How to Conceal Hair Transplant Scars

Hair transplantation is a common way hair loss patients introduce coverage around thinning areas of the scalp to recreate a fuller and more youthful looking hairline. Hair transplants come in different forms and are executed using different techniques. Strip excision (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE) are the two most popular and effective hair transplant techniques used today. Although certain procedures can leave scars, some are significantly more noticeable than others.
The strip method is a method of obtaining follicular units from a donor strip taken from an area of the scalp at the back or sides of the head, removing the grafts from the strip using a microscope, and then transplanting the grafts in the thinning areas. This is a method of obtaining grafts from the donor area whereby a strip of skin is removed from the donor area. The donor site incision is finally stitched closed.
A long and possibly wide linear scar is created with this technique (FUT), which can be noticeable for those who prefer shorter hairstyles. Fortunately, if you have a linear scar from a past hair transplant there are a few options you can use to conceal your scar.
Concealing Hair Transplant Scars: FUE Transplant and Scalp Micropigmentation
FUE procedures can help hide scars from previous hair transplants. The FUE technique removes the hair follicle directly from the scalp using sharp instruments such as punches and forceps. These hair follicles are then placed on to or near previous scars to help hide their appearance.
FUE does not produce any additional linear scars. It can also be performed so that growth of hair follicles are preserved in the donor region. This will help to maintain good coverage in the donor area as you wait for your hair to grow back.
Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is another technique that can be used to cover scars. SMP involves medical grade tattooing of the scalp to replicate tiny hairs. Micro-dots approximately the size of a ball point pen and the color of the patients’ scalp are meticulously placed in a pattern similar to previous hair density. This procedure can be used either to fill in between thinning hairs or to add the impression of more hair between transplanted hair.
These are just a few of the techniques that can be helpful to hide scars.

What You Need to Know About Scalp Micro Pigmentation

There are many different avenues to a fuller-looking head of hair. Some might get a FUE or FUT transplant (if they qualify), start using specialized shampoo & follicle activator spray, give laser therapy a shot, or try any combination of methods. We encourage all of these approaches, of course, but there might be another that you have yet to consider. It’s a fairly new trend, and it’s simpler than you might think.

Allow us to fill you in on what’s known as Scalp Micro Pigmentation, which is often referred to as SMP for short. To keep it short, the person performing the procedure creates a dense grouping of medical-grade tattoos, each about the size of the tip of a ballpoint pen, specifically matching the density of the hairs on that part of the patient’s head.

“Wait, but what’s a medical-grade tattoo?” You might be thinking, “Couldn’t I just have my local tattoo artist take care of it?” Let’s just get this out of the way now: tattoo artists are not qualified to perform SMP by any means. For starters, there’s no sort of major oversight group to monitor the safety of tattoo parlors. In contrast, the people cleared to perform SMP are strictly monitored by the state medical licensing board, meaning that they have to follow an incredibly precise set of guidelines concerning how these tattoos are given to patients.

A Modena patient’s thinning crown before & after their SMP procedure.

Let’s get back to explaining SMP itself, though. This sort of procedure can be useful for quite a few different people. For starters, if you recently got a hair transplant & want to make it seem like there’s more hairs between the transplanted ones, an SMP procedure can be an excellent option. It also works for people who want to fill in the space between thinner hairs, and if you don’t feel like having too much hair restoration work done, you can even have larger areas of your scalp pigmented to give the appearance of a very low-cropped shaved hairdo.

A donor scar resulting an FUT procedure, also known as the “strip” procedure, can be covered up in this manner as well. As another example, if a person decides to go to a less experienced hair surgeon before finding us at Modena Hair Institute, either at our Newport, Beverly Hills, or Las Vegas locations, we can utilize the procedure to cover up poorly-closed donor areas that would’ve stuck out far more clearly otherwise.

You can see an example of how this plays out in the first half of the video we’ve included here. This Modena patient was dealing with a rather wide donor scar that appeared clear as day along the back of his head. With some moderate pigmentation by Dr. Yazdan, however, one cannot tell that any procedure had been performed in the first place. The same can be said of the person appearing in the second half, who had a space in the center of their head & left with it not only looking completely filled-in, but natural in turn. When it’s all said and done, the results will end up lasting you around 3-5 years.

The best results, however, only come when you have an experienced professional handling things. If done poorly, the results can end up looking worse than unnatural. How can this happen, you wonder? Well, many of the negative experiences people have at outside clinics center on a certain safety factor that wasn’t in play, along with a lack of experience.

One of the main causes of a botched SMP procedure, for instance, is bad ink. If you’ve seen the results of botched budget tattoos people get on other parts of their body, imagine how that would look on someone’s scalp. It’s a sorry sight, to say the least, and it can be easily avoided. All you have to do is avoid the temptation of dubious budget clinics, where cheapness is often a result of cutting corners in safety. Instead, opt for a clinic like Modena Hair Institute, where board-certified & licensed physician Amir Yazdan follows precise medical standards to make the procedure completely safe & sanitary.

