his dense hair transplants (likely 4,000+ grafts in total) combined with strategic hair therapies led to one of the most handsome hair transformations for a celebrity in history!

Now at 51 years old, Musk looks incredibly youthful.

Was Musk a good candidate for hair transplantation?

A good candidate for a hair transplant is someone with a sufficient supply of donor hair. It must be enough to cover the balding areas as well as any other areas that might lose hair in the future. Individuals past the age of thirty, with non-aggressive hair loss, are generally good candidates for hair transplants.

By this age, their hair loss patterns are well-established compared to younger patients. Due to his age and hair loss patterns, Elon was nearing the ideal candidacy he so much desired.

looking at pictures of Musk from the past 20 years, it’s quite apparent that his hair has become far thicker and denser since he earned his fortune. Musk’s hair was noticeably thinning when he launched PayPal back in 1999, since then, though, he has miraculously recovered a full, thick head of hair.

Musk’s hair loss was a textbook case of male pattern hair loss (receding hairline and a balding area on the top of his head). This is a genetic condition that does not reverse course on its own. The only permanent solution to this type of hair loss is hair transplant surgery.

Joe Rogan Hair Transplant. What Went Wrong?

Perhaps the most famous podcast host in America (and the world), Joe Rogan is a UFC commentator, comedian and talk show personality.

You may have heard or seen him talk about his past experiences with hair transplantation, and how they famously did little to help him with his hair loss.

joe rogan hair transplant

At first blush, one might simply assume that for some people hair transplants work, while for others they don’t. That it’s simply up to nature and to fate.

Wrong! In fact, hair transplants always ‘work’, regardless of the patient – they are surgically implanted hairs, so will almost never fall out.

  • Over 90% of transplanted follicles survive in hair transplants if done properly
  • Personal satisfaction nearly doubles in men who have recently had a hair transplant
  • Hair Transplants are permanent unlike other hair stimulation therapies/treatments

But the question is not whether new hairs can be successfully planted into your thinning hairline, but whether those hairs will recreate a youthful and aesthetically pleasing hairline.

This is where the art and science of hair transplantation begins. It’s not a simple matter of plug and play.

joe rogan hair loss

The operating doctor must study your hair loss patterns, age, genetic history, vitamin cycles and more to determine what the best hair restoration strategy for you will be.

In the video below, Joe directly speaks on his poor experience with hair restoration techniques (keep in mind this is more than 20 years ago) for the very correct reason that the it did not anticipate his increasing hair loss in the future.

Joe Rogan had his first hair transplant in his late 20s, and would be moving rapidly along the Norwood scale over the 10 to 20 years. The hair transplant doctor he used should have explained to him in no uncertain terms that 1) Given his thin, wispy hair and 2) Advancement on the Norwood scale, a different course of treatment would have suited him much better.

But that is not how so many hair restoration consultations are conducted, to the great detriment of many patients.

Many transplant doctors will knowingly fast track a patient into the operating room on the hope and promise of a new hairline, without cautioning them about future hair loss.

My Hair Transplant Results After 1 Year

It’s now been 12 months since I had my hair transplant at Modena Hair Institute and Dr. Yazdan and his team kindly asked me if I could detail my thoughts and feelings about the entire process. I happily said yes. If I help just one person feel understood and comfortable with going in for hair restoration I will have succeeded.

First let’s go over cost.

The number of grafts I had done was around 1,500. The price I paid was close to $8,000. This is alot of money, but if you know anything about hair transplantation, you get what you pay for. I had done plenty of research (believe me, it was a headache) before I chose to go with Dr. Yazdan. My hairline had been thinning and receding for years, and it was going quickly, I knew if I wanted to keep my hair and not go bald, I had to get a procedure that was no-nonsense and highly specialized.

Second, let’s look at the results!

