Hair Transplant Consumer Alert

online hair loss prescriptions
Over the years we have found that patients were misinformed and even mistreated at other clinics. That is why Dr. Amir Yazdan formulated and distributed an official Consumer Alert document last year that clearly explains to consumers their rights, and to give them an idea of what to expect from a hair provider. We are digitally publishing the consumer alert for educational purposes.
WARNING to Potential Hair Restoration Surgery Recipients
As hair restoration procedures grow in popularity and accessibility, there has sprung up a dangerous class of doctors and clinics who have no business even approaching a patient’s scalp. These clinics simply hire poorly trained or unlicensed technicians to perform substantial aspects of hair restoration surgery – this is both unethical and dangerous. Many clinics offer hair restoration surgeries as a menu item alongside breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, and other peripheral cosmetic operations.
These clinics are neither specialized nor experienced in hair restoration and their operations can often result in harmful and botched procedures. We urge potential patients to only seek out board-certified physicians who specialize in hair restoration.
To further ensure that your rights are protected, be prepared for your consultations. Prior to each meeting, compile a list of questions that you would like addressed. Reviewing the information on this website will help you formulate some of your queries. Always ask the provider if the replacement method you are interested in will work with your particular type of hair loss; if you’re unsure of your type, first see a doctor who specializes in hair loss for a proper diagnosis.
Beware of False Advertising!
Some clinics will prop up an eloquent sales campaign and web presence to sell consumers a trap. Over the years we’ve sadly received many patients seeking to repair and correct the damage done by bad hair transplant procedures.
Top Hair Transplant Practitioners Will:

  • Have expert consistency and perform close to one surgery per day.
  • Oversee and participate in the entirety of the hair restoration procedure.
  • Be board-certified.
  • Be willing to share case studies and provide reliable testimonials.
  • Be affiliated with distinguished hair restoration societies like the International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons (IAHRS).
  • Provide a thorough exposition of the surgical or medical plan. What will the surgery entail? How many future sessions or appointments may be needed?
  • Be extremely patient friendly. They should not try to sell or seduce you into a quick and hasty decision.
  • Specialize exclusively in hair transplantation and hair restoration.

The Pinnacle of Hair Restoration

Are all hair restoration clinics the same? There are many fantastic providers to choose from, so what makes Modena Hair Institute the right choice for you? We encourage our patients to look around and see what is available. We are confident in our ability to serve hair loss sufferers like no one else. It’s important to research the various hair restoration practices and look at all the factors, not simply price. Dr. Amir Yazdan is a world leader in hair restoration and our clinic is a unique destination for those seeking the very best for their hair.
Specialized Expertise
There are thousands of hair restoration doctors and practitioners in the US alone. Some are cosmetic surgeons, some are plastic surgeons, others are aesthetic specialists. Some practices do the procedures themselves and some let technicians run the entire procedure. We know these things go on and we are on a mission to elevate the entire conversation. Hair transplantation is all we do, and it is all we will ever do. We’re masters at manual transplantation – no machines, technical operators or gimmicks. All of our procedures are led by the expert artistic eye of board-certified Dr. Amir Yazdan. We don’t do nose jobs or breast augmentation. We don’t do teeth whitening or tummy tucks. We do one thing and we do it exceptionally. We help you regain the confidence and robust image you have of yourself through hair restoration. That’s it. It is our mission and our obsession. We’ve seen the change it has made in our patients lives and we are determined to not only remove the stigma from hair restoration, but to continue to push the envelope of what’s possible.
State of the Art Method
Our medical director, Amir Yazdan, M.D., is a pioneer of the shaveless FUE. This is a very special type of hair transplant that leaves the surrounding hair mostly intact. Dr. Yazdan works around the existing hair to remove single follicular units. The hair follicles are then transplanted individually to the thinning or balding areas of the temple or crown. If done by a master hair restoration specialist, this method leaves no visible linear scar.
When every strand counts, shaving parts of your scalp for a procedure can be a deal-breaker. Some other procedures take a strip of scalp from the back of the head (FUT procedure). These other procedures leave a linear scar and larger shaved areas. While this procedure has its place, we believe that shaveless FUE is the current gold standard in hair transplantation, as it is most inviting to newer patients and hair loss sufferers. The patients who come to our practice for an FUE transplant routinely go back to work a few days later with no visible surgical remnants. This cannot be said of many other practices and procedures.
Elite Certification and Honors
Dr. Yazdan is board-certified, a long-standing member of the prestigious International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) and is recommended by The American Hair Loss Association (AHLA). He is also a member of the International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons (IAHRS) and is the only such member practicing in the Orange County and Las Vegas areas. Members of the IAHRS are deeply vetted for professional conduct. Members are held to the highest standards of consumer safety and satisfaction. He has served as an expert consultant at prestigious hair transplant seminars and workshops in the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, and the United States. Once you start looking at real credentials, the field of potential providers for your next hair restoration really begins to narrow.
Dr. Yazdan has also made numerous appearances on television and in the media, including: Dr. Phil, The Doctors, The Bald Truth, OC Register, Mogul Insider. His experience, knowledge and skill earned him seats at the 2019 FUE Europe Congress in Manchester, England and the 2018 ISHRS 26thWorld Congress in Hollywood, California, among other distinguished congregations.