Of course, with cheap outside clinics, there’s also the risk of ending up with dramatically unnatural markings on your head, resulting from the performer’s lack of experience replicating real hairlines. Your surgeon should know a natural hair grouping like it’s their first name, and as you can tell from the pictures above, Dr. Yazdan fits that description better than any other hair restoration surgeon out there.

The long-lasting nature of the procedure means it’s more than vital that things are done right the first time. That’s why all SMP procedures at Modena are performed under the guidance of Dr. Amir Yazdan, a board-certified hair restoration surgeon & physician who has years of experience in his field. You can see various examples of his patients here, and set up a consultation of your own here.

hair transplant profit

Hair Clinics and Greed

It is no secret that doctors and medical practices across the United States must look after their marketing and sales with studious diligence. We wish that good work and word-of-mouth were enough to get new patients to come in for world-class diagnoses and hair restoration surgery, but sadly it’s not. In our internet age, digital marketing and sprawling sales campaigns are vital mechanisms in spreading the word about one’s practice and expertise.

Here at Modena Hair Institute in Orange County, Beverly Hills and Las Vegas, we are vocal proponents of quality professionalism in medical marketing, branding and sales. But as you can already guess, medical practices lacking the proper experience and expertise have found that they can portray themselves as industry leaders using sly marketing ploys and digital sleights of hand. Platforms like Instagram, YouTube and Facebook are rife with amateur clinics exaggerating their skill and pedigree. Tempted by the prospect of immediate financial gain, they will hire expensive media and sales teams that exaggerate their results, instead of putting in the years of hard work to actually achieve results.

But as Dr. Amir Yazdan explains Spencer Kobren’s show, The Bald Truth, the temptations of greed can also infect highly reputable hair restoration clinics, who will begin to sacrifice quality for quantity. World-class hair transplant doctors who are highly skilled in follicular unit extraction (or FUE), follicular unit transplant (or FUT), scalp micropigmentation and other procedures, are tempted to book more and more appointments, only to sacrifice their attention to detail and careful oversight.

Once a hair restoration practice has reached a certain level of industry popularity, they can leverage that celebrity to promote procedures and programs that are not in the best interest of their clients. A big-name surgeon may start to outsource and hire technicians to perform most of the surgery for them, which results in poorer patient care.

As such, Dr. Amir Yazdan limits himself to one surgery per day so as to have total oversight and command of the hair transplant. He is committed to manual extractions using the smallest possible punch, which allows for maximum versatility, adjustment and natural-looking design.

How do you compete with this greed? You don’t. What ethical and honest businesses need to do is rise above the temptation, knowing that those operating sleazy businesses are really in the minority and that they stand a very good chance of being caught and punished; they are not likely to be happy with themselves and their lives, and are not respected members of the medical community.

Honest and hard-working hair transplant clinics need to cling tightly to their ethics, values and good character. The business model that is based on patient safety and long-term satisfaction – one that sacrifices profit for real and impactful results – is one that will inspire and lead others in the industry.

It’s our job and our duty to earn the trust and admiration of patients and show them how hair transplantation and hair restoration ought to be. At our hair restoration clinics in Orange County, Beverly Hills and Las Vegas, we prioritize long term hair restoration results over quick fix procedures. We develop life-long relationships with our patients, many of whom return for advice and friendly consultation once a year, because we care about real life-changing results.

Hair Transplant or Micropigmentation: Which is Right for Me?

Male pattern baldness
When faced with a choice such as whether to have a full hair transplant or to opt for scalp micropigmentation (SMP) instead, it can take a while to decide. And that’s probably a good thing. Both of these procedures are serious and can take time to recover from, and should not be entered into lightly. It takes time and effort to locate an expert hair restoration practitioner and assess his or her strengths and weaknesses.
Therefore, weighing up the pros and cons of each and taking time to do so can make the decision easier and more informed at the same time.  The best option of the two procedures for you will depend on what you want as the end result – each one will (or can) look very different.
Scalp micro pigmentation is the process of tattooing ink into and onto the scalp in order to give the illusion of a shaved head rather than the reality of a bald one. No hair is required, and so for those who are entirely bald it is a great solution. However, the SMP will not feel like real hair, and it won’t grow either. Due to this, the only style available is that of a shaved head, and if you do have remaining hair you will need to keep this shaved as well so that the look is complete. SMP is useful for those who have lost hair in patches, as it can be used as a ‘filler’.
A hair transplant is a more complicated, more serious procedure. This is for men and women who are experiencing mild to severe hair loss and hairline recession. A successful hair transplant will leave you with a new hairline made up of your own actual hairs. There are no artificial tattoos, plugs or wigs involved. Strong and healthy hair is taken – usually from the back and sides of the head – and implanted into the thinning region of the scalp.
However, the end result will be that of a full head of real hair. This is achieved by using donor hair from elsewhere on the patient’s scalp and moving it to the place where hair is missing. This is therefore only possible if there is hair left on the scalp – a hair transplant cannot be achieved on someone who is completely bald. The hair created in a hair transplant should, all being well, continue to grow, and therefore the styles that can be created are much more varied than with SMP.