  • Many people ask me, “Ray, are you happy with it? Are you happy with the results after a year?” My answer immediately is, “Yes! Just look at it.” I tell them. Compared to what my hair was like before, the 1,500 or so grafts that Dr. Yazdan spread across the crown and hairline practically revived my masculine look. Compared to what my hairline was like before (see ‘before’ picture below) it wasn’t looking good – it was almost impossible to style and my widows peak was so deep that I couldn’t hide it behind any comb style I could try.

  • As for the new hair transplant, the only downside I would site is it took close to 8 months for my hairline to look like it’s most natural and grown-in self. The results are not instant, but this is hardly a downside considering the results are permanent and gorgeous. You do have to be patient – the truly beautiful results won’t show themselves for 6-9 months afterwards (results may vary).
  • Let’s talk follicles. Going in I had no idea about the importance of what’s called ‘follicular units’. A follicular unit can contain up to five strands of hair. At the lowest count, however, one follicular unit can contain one strand of hair.

follicular units

Part of the job of Dr. Yazdan during the surgery was so survey which units or grafts had the best and most numerous strands, and how they would best suit my new hairline. I had the impression that FUE hair transplantation was simply taking one unit from the back and placing it in the front. Dr. Yazdan would take the richest follicular units and place them aesthetically and strategically to form the new crown. This is another instance where you get what you pay for. Clinics usually charge per graft, and therefore come to the same rate, but the outcome depends entirely on the strategy, eye and expertise of the surgeon.

  • During my post-surgery consultation, when I asked Dr. Yazdan about the potential for more hair transplants in the future, he assured me that I was safely prepared to have more if I wanted to, because there were plenty of good grafts remaining at my donor site for future harvesting.

Let’s talk about styling

  • Choosing a hairstyle that adds more volume to your hair is always best if you are thinning or bald in any area of your scalp. A common hair style after a hair transplant is combing the hair forward (if you have a large widows peak) or backwards (if the crown is thinning).
  • The longer your hair grows, the more coverage you will have. When hair is combed backward, it can be helpful in covering the thin areas behind the transplanted hairline. Using gel or wax to hold your hair in place is a good choice. Also, finding a hairstyle that involves blow drying your hair is a great way to make it seem like you have more hair than you do.
  • A great way to add more to your hair thickness is scalp micro pigmentation. I will be returning to Modena Hair Institute next year for a full scalp micro pigmentation session to add the appearance of thickness! (It also alot cheaper than a hair transplant, and requires no recovery time, so I’m excited for the quick tune up).

Finally I want to emphasize: do your research!

  • Make absolutely sure that you’ve gone through both online and offline records for the clinic, their credentials, reviews and look at case studies done by the surgeon who would be treating you.
  • I started by talking about why the high price tag for the procedure (in my eyes) was worth it. I am so happy with the results and with the level of detail and expertise Dr. Yazdan provided. I can’t believe I will feel confident with my hair for another decade to come.

Can I Reverse Premature Gray Hair?

Studies have shown that more than half of all women and as high as 83 percent of all men will experience some form of hair loss as they get older.

There’s no doubt that thinning hair can have a negative impact on self esteem, but another aspect of aging that is less talked about is a change to our natural hair color.

As we get older, it’s normal for our hair color to shift—and even people in their teens or 20s may notice a few white hairs from time to time.

This is caused by a loss of pigment cells from the hair follicles.

The most common underlying triggers for hair graying include vitamin deficiencies, genetics, oxidative stress, real life stressors, smoking, and damage from chemical hair dyes or other hair products.

Our team at Modena Hair Institute, providing solutions for hair loss at our Newport Beach, Las Vegas and Los Angeles offices, has some tips for preserving the rest of your existing hair color and delaying premature graying.

Lowering Stress

Although the link between real life stressors and graying of the hair is still being researched, learning about ways to manage stress better may be beneficial. Meditation, deep breathing exercises, daily exercise, and setting aside time for a hobby each week are all ways to lower stress.

Intoxicants and Smoking

Along with contributing to numerous other health problems and accelerated aging of the skin, studies have also shown that smoking, excessive drinking and other substance use may cause loss of pigmentation.