5 Months after an FUE and I see very little hair growth. Did it fail?

hair growth after FUE
Name: Collin
Question: At the beginning of May this year I underwent an FUE procedure involving roughly 1600 implanted grafts. I was told by my doctor that full results don’t appear until well into the 12-month mark, but I’m barely able to see any growth now, at the 5-month mark. Should I not at least see half the growth since I’m at the halfway mark? Compared to other hair transplant testimonials, mine looks very unpromising at this point. Did my scalp just not accept the implanted grafts? Any help is appreciated, thank you.
Answer: There is no need to panic, although most patients will see about 50% growth after 6-7 months, we’ve treated patients who take up to 8-9 months or more to show real signs of hair growth. Each hair has its own unique cycle of growth, and depending on the timing and state of the cycle, it will take more or less time to grow in.
It is usually the case that around month three, patients will see the first signs of hair growth, although much of the area may still appear thin. Around month six is when a fuller follicular picture can be seen, and the transplanted grafts will begin to mature. Some patients do experience delayed growth, and this is need not be due to any shock loss or surgical mishandling.
Every patient has different experiences and reactions to surgical procedures, as all hair and skin types vary, but there is typically more than 10% growth at the 5 months mark. We highly recommend that you be patient and wait another three or four months to watch the growth patterns. If no more growth is forthcoming in those months then we recommend that you consult with a board-certified hair restoration surgeon (preferably the one who performed your procedure) and have them monitor your follicular progress.

Hair Transplant Repair: What Are Your Options?

A botched hair transplant can be traumatic to say the absolute least. At best, the scalp is scarred & the distribution of hair looks less natural than ever before. At worst, serious infections can occur & have a major effect on one’s health. The emotional fallout should be considered as well; for people who pursue a transplant to tackle self-image issues, there’s no worse feeling than ending up in a worse position with less money as a result of trying to fix it.

For people in that situation, things might seem hopeless, as though they’ve been removed from their old selves & placed away from them at an unreachable distance. We understand that fear better than anyone, which is why we’d like to let you know that there’s a way to not only undo the damage, but obtain the refreshed look you were searching for in the first place.