The Aesthetic Benefits of Micropigmentation

scalp micro pigmentation
Before – Thinning crown & After scalp micro pigmentation

There are tremendous aesthetic benefits to micropigmentation, only a few of which we will go over in this blog.
A growing number of working-class professionals are facing hair related problems like a receding hairline, excessive hair fall, thinning hair or pattern baldness. These problems can severely affect a person’s self-confidence. The hair restoration industry has been hard at work developing new and effective techniques to treat hair loss or hair thinning. One of the techniques to camouflage and invigorate a thinning scalp is called Scalp Micropigmentation or SMP.
What may look like a complicated treatment for hair loss, is actually what we can simply call a ‘hair tattoo’. SMP is a cosmetic tattoo that is done on the scalp, to give an illusion of a buzz cut on a bald head or fill in thinning portions of the scalp. It can be used to serve many purposes like camouflaging of scars on the scalp, provide a look of stronger and thicker hair and to create a look of cropped hair on your scalp. SMP also finds use in a number of different scalp conditions like scanty hair loss, alopecia areata, genetic androgenic alopecia, alopecia totalis, autoimmune diseases of scalp, alopecia universalis, lichen planus and some of the other types of scarring alopecias. Burn scars victims may also be great candidates for SMP.
Studies have found that about 42% of males between the age of 18-45 suffer from the problems of hair loss. Though the problem is more likely to grow as you get older, in some cases it can victimize younger people as well. In such cases, for men, the best way to go on is by adopting the ‘ruggedly bald’ or the ‘buzz cut’ look.
If you’re looking to improve your look while suffering from hair loss, then you could opt for Scalp Micropigmentation. SMP is performed by a hair restoration specialist and involves absolutely minimal time and recovery. Moreover, it needs next to no maintenance and you are free as soon as you leave the clinic to go about your normal routine!
Micropigmentation can be a tremendously beneficial and easy aesthetic solution for both men and women. SMP delivers great results in cases of thinning hair, where it provides an illusion of a full head, with thicker and stronger hair. As the picture above shows, thinning or baldness on the parting line or crown can be restored easily to its natural looking thickness!

Case Study – Facial Scar Repair via FUE from Dog Bite

In this day and age, we all strive for perfect skin and a healthy body, free of flaws! However, those accidents, injuries, surgeries, acne and even dog bites can leave you with unpleasant scar formations. If you’ve ever had a wound on your scalp or face, you may wonder how the wound is going to heal and whether or not the scar will grow hair. There’s good news and then there’s the unfortunate news…

The unfortunate news is that scar tissue happens to be a lot different than your regular skin. Scars are made up of abnormal collagen piled up in the location of injury. Unlike in ‘normal’ skin, this abnormal collagen isn’t stacked up in nice, clean ‘sheets’ of tissue. The abnormal tissue has a deficiency of regular glands found in normal skin…glands that produce natural oils, glands that generate hair etc. As a result, scars can’t actually grow hair themselves, and in this case, the patient needed some assistance with a facial scar revision procedure.

Now onto the good news (as you can see in the photos) – yes, this can be fixed and hair growth under and through a scar is possible with a scar repair procedure. This case study exhibits a 22-year-old patient who was once the victim of a dog bite leaving with him an undesired facial scar highly affecting the appearance of his beard due to the absence of hair where the scar has made its existence.

Considering the appearance of our face is directly tied to our confidence and self-esteem, this took a toll on our patient’s quality of life and decided to turn to Southern California and Las Vegas leading Hair Restoration Specialist, Dr. Yazdan for the repair of his facial scar. In this patient’s case, a simple and effective FUE hair transplant procedure was the best option and works well in scar tissue. Dr. Yazdan carefully and artistically angles the hair in a manner that you can no longer tell a facial scar ever existed. As seen in the photo below, our patient returned for his 1-year follow-up appointment to boast about his new appearance that gave him his confidence back!

At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan takes great pride in his work and patients. Utilizing a dedicated surgical team, yet always being involved every step of the way to ensure the best possible results.

Wait…there’s even more good news! In recent years, we’ve discovered that stem cells encourage new hair growth making PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma a great alternative to reproduce hair growth through scar formations. Read more on advanced PRP treatments here.