Lack of Nutrients

Since graying hair is often linked to vitamin deficiencies, you can combat it by making changes to your diet. Ensure that you’re getting an adequate intake of vitamins and minerals such as calcium, copper, iron, protein (which is turned into keratin), vitamin B-5, vitamin B-6, folic acid, zinc, vitamin B-12, and vitamin D from your diet or supplements.

PRP Hair Treatment Real Patient Results

Though often associated with aging and genetics, hair loss can happen any time throughout adulthood to anyone for a variety of common reasons.

Balding occurs when hair follicles begin to shrink, allowing the hair to fall out.

In the world of sports medicine, doctors have used PRP (platelet rich plasma) to help heal muscle and tendon injuries.

With hair loss, research suggests injecting the natural platelets found in a patient’s blood and activating growth factors can improve the blood supply to their hair follicles and increase the thickness of their hair shafts.

Before every PRP procedure, Dr. Yazdan and the team at Modena Hair Institute will discuss realistic expectations with you. Improvement in hair health and thickness is highly probable and has been documented in several peer-reviewed studies and in tens of thousands of case studies.

Your hair will gradually improve, becoming thicker and fuller as months pass. PRP injections are recommended serially over three to six months.

Real Patient Before & After Photos

Botched or Corrective Hair Transplants

Hair restoration is the most powerful and permanent way of correcting hair loss in men and women.

When it comes to hair restoration surgery, the best results are achieved when a highly skilled and experienced hair restoration surgeon performs the surgery from start to finish.

Dr. Yazdan’s highly specialized and artistic FUE Method:

  • Micro incisions 0.8mm (Most clinics use 1.2mm)
  • Accurate Depth Control
  • Graft Survival Rate up to 99%
  • Recipient sites created with natural hair line design

Over the past decade, techniques for performing hair restoration have advanced greatly, making the surgery more reliable and capable of producing very natural, lasting results. There are, however, still plenty of opportunities for hair transplants to go wrong and produce undesirable results. When a patient is not happy with the results of a hair transplant, he or she may seek a corrective hair transplant to provide a more natural look.

With hair restoration becoming more and more popular, many surgeons and medical practices seek ways to capitalize on this revenue stream – even ones who may not have the experience or skills required to successfully perform hair transplants.

In other cases, hair restoration clinics may perform hair transplants using a rotating staff of surgeons and support teams, rather than using one surgical team to perform the surgery from start to finish.

Common mistakes include unskilled removal of hair follicles from the donor site, which can result in scarring or uneven patches, and unnatural or unsuitable placement of the hair grafts. In some cases, grafts are placed so badly that new hair growth does not occur.

This helps prevent errors when the hair grafts are harvested from the donor site and when they are transplanted to their new location. Another key to success is the surgeon’s artistic skill – a natural and aesthetically pleasing outcome depends upon the surgeon’s ability to reproduce the patient’s natural hairline.

Thanks to many years of experience performing hair transplants, Dr. Yazdan is able to easily identify what has gone wrong during a primary hair transplant. He then creates a plan to correct these mistakes so he can craft a more natural outcome for the patient. Once the errors have been identified and a plan created, the corrective hair transplant is performed similarly to any other hair transplant performed by Dr. Yazdan.

  • The first step involves harvesting hair grafts from the donor site. Dr. Yazdan will take special care to preserve the integrity of the scalp in the donor area and, if necessary, will work to address any scarring that occurred during the primary hair transplant. The approach used will depend upon the patient’s unique needs and the condition of the donor site.
  • Next the hair grafts are carefully prepared for transplantation.
  • Finally the hair grafts are individually placed in the recipient site, with special attention given to the angle of placement, density, pattern and hairline shape.

Dr. Yazdan and his medical team manage the entire process from start to finish, helping to ensure a more consistent, natural result.