Many of the cases we see at Modena Hair Institute in Orange County are repairs, and they come in quite a few varieties. One major type of case we see is people who went to clinics being operated by inexperienced surgeons & assistants at a low cost. As we’ve written about on this blog before, going to a cheap clinic will always cost more in the long run, and you’ll have to pay with your confidence & appearance along with money. Many of the most serious cases come from patients who received a botched FUE transplant. Often times this is due to inexperience and obsolete technology and surgical tools; while an experienced hair restoration surgeon like Dr. Yazdan will use small punches ranging 0.7mm – 1.0mm in diameter today, older varieties used by inexperienced clinics are far larger, sometimes reaching a massive 2mm. These outdated punches will very often lead to the area surrounding each follicle sustaining great damage. Issues also tend to arise when inexperienced assistants, rather than a trained & licensed physician who specializes in hair restoration surgery, perform the procedure, since the skills required to competently perform these operations only come with years of training & education. Whether it’s one or the other, a mix of these, or other issues, it’s an unfortunate situation to say the least.

The other types of repair cases we see involve patients suffering a large donor scar from an FUT transplant that fails to properly heal. Whether it’s an error in the closing technique itself (a typical result of an inexperienced surgeon’s work) or an aggressive harvesting of hair to force results, these scars are understandably devastating for our patients.

Dealing with any of these fallouts is an arduous task, and reversing them requires heavily trained hands, knowledgeable minds, and attentive eyes. This, as a matter of fact, is exactly what we offer at Modena, whether you come into our Newport, Beverly Hills, or Las Vegas offices. Through countless hours of time spent with these procedures, we’ve developed a wide range of methods to tackle botched transplants of many varieties.

To start, we’ve found that patients dealing with damage from outdated procedures achieve significant results after we perform our repairs. As described on the Modena site, “…new, natural follicular units can be transplanted to soften or camouflage the old plugs and restore a natural appearance. In some cases, if the plugs were placed incorrectly, we can re-transplant the hair from the plugs to the correct area & [set them] in the correct growth direction.”

A patient of Dr. Yazdan who suffered a scar at an outside clinic. These images (left-right) show this patient before, immediately after, & eight months after the repair procedure.

Our years of experience also come in handy when repairing botched donor scars. Above is a photoset showing the steps in this process. A patient of ours was dealing with a scar along his posterior scalp after a botched FUT “strip” hair transplant performed at an outside clinic. To assist him, Dr. Yazdan took hairs from the undamaged parts of his donor area, transplanted follicles directly into the scar, and completely camouflaged it as a result. In less than a year, virtually nobody would be able to tell that there was any procedure done to begin with.

Even if the donor area in the back of your scalp can’t be used in a repair, which is unfortunately the case for quite a few of our patients, you still have a chance to regain your hair. When the patient in the video below came in with notable scarring & an unusable donor area, Dr. Yazdan, with the help of his longtime team of assistants, was able to extract donor hairs from the beard & chest, placing them in a way where they were indistinguishable from natural hairs from the scalp. No visible scarring resulted, and the patient gained a far denser hairline in turn.

To sum things up, a botched FUT or FUE hair transplant is far from the end of the road. When you come into Modena for a consultation, we’ll stop at nothing to determine every option you have in your hands, and we’ll dedicate ourselves entirely to giving you the look you set out on achieving from the beginning.

FUE Hair Transplant: How Long Will It Take For My Hair To Regrow?

Hair growth after surgery is the very first question that may come in mind. Understanding the stages how transplanted hair grows will help to keep expectations realistic.
Every person is different, therefore the rate in which your hair will regrow varies from patient to patient. In our practice, a well performed transplant will see results in as little as 4 months whether you’re acquiring FUE or Strip hair transplant surgery. Newly growing transplanted hairs start to become visible at this time however they are still not in their final stages of thickness and length quite yet.
Dr. Yazdan likes for his patients to come in for a post-op visit at the 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 9th month mark to compare your pre-op photos so we can discuss your progress, but expect to see the full benefits within the first year and maximal cosmetic improvement can be seen within 14-18 months.
“I highly recommend waiting a solid year before arriving at any conclusions as to the success of your hair transplant. At this time, if you’re still unsatisfied with the length and density of your new hair, talk with your surgeon. If you still have doubts, you may need to seek a second opinion.” Says Dr. Yazdan.
Once a hair transplant starts to grow, it will continue to grow until the end of the hair cycle at a rate of about ½ inch per month. The new hair which has been transplanted grows in cycles and will become fuller and thicker than the donor site over time.
And for optimal results, we like to follow a hair restoration surgery with PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) or laser therapy which can stimulate hair regrowth tremendously giving you maximal results. Light medical management is also highly desired during the growth period. Medical management consists of non-surgical methods such as minoxidil, finasteride and GroMD hair loss prevention shampoo.
Some might say the hardest part of a hair transplant is after the procedure is finished. Continuously over analyzing and examining each hair follicle, checking the mirror every few hours waiting to see results. Remember, be patient! Good things come to those who wait.