What You Should Know About Alopecia Areata

For many people whom lose their hair clump by clump, it may seem more like a nightmare than reality. This condition can have a very deep psychological effect on men and women’s lives. It starts with no warning and can be devastating to anyone who must go through this. Some people will get this periodically throughout their life, and some will lose all their hair completely or see patches that appear suddenly and permanently.
Alopecia areata causes a unique form of hair loss different to the more common age-related male and female pattern hair loss and typically strikes before the age of 30. It’s also the most common autoimmune disease – when the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues, even more common than insulin-dependent diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and thyroiditis.
About 30 percent of individuals who develop alopecia areata find that their condition either becomes more extensive or becomes a continuous cycle of hair loss and regrowth. The most prominent symptom of alopecia areata is patchy hair loss. Coin-sized patches of hair begin to fall out, mainly from the scalp. Any site of hair growth may be affected including the beard and eyelashes.
The loss of hair can be sudden, developing in just a few days or over a period of a few weeks. There may be itching or burning in the area before hair loss starts to occur. The good news is, the hair follicles are not destroyed and in turn, hair can re-grow if the inflammation of the follicles subsides.
The onset or recurrence of hair loss in Alopecia Areata (AA) sufferers is sometimes triggered by:

  • Trauma
  • Viral infection
  • Hormonal changes
  • Emotional/physical stressors

Thankfully, there are treatments that can help regrow hair faster and/or stop hair from falling out. Corticosteroid medicine can be injected into the areas where hair is falling out or missing completely. The injections are done every 4 to 12 weeks. Corticosteroid topical medicine can also be used as an ointment or cream put on the skin. These are often used along with the injections. Immunotherapy medicine is a form of treatment that causes an allergic reaction on the skin – which is what you want. Applying it once a week as a lotion onto the skin of the scalp. Topical Minoxidil is an over-the-counter medicine that helps stimulate new hair growth and slows down balding.
At Modena Hair Restoration we have also had great success with the use of PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma treatments for alopecia areata hair loss sufferers. PRP is an injection of a patients own blood plasma containing a powerful concentration of platelets that deliver an abundance of growth factors to boost healing and hair growth.
SMP or Scalp Micropigmentation may also be recommended at Modena Hair Restoration. Scalp Micropigmentation can be performed on the confined area(s) of balding or the entire scalp, including the areas where you still have hair. This is to ensure that your results not only look natural, but also last a lifetime in case your condition continues to progress in the future. Doing the procedure on the entire scalp can ensure any recurring outbreaks or changes in the patches will all be concealed permanently. This is the most effective and most natural looking solution to alopecia. A fundamental part of Dr. Yazdan’s profession is to improve the quality of life for all his patients. The results of an SMP are life changing for our patients.
The decision on the type of treatment depends on the type of hair loss, extent of changes, general health status, the patient’s age, and his/her motivation. Treatment methods should be chosen individually for each patient after an examination with a hair restoration specialist. At Modena Hair Institute, we provide both surgical and non-surgical solutions for hair loss!

Women: Is Genetic Hair Loss in Your Near Future?

Almost every woman eventually develops some degree of female-pattern hair loss and as many as two-thirds suffer hair thinning or bald spots. It can start any time after the onset of puberty, but women tend to first notice it around menopause, when hair loss typically increases. The risk rises with age, and it’s higher for women with a history of hair loss on either side of the family.
Androgenic alopecia, also known as female-pattern hair loss is characterized by progressive visible thinning of scalp hair or balding in genetically susceptible women. Hair loss often has a more devastating impact on women than on most men considering it’s less ‘socially acceptable’ for them. Alopecia can severely impact a woman’s emotional well-being and quality of life.
The most common type of hair loss in both sexes – in men, genetic hair loss typically begins above the temples forming an “M” shaped receding hairline, often progressing to baldness. Hair loss begins with thinning at the part line followed by increased diffuse hair loss. Fortunately enough for women, in only rare cases does a female’s hairline recede and rarely become bald.
It’s important to note- there are several potential causes of hair loss in women including medical conditions, medications, and emotional stress. Find an experienced hair restoration specialist to determine the cause before proceeding with any hair loss treatments.

Hair Restoration clinics will use the Ludwig classification to describe female pattern hair loss.
Type I – described as minimal thinning
Type II – characterized by noticeable decrease in volume, and noticeable widening of the part-line
Type III – displays diffuse thinning, making a see-through appearance on top of the scalp
FPHL (female-pattern hair loss) or the thinning of hair and subsequent shedding is due to gradual miniaturization of genetically marked hair follicles and represents shortening of the anagen (growth) phase of the hair follicle with an increase in the telogen/anagen ratio of the affected scalp. An understanding of the normal hair follicle life cycle is critically linked to an appreciation of the physiology of hair loss.
At the cellular level, follicle miniaturization is thought to be caused by a reduction in dermal papilla volume, as a consequence of a decrease in the number of cells per papilla. Nonetheless, hair follicles are still present and cycling, even in bald scalps!
While the clinically detected patterns of male-pattern hair loss (MPHL) have been described in the Norwood classification. On the other hand, hair loss patterns in females are typically characterized by preservation of the anterior hairline and diffuse central thinning over the mid-frontal scalp. However, there are exceptions where men will exhibit a Ludwig pattern of loss while some women can display a typical Norwood pattern.
One treatment option for female-pattern hair loss is PRP procedures with ACell. Platelet-Rich Plasma or its acronym PRP, is an injection of a patients own blood plasma containing a concentration of platelets that deliver an abundance of growth factors such as ACell to boost healing and hair growth. Dr. Yazdan has also had great success using Laser Hair Therapy, GroMD Hair Loss Prevention Shampoo, and in more advanced stages of female-pattern hair loss, a hair restoration surgery may be necessary in order to restore your hair. Maintenance is key in keeping the hair you have while producing thicker, healthier hair!
Diagnosing hair loss in females in known to be a little trickier than in male patients. At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan may order a blood test or perform a small scalp biopsy in order to determine the proper form of hair loss. If you feel you’re experiencing unusual or unexpected hair loss, Modena may have the solution for you!