When performed by a surgeon who specializes in corrective hair transplants, the results of the surgery will be natural, aesthetically pleasing, and a dramatic improvement from the primary hair transplant. Hair begins to grow around 3 months postoperatively. The full results of a hair transplant are usually seen within 12 to 18 months. More than one procedure may be required, the need for which will be accessed after the hair grows in.

Body Hair Transplant for Amazing Results

Fortunately for many patients with hair loss new technology and techniques have made it possible for us to use hair from other parts of the body – such as the chest, beard, arms, or legs – in hair restoration surgery.

We can leverage the advantages of a hair-by-hair reconstruction of your natural hairline to dramatically improve aesthetic appearance and cover any spots on the scalp which appear to be thinning.

If you’re experiencing hair loss you may have considered a hair transplant to restore growth to balding areas. Using FUE (the gold standard method), we can harvest hair from other body areas without leaving behind a visible, unattractive scar.

What’s the Difference between Scalp and Body Hair?

Transplantation of body hair is a type of follicular unit extraction (FUE) in which donor hairs are taken from areas of the body such as the beard, chest or back. An extraction tool is used to remove enough hairs to cover the desired area on the head, and these hairs are transplanted to reverse the visible effects of hair loss.

There are several great instances in which body hair may be harvested instead of scalp hair:

  1. Scalp donor sites are thin and worn down
  2. Body hair thickness can be richer than scalp hair
  3. Additional donor sites are sometimes required
  4. You want to conceal a scar from a previous transplant procedure
  5. Covering patchy hair loss

Your expert hair transplant doctor can tell you if you have enough of the right type of body hair for a transplant to be successful.

Body hair has different characteristics than hair on the scalp.

As with all surgery, hair transplants carry risks of pain, bleeding and scarring. Body hair transplantation also requires tremendous experience, cosmetic craftsmanship and expert abilities. It’s best to work with a doctor first to rule out medical conditions or nutritional deficiencies as the cause of hair loss. Correcting these problems can stop or reverse the advancement of bald areas without surgery.

Discuss all available options with Dr. Amir Yazdan to determine if a body hair transplant is the best choice for you!

Enjoy a More Youthful Appearance with a Hair Transplant

According to an official Reuters report:

“People shown before-and-after pictures of hair transplant recipients rated men with more locks as looking more attractive and younger, researchers found. People also thought the men looked more successful and approachable after the procedure.

The reviewers thought the men who’d had hair transplants looked about four years younger in their “after” photos. They also thought the men looked more attractive, successful and approachable after their procedures.”

With every passing year the cosmetic industry grows better and safer. (That applies to clinics which take their practices extremely seriously, not pop-up clinics looking to capitalize on market need).

The reason why hair restoration is exploding (and has been for many years) is because individuals want to feel younger and reliably improve their appearance. They want to have hair that looks luscious and skin that looks healthy.

Many of the cosmetic procedures and treatments available truly work wonders. They have helped people treat wrinkles, sunspots and acne, restore hair growth and even completely change their appearance. When talking about the cosmetic industry, we are talking about tons of different products and treatments.

Since there are so many different treatments available, many people feel overwhelmed when it comes to how they should go about getting a more youthful appearance. Something that you need to keep in mind when determining what procedure or treatment is right for you is how drastic you want the results to be.

A hair transplant is a long-term solution to the aging process. You are able to enjoy a much more youthful appearance with a procedure like this.

If you are interested in a hair transplant, you should know that most people get fantastic results. Just check out our results page!

While there are a lot of factors to consider when thinking about a hair transplant, one of the main things that you may be concerned about is the kind of results that you will get after you go through the entire process and have recovered. Let us be the first to tell you, the results are going to be great.

For most people who choose other treatments like PRP in order to treat hair loss, they have subtle and strong results. However, after something like a hair transplant, you are going to be able to take years off your appearance.

This is something that PRP and other non-invasive treatments simply cannot accomplish.

Since a hair transplant is more invasive, there are several considerations that will need to be made when considering if you are a good candidate for the procedure. All of these things will be discussed when you come in for a first consultation at Modena Hair Institute.