Eyebrow Transplant: Should You Try It?

Eyebrows are more important than ever before! With todays fashion trend, its all about the thicker, fuller eyebrows. The quest for fuller brows has made eyebrow transplants a thing these days. Let’s talk about who would be a good candidate:
Eyebrow loss can occur in both men and women, leaving them unsettled and insecure about their facial appearance. After all, eyebrows frame the upper portion of the face and eye area making this region the first thing people look at. Brow loss is most commonly due to injury or trauma resulting in scars, hormone imbalance, hereditary, aging, yet over-tweezing making the top of the list! Less common factors may be due to an attack of the immune system such as cancer treatment processes like chemotherapy-which for some patients, can be the most emotionally difficult part of the process as hair loss can be a tell-tale sign of an illness present.
Every day people are applying makeup to recreate a new brow or filling in what they once had. Thinning or hair loss of the brow region from overplucking was a common trend in the 90’s, as that was the time overzealous plucking in earlier years often begin to show up as thinning or bald spots. Overplucked eyebrows are one of the most common causes people seek out transplants. More than ever, people are pulling out all the stops to hide the fact that they’ve lost their brows, and often times the hair won’t regrow on its own. Fortunately, there is a Cosmetic treatment now being used for a more long-term solution using modern microsurgical techniques.
Eyebrow Transplantation is a surgical procedure to permanently restore or customize the brows by taking hair from another part of the body such as the back of the scalp and transplanting it to the brow region to create the desired brow shape. This procedure is quite meticulous and takes artistic design for a successful procedure. However, if done incorrectly, can leave you with redness and scaring on the donor site as well as uneven patchy eyebrows.
As with all cosmetic procedures, the key to a natural-looking result is to fully research the surgeon of your choice to get a good idea of the doctors skill when it comes to eyebrow transplants or any kind of hair transplants for that matter. “I can’t stress enough how important it is that patients do their homework ahead of time in finding the right doctor, otherwise they might end up with a botched outcome,” says Dr. Yazdan -whose patients fly in from other areas to seek treatment at his Beverly Hills and Orange County offices. It bears repeating that careful planning and precise angulation of each hair is critical for a successful end result.

How to find the right hair surgeon for your hair goals

If you live in a place like southern California, then you have quite a few hair transplant surgeons to choose from when shopping around for quotes, graft estimates, and consultations. It can be difficult to know which surgeon is right for you.
So how can you find the right hair surgeon for your hair goals?
Our recommendation: first, discover your hair goals, then, align them with the goals of your potential surgeon. If your hair goal is to achieve natural, full, dense hair coverage with an age-appropriate hairline, make sure your potential surgeon specializes in natural-looking hair transplantation rather than a plug-like style. If your goal is to restore your hair line, or revise a scar, make sure your surgeon specializes in these areas. A good indication that they are experienced in the area you are interested in, is to review before and after pictures, reviews, and case results of cases similar to your own.
Here at Modena, we specialize in natural-looking hair transplantation that is safe and effective. We utilize alternative methods of hair restoration such as PRP therapy and laser therapy to increase results and increase healing time.
Dr. Yazdan, our primary hair physician at Modena, has been transplanting hair for over 10 years. He is skilled in both FUE and FUT/Strip methods of hair surgeries. He performs each surgery by hand, utilizing his own hand-crafted tools to extract and place grafts. He is present during the entirety of each procedure and all pre- and post-op care meetings.