Which One of These is Causing Your Scalp Irritation?

Most scalp conditions will eventually lead to some type of skin rash and unfortunately…hair loss! Whether it’s hereditary, malnutrition or an infection, a pesky scalp condition can occur leaving you wearing hats every day or in severe cases, hermitizing in the comfort of your home waiting for your unsettling condition to subside. Here you’ll find a few common scalp disorders and some helpful recommendations to restore your damaged head of hair.
Scalp Psoriasis – if you have scalp psoriasis you may see red, itchy areas with white scales on your scalp. You may even see flakes of skin in your hair and on your shoulders. These plagues can extend beyond your hairline. Besides discomfort, this condition can trigger feelings of emotional distress as a result of the visible and noticeable flakes on your clothes.
Scalp Folliculitis – is an infection with mainly bacteria of the hair follicles causing inflammation of the scalp. You may see small, itchy pustules on the scalp with its most troublesome area being the frontal hairline, although it can affect anywhere on the scalp. Another term used for scalp folliculitis is “acne necrotica milaris.”
Scalp Lice – most of you are probably familiar with this term in which tiny insects live on the skin covering a substantial portion of your head, eyebrows and even eyelashes! These six-legged creatures cling to the scalp feeding on your blood and unfortunately, these pesky little creatures do not go away on their own.
Scalp Ringworm – a sigh of relief – ringworm of the scalp is not actually a worm, in fact, it is a fungal infection of not only the scalp, but your hair shafts as well. You may have itchy, scaly bald patches often with flat centers and raised borders.
Seborrheic Dermatitis – a form of scaly skin and stubborn dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin disease that looks similar to psoriasis, eczema or even resembles an allergic reaction.
These skin diseases should be treated appropriately and involve the use of alleviating shampoos with active ingredients, topical creams and ointments, oral medication and systemic agents.
Using a powerhouse shampoo such as GroMD containing menthol, tea tree oil, argan oil and ketoconazole (ant-fungal) can reduce signs and symptoms significantly. ByeBye cream can also be added to your remedy as an organic and safe solution for all skin types including sensitive skin. Both GroMD and ByeBye cream are risk-free with a complete money back guarantee. For severe cases when topical solutions aren’t doing the trick, at Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan also recommends in-office or at home low level Laser Hair Therapy treatments exposing the skin to an artificial light source which works by reducing the inflammation. Dr. Yazdan sometimes suggests combining these treatments with other topical or systemic agents to enhance your results.
If you suspect you may have one or more of these feisty conditions affecting your scalp and in turn – your hair, Southern California and Las Vegas’ experienced hair restoration surgeon, Dr. Yazdan can examine your head, hair and scalp to determine the condition and can recommend the appropriate treatments and medications that can help correct and restore your hair. For instance, you may need a sample of blood drawn to check your hormone levels to determine if a thyroid problem is to blame.