Menopause and Hair Loss

Of all the many side effects of menopause, hair loss and thinning is something particularly hard to deal with.

During menopause, estrogen, the hormone most responsible for promoting hair growth, decreases and while estrogen (and progesterone) levels drop, testosterone levels increase disproportionately.

menopause hair thinningThis hormonal imbalance can begin to cause your normal natural hair to thin – for the follicles to miniaturize.

Several good strategies can help here.

The truth is it’s important to keep stress managed to help preserve hormonal balance. After lowering your stressful lifestyle, look at your diet. Reduce your intake of saturated fats and increase your intake of whole grains and fruits and vegetables.

Vitamin B6 and folic acid may also help stimulate hair growth so adding that to your health plan would be wise should you find yourself in the midst of menopause and suffering from hair loss and thinning.

Finally, exercise helps contribute to good hormonal balance, so be sure to walk daily and maintain a steady fitness regiment.

If you can, try to stay away from hair care products that contain chemicals and dyes as well as avoiding very heat-heavy treatments as they can compromise hair and scalp health. This won’t stop hair from falling out or thinning as a result of menopause but it will help maintain and keep healthy the hair you do have. Be sure that medicine your doctor has prescribed for menopause is not contributing to your hair loss and thinning.

If something you are taking is contributing to hair thinning, see if there is are alternatives. Hair loss and thinning occurring during menopause can have a very significant impact on a woman’s mental health and wellbeing.

To put is plainly: female hair loss and thinning is deeply embarrassing for most women. Add that to the fact that it is much less socially acceptable for women to suffer hair loss and thinning than it is for men and the combination is quite severe. And while the above will help, the only real true way to regain the lost hair is with an artfully and medically appropriate hair transplant.

Hair transplants provides a very solid and reliable solution for women who are suffering from hair loss and thinning due to menopause. This is because transplanted hair follicles will behave as they did in their original site.

Even in the most advanced cases of hair loss, hair follicles moved from appropriate areas on a patient’s scalp will take root and grow!

Hair transplantation works best for women who are suffering from hair loss and thinning due to menopause – the gold standard of transplants, FUE surgery, Dr. Amir Yazdan has performed crucially for over a decade. Reach out for a virtual evaluation.

Grow a Masculine Beard with a Beard Transplant

When hair loss affects the scalp, topical medication can be used to support hair growth. Unfortunately for the beard area, these same topical medications do not work. The most effective way to increase facial hair or improve patchy beard spots is through a beard transplant.

Facial hair is often associated with strength, maturity, and masculinity. A lack of facial hair or the inability to grow a thick, manly beard can be embarrassing for some men.

Their hair might grow very slowly, become wispy rather than full, and have a sparse, patchy appearance instead of growing in a full, uniform way.

Men dealing with this should know that hair transplants aren’t only for the scalp. They can also boost facial hair growth via a beard transplant.

Coupled with the recent trend of sporting a full beard, stylish mustache, or goatee, it’s easy to see why beard transplant treatments have increased in popularity over the past several years.

With this in mind, Dr. Amir Yazdan offers beard transplant treatments for men who want to grow a more robust beard.  A beard transplant is a type of hair transplant performed to increase facial hair in the beard area. A similar procedure can be performed to increase sideburn and cheek hair if desired. In some cases, a beard transplant is used to conceal scars caused by acne, injury, burn, or surgery, or to hide discoloration.

What Affects Facial Hair Growth in Men?

Most men begin to develop facial hair during late adolescence, typically somewhere around 16 years of age. They typically begin to notice a little fuzz above the upper lip and on the chin during puberty, due to the effects of increasing testosterone levels, but it can take a lot longer for their beard to reach its full potential.

During the years of growth, it is normal for a beard to appear patchy as it grows in. By the time a man has a pretty good idea of what his beard looks like—for better or for worse—the pattern of how his hair grows is mostly set.

By their early to mid-20s, their full, adult beard has grown in, though the coverage may continue to thicken and increase during their 30s. In other words: If you haven’t been able to achieve a thick beard by your late 20s, it might just be taking a longer time to grow in, so it’s important to visit with us to discuss a beard transplant and allow him to assess your face.

Also, keep in mind that the areas where facial hair grows and how dark or light that facial hair is vary depending on the individual.

Some men always have difficulty growing thick facial hair. Despite the common misconception, testosterone levels aren’t the only factor that affects how the hair grows in. Genetics are primarily responsible for dictating facial hair growth.

Some men enjoy thick, full facial hair, while other men seem to grow very little at all, or experience pronounced patchiness in their beard growth patterns. In some cases, men experience facial hair loss, which can be caused by genetics, surgery, injury, or intentional laser removal of hair.

A beard transplant will enhance facial hair symmetry. The objectives of a beard transplant will vary based upon the individual, but will typically involve thickening the beard area or filling in bald areas with hair taken from a donor area.

As with other hair transplant procedures, a beard transplant is performed in two parts, all on the same day. The first phase of this surgical solution involves harvesting the hair follicles from the back or side of the head. During the second phase, the harvested hair grafts are transplanted in the beard area.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Beard Transplant?

Your skin and facial hairline will be assessed to determine whether a beard transplant is the right option for you. Most men with spotty or thinning patches in their beard area are suitable candidates for a beard transplant.

The hairs on your scalp are commonly used for this surgery because they are very similar to your facial hair in texture and thickness. Patients will therefore need to have enough healthy hair follicles in the donor area at the back or top of the head to use for the beard transplant.

Beard transplant patients won’t need to worry about their hair being overly thin, as very few hairs are extracted and the reduction in the area is barely noticeable.

If they already have male pattern baldness, the harvesting may cause them to have slightly less hair to cover their head when their loss reaches its more advanced stages.

When is the Ideal Age for a Hair Transplant?

If you’ve been considering a hair transplant very recently, it’s likely that you looked in the mirror one day, maybe before bed or after a shower, and noticed a growing widow’s peak. Or maybe thinning hair or excess shedding after combing.

The shock of an unexpectedly receding hairline or bald spot can be quite hard to grapple with. You might have asked yourself: what can I do to prevent further balding?

Of all the questions you may have about hair loss, the most important one for you might be: Is now the right time to have a hair transplant?

Everyone is different. There is no ideal age at which you should get a hair transplant, just like there is no ideal age for a tummy tuck or laser hair removal. Some can begin as early as their early 20s.

Many patients, once they’ve had a hair transplant and have seen how relatively easy it is, wish they had done it sooner. But on the other hand, you may not want to jump the gun and start too soon. It’s sometimes smart to wait (only if you are in your early 20s) and see how your hair loss progresses.

Regardless, you should absolutely consult with a hair transplant expert and go over some key variables.

Your Age

Male pattern baldness, which affects up to two thirds of American men by the age of 35, can start showing as early as age 18. Typically, we don’t advise you have a hair transplant under the age of 25, even if you’re experiencing early hair loss.

During your 20s your hairline is still forming. What you may think of as a receding hairline may simply be what’s called a mature hairline, which is not quite the same thing as a receding hairline.

By the middle of your 30s any hair loss you may experience has typically stabilized.

This doesn’t mean you can’t have a hair transplant earlier.

A hair transplant relies on using donor hair from the back of your head. If you opt for a hair transplant too early, you may distribute the donor hair too heavily in one area, leaving little for future restoration. This is a common mistake lesser clinics make.

This also has to do with the natural density of your hair. You want to plan out carefully where to distribute your hair so as to achieve the best overall effect.

Yet even still, we have had patients as young as 18 with severe hair loss, and seeing their joy at reversing this trend at such an early age is compelling. So again, there isn’t an ideal age for your procedure. We can help you evaluate your hair loss and give advice as to what we think is possible given your hair loss.

What About Beard Transplants?