These Grooming Essentials Should be in Every Man’s Bathroom

There’s nothing ‘unmanly’ about wanting to look good. Taking care of your skin and hair is just as critical to men as it is to women. “We’re finally at an era where it’s more acceptable for men to pay attention to skin and hair care” says Southern California and Las Vegas hair restoration physician, Dr. Amir Yazdan. Keep your medicine cabinet stocked and get the latest on grooming essentials, skin care treatments for thinning hair and more here in this article.
Use moisturizer with SPF daily
Without a proper moisturizer, your skin becomes dull and dry – not to mention the discoloration due to years of sun bathing without protection on your face, leaving you with loss in elasticity and protective powers. Hot showers, harsh cleansers and heat can also play a role in dry skin. With warmer days approaching, keep your skin hydrated every day by applying a moisturizer with SPF immediately after showering and washing your face. End all goal? Restoring youthful skin to make you look younger – something most of us take for granted!
Get your hair under control
Another telltale sign of aging. When you look good – you feel good! Not only your regular haircuts keep you looking polished and feeling good, but a powerful shampoo can be worth the investment. Thinning hair and hair loss is something most men will experience at some point in their life. In order to maintain the locks you still have, using a shampoo such as Doctor Developed’s GroMD not only prevents future hair loss, but also regenerates hair growth and strengthens your existing hair making it fuller and thicker with it’s rich ingredients.
Use a teeth whitening kit
Say goodbye to stained yellow teeth and say hello to a brighter smile! Whether you make an appointment for a teeth whitening treatment with your dentist or use at-home gels, strips or mouthwashes – a brighter, whiter smile can actually make you look up to 13 years younger! Don’t take our word for it, try it yourself!
Vitamin C face serum
If you’ve ever wondered why you should invest in a vitamin C serum, wonder no further. By boosting collagen production, a concentrated topical vitamin c serum helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and much more! This powerhouse ingredient is a potent antioxidant that fights against the many signs of aging leaving your skin healthier, smoother, and younger-looking.
Kiss chapped lips goodbye
You can start by exfoliating the dead skin on your lips with an extra toothbrush. After showering (and while your lips are moist) scrub away those dried bits of skin. Follow up with a lip balm to keep those lips soft. You’ll thank us later…
Minoxidil/Rogaine
Let’s face it, over half the population will experience hair loss by the age of 40 and many men can start to see the side effects of aging as early as 21. Male-pattern baldness is the most common form of hair loss affecting the self-esteem and confidence of many. Putting together a haircare regimen and using it continuously and perpetually is key. Think of your teeth – you brush them everyday in order to maintain healthy gums and teeth, right? Why should your hair be any less of importance? Minoxidil/Rogaine used in conjunction with a hair loss prevention shampoo such as GroMD works to promote circulation and blood flow in the areas attacked by the increase of DHT (the #1 culprit to hair loss). Invest in your hair – you wear it every day!
Dr. Yazdan has also had great success using PRP as a treatment option for combating hair loss and thinning in both men and women. PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentrate of a patients own blood plasma and growth factors injected into the scalp to encourage and accelerate healing. Hence why you may have heard professional athletes using PRP treatments for a speedy recovery of injuries. In-office or at home laser treatments have also showed remarkable success. Using treatments in conjunction with a hair loss prevention shampoo such as GroMD will aid in getting the best results possible.

Telogen Effluvium: The Second Most Common Form of Hair Loss

If you’ve been familiarizing yourself with the diverse types of hair loss conditions out there, you may have read the scientific term “effluvium” pondering on what that word even means; effluvium is the ‘scientifically correct’ term for the outflow, and anagen and telogen refer to the distinct phases in your hair growth cycle.
One common misunderstanding amongst most people is that your scalp is always producing hair. We hate to break it to you but, it’s not. In fact, each of your hair follicles go through a cycle consisting of 3 phases in which they grow, rest, fall out, and repeat! Another common myth is that your entire head of follicular hairs all grow at one time, yet, if that were the case – there would be plenty more bald heads bobbling around the universe at a youthful age. Rather, your hair follicles are typically all at a somewhat different stage of the hair growth cycle which consists of 3 phases: Anagen, Catagen and Telogen.
Telogen Effluvium is generally considered to be the second most common type of hair loss. TE is a scalp disorder characterized by the thinning or shedding of hair causing early entry of hair in the telogen phase. The telogen phase, or ‘resting phase’ last for approximately 3 months. Generally speaking, most people will have 10-15% of their hairs in this phase at any given time. Another fun fact: Most people shed approximately 100 hairs a day in this phase! With that said, if you suffer from Telogen Effluvium…you may see an inflation in the amount of hairs you are shedding in a day.
If you are suffering from Telogen Effluvium, you are most likely experiencing hair loss or hair thinning across the entire scalp. So, what causes this affliction?

  • Severe stress
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Dietary Habits
  • Physical Trauma
  • Medications
  • Post-birth

In contrary, Anagen Effluvium is seen in more rare cases in which patients have their hair falling out during the anagen or ‘growing’ phase of the hair growth cycle. The hair loss pattern itself, is similar to TE in that the hair loss tends to be in a diffuse manner. At any given time, you can expect to have 80-90% of your hair in the anagen phase. In hindsight, if someone is suffering from Anagen Effluvium, they will suffer from a rapid form of hair loss since a plethora of hairs will be affected. At Modena Hair Restoration, we typically see patients with Anagen Effluvium if they’ve had a cancer treatment such as chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.
Dr. Yazdan has had great success using PRP as a treatment option for combating Telogen Effluvium. Using treatments in conjunction with a hair loss prevention shampoo such as GroMD – keeping your hair follicles in the anagen phase longer will aid in getting the best results possible.

While there may be several treatment options available for men and women who are concerned about their balding or thinning hair issues, finding the right hair restoration specialist is paramount before proceeding with a hair transplant, PRP treatments, and medications.
If you are experiencing telogen effluvium or anagen effluvium and are interested in learning more about what hair loss treatments would be an appropriate solution for your specific needs, you can contact the Southern California and Las Vegas’ experienced hair loss physician, Dr. Yazdan, in order to determine the cause of your hair loss and what your options are for treatment. At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan is skilled in both surgical and non-surgical treatments using advanced technology fused with creative and innovative tools and techniques to give his patients optimal and natural results.

The Truth About Commercial Hair Transplant Clinics

Alike good health and youth, most of us take our locks for granted…until they’re gone! For many men and women, a hair transplant can bring back the appearance of a fuller head of hair. If thinning, balding or a receding hairline has you bothered – a hair restoration procedure is one way to have you feeling confident about your looks again.
Nevertheless, where do you start? Where should you go? And who should you trust? These are important questions to ask yourself before embarking on a hair restoration procedure.
First and foremost: Patients must educate themselves, to protect themselves from the unethical and predatory clinics that are out there. Here we’ll discuss the ‘big name’ clinics; their Illegal sales tactics and unethical behavior that’s vastly widespread.
‘Commercial’ (i.e. large franchise) hair transplantation clinics that have been around for decades, sure seems like a safe bet when considering a hair restoration procedure, right? Wrong.
If you do your research on these ‘big shot’ clinics you’ll find that some of them have been disciplined or sanctioned in over 20 states for false advertising, misleading patients, airbrushing photographs and other violations that have resulted in being penalized with huge fines, probation, and even being prohibited from practicing medicine in some states. These violations are taboo amongst reputable and well-respected hair transplant specialists like Dr. Yazdan and his fellow colleagues. Yet these medical clinics remain the dominating forces in the industry. How so? Because they spend millions of dollars on misleading and deceptive advertising year after year making them long-term repeat offenders.
Men and women are being urged to get a hair transplant even when it’s not in their best interest and aren’t a suitable candidate, because these large clinics have sales quotas to meet in order to keep dishing out millions in advertisement costs. And even with their “word of mouth” feedback being frequently negative, they still have a whole new crop of customers they can draw from who may have seen their commercials on TV, in the newspaper, or on the internet. Thus allows these clinics to keep churning out hundreds if not thousands of other dissatisfied patients.
Now it’s time to ask the hard questions for your Hair Transplant physician. Here are a few key questions that must be asked at the time of your consultation:

  • Does your doctor specialize in hair transplants? If so, for how long?
  • How many surgeries does your doctor perform in a day?
  • Does the doctor perform the surgery or does he/she allow their technicians or assistants to step in and do most of the work?
  • What is the doctors graft survival and success rate?
  • What method(s) does the physician use?
  • What punch size does your doctor use?
  • Is he/she a member of the ISHRS?
  • Does your doctor use travel technicians or does he/she have a set team in place?
  • Does your doctor attend regular training and medical conferences?

Here at Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Amir Yazdan specializes in Hair Restoration procedures and has for a decade now. Dr. Yazdan personally performs each hair transplant and is there every step of the way utilizing a dedicated team throughout the entire process. He is involved in every aspect of the procedure in order to ensure the best possible hair restoration outcome and is committed to performing only one surgery per day in order to provide patients with the undivided attention they deserve. At Modena, we utilize both FUE and FUT/Strip procedure techniques, using some of the smallest punch sizes to minimize scarring while maximizing results. Dr. Yazdan is a long-standing member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery and attends regular training and conferences to stay current with modern medical approaches to give you superior care and a more enhanced you!
As WebMD suggests – Avoid large hair transplant groups or practices that employ or contract physicians to perform hair transplantation under a common umbrella. Avoid practices advertising on television infomercials. While these larger groups have the ability to buy public opinion through expensive and flashy television, print, and radio marketing, this may not equate to superior surgical results.
Remember, just because a “company” or “practice” claims to be one of the largest or has been around the longest does not mean that they are one of the best. Do your homework before choosing your hair transplant surgeon.
Southern California & Las Vegas Hair Restoration surgeon, Dr. Yazdan, can often give the results patients’ desire in a single FUE or FUT/Strip hair transplant surgery, with future sessions to follow only if necessary. Dr. Yazdan personally performs each hair transplant in Beverly Hills, Orange County and Las Vegas surgical clinics at his surgical center, utilizing a dedicated team throughout the entire process. He is involved in every aspect of the procedure in order to ensure the best possible hair restoration results and is committed to performing only one surgery per day in order to provide patients with the undivided attention they deserve.