Facial hair is often associated with strength, maturity and masculinity. A lack of facial hair or the inability to grow a thick, manly beard can be embarrassing for some men. Their hair might grow very slowly, become wispy rather than full, and have a sparse, patchy appearance instead of growing in a full, uniform way.

A beard transplant will enhance facial hair symmetry.

The goal of the hair transplant is to provide a long-lasting and natural result that matches the pattern and texture of hair in the surrounding areas.

Patients seeking beard transplants tend to be younger – partly because beards have become fashionable in recent years, and patchy beards are often an affliction of younger men whose beards do not look ‘mature’.

Hairline Design

‘How will my new hairline look?’ is one of the most important questions patients ask us when they begin our consultation.

‘Will it look rounded, symmetrical, asymmetrical, more defined or less defined?’ It is a deep desire to want to know how the cosmetic procedure will look finished before it starts. People have a strong opinion and idea of how they want their new hair to look and move.

The truth of the matter is there is no one size fits all hairline that Dr. Yazdan, or any top hair transplant surgeon for that matter, tries to create. What looks good for one patient may not look good for another – what makes sense for a young patient with progressive loss may not make sense for an older patient with more ‘stable’ and limited hair loss.

In other words, hairlines must be carefully considered and customized for each patient.

A close examination of the direction, sway, swirl and grouping of a patient’s hair will tell us how most naturally to design the new hairline.

Recovery Time

While there are no real limitations on what time of year you can have hair transplant surgery, there are several considerations you should take into account. How long it takes for a hair transplant to heal varies from procedure to procedure.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) – our trademark and gold standard – is so popular because it requires practically no healing time. There is no surgical incision and therefore no scar, compared to other methods like the “strip method.” For an FUE you are advised to recover for 5-9 days.

Your head will be covered with tiny red dots from where the hair follicles were extracted and re-inserted, and there may be a small amount of swelling. While you should feel fit enough to go back to work after just 1-2 days post-op, most of our patients choose to take a week or two off to allow their hair to start growing in again, and the tiny punctures to scab over and fall off.

Mike Majlak’s Hair Transplant

We recently wrote a post on how millennials and even gen z patients are losing more hair than previous generations.

Androgenic alopecia (pattern baldness) can cause thinning of a person’s hair as early as their teens and early 20s. More than 80% of men experience hair loss by the age of 40 and nearly half of women experience the same throughout their lifetime.

This adds up to hundreds of millions of people struggling with hair loss around the globe. More and more celebrities are turning to hair restoration surgery to keep their luscious and flowing locks.

But does hair transplantation surgery really work? Who’s undergone a celebrity hair transplant? Is a new full head of hair achievable?

Yes, many, and yes!

The list of successful hair transplants is growing yearly:

  • John Travolta
  • Elon Musk
  • Louis Walsh
  • Joe Swash
  • David Beckham
  • Wayne Rooney
  • Gordon Ramsay
  • Ben Affleck
  • Chris Hemsworth
  • Brad Pitt
  • Naomi Campbell
  • Tyra Banks
  • Keira Knightley
  • Kristin Davis
  • Fergie Duhamel
  • Stephanie Davis
  • Oprah Winfrey
  • Jennifer Aniston

Mike Majlak, 37 years old, is a Youtube personality known for his association with fellow Youtube star Logan Paul, and their well known podcast ‘Impaulsive’. For many years Mike has been a highly popular Los Angeles socialite and celebrity. He’s also famous for wearing hats and other head gear to hide his thinning hair.

In a recent video uploaded to his vlog channel, a series called ‘The Night Shift’, Mike explains why he made the decision to finally get a hair transplant.

He explained how for years he was self-conscious about his receding hairline and wasn’t sure if a surgical solution was right for him. He held stereotypes about it’s validity and cosmetic effectiveness.

But that changed over the years and his excitement about his operation was palpable!

The results? Mike and his entire entourage were pleased with the results, and the change was as clear as day. Mike could see the lowering of his new hairline and was ecstatic about the future!