Hair Growth Cycle and Why it’s Important

Opposed to widespread belief, the human hairs do not all grow at one time. Rather, each individual strand of hair is constantly undergoing one of the three phases to determine whether it should grow and shed. The anagen phase is part of the hair growth cycle or ‘active phase’ when the hair enters a state of active growth. This is the only time new hair is growing. Most of your top hair transplant surgeons would agree that this period lasts approximately 3 to 5 years on average. At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan recommends the use of certain medications such as Minoxidil and Propecia to prolong the anagen stage which aids hair in producing longer and fuller hair, and GroMD Hair Loss Prevention Shampoo which rapidly helps in increasing the anagen cycle to stop further hair shedding.
What Happens During the Anagen Phase?

  • The hair follicle itself begins to enlarge and grow deeper into the scalp
  • When the hair follicle becomes deep enough, a hair bulb forms at the bottom
  • Connective structures called derma papillae fasten themselves to the bulb of the hair follicle providing nourishment so that the hair can grow
  • The hair shafts begin to grow upwards and outwards from the scalp. If an old hair is still present, the new hair shaft pushes it up and out of the follicle
  • The new hair shaft grows upward through the follicle, past the surface, and emerges as a hair strand

Is the Anagen Phase the Same for Everyone?
The duration of the anagen phase is mainly determined by genetics. For example, those of Asian descent generally have hair that remains in the growth phase for a considerably longer duration than other ethnicities. In some cases, scalp hair remains in this phase as long or short as their body hair. This results in scalp hair not growing more than just a few inches. Other factors that contribute to duration of this phase are environmental toxins and severe stress can also affect the length of your locks.
Is the Anagen Phase the Same for Body Hair as it is the Scalp?
As far as their components to growth are concerned, body hair grows in the same way as scalp hair. In other words – each strand of hair on the body are also going through one of the three phases of development. With that said, body hair remains in the anagen or ‘growing phase’ for a much shorter time frame than scalp hair. Hence why the hair on top of your head grows remarkably longer than on the legs, arms, chest, eyebrows etc.
Hair Growth Myths
The good news is, wearing hats and hair ties will not affect your growth cycle.  However, too much strain or tension on the hair follicles will result in a form of hair loss called Traction Alopecia. Traction Alopecia occurs in many African American’s  due to the culture of how they fashion their hair using hair extensions, weaves, dreadlocks, and cornrows over an extended period of time. Shaving your head is also a common myth and in fact, has no impact on the actual rate of hair growth. In other words, hair will continue to cycle through the three stages of growth regardless, yet wont grow in longer or thicker as a result.

Men: Is Genetic Hair Loss in Your Near Future

If you’re an adult with male-pattern baldness in your close family members, you’re probably quietly asking yourself: Am I going to lose my hair also? If so, when will my hair loss begin? What pattern of hair loss can I expect?
You are certainly justified in asking yourself these questions because male-pattern baldness or hair loss in men is the form of androgenetic alopecia hair loss that occurs in genetically predisposed people. You can thank your parents for this one! The genetic predisposition is hereditary and unfortunately, runs in families.
The fact that androgenetic alopecia is hereditary does not mean:

  1. Every family member will be affected by pattern hair loss
  2. Male-pattern baldness will follow the same pattern in all male relatives
  3. Male-pattern hair loss will occur roughly the same time in all family members it affects

Predictability of hair loss may come in future years once research can identify the specific gene or genes associated with androgenetic alopecia. Although the timing and pattern of this form of hair loss cannot be predicted with utmost accuracy, there are well-documented probabilities to consider. Southern California and Las Vegas Hair Restoration specialist, Dr. Yazdan would examine a patient’s male-pattern hair loss and includes the probabilities in his assessment.
Have you ever heard of conditions “skipping” generations? That goes for genetic hair loss as well. A classic study of pattern hair loss in adult men is called the Norwood-Hamilton classification which presents hair loss in seven categories, with additional sub-categories. This classic study showed 1,000 adult men with male-pattern hair loss. Some of their findings included:

  • All patterns of male-pattern baldness tend to increase with age
  • In types I and II, the patterns have the least cosmetic significance and had highest affects on men aged 18 to 40 years.
As you can see in the photo below, Type I is a minimal recession of hair from the frontal hairline near the temples with Type II essentially being a continuation of Type I.
  • “The Monk’s tonsure” Norwood Hamilton Type III pattern of hair loss becomes more common with age. Type III male pattern hair loss plus recession of hair from the forehead (Type IV and V) also becomes more common as men age.
  • Type VII, also known as the most severe pattern of hair loss, did not show incidence in men under the age of 30 in the Norwood study, and becoming more prevalent in men over the age of 60.

With this in mind, your hair restoration surgeon will need to find out if your hair loss is at the beginning or end of your hair loss, whether or not it is progressive hair loss and if so, how rapidly the progression will take place and the extent. Your family’s history of male-pattern balding may assist in estimating the probabilities for your future hair loss. Dependent upon the stage of hair loss and other deciding factors, you may be an excellent candidate for an FUE or FUT/Strip hair transplant procedure as well as many non-surgical treatments that are also available to you. Finding a skilled and reputable hair transplant physician is paramount when considering any hair restoration procedures.
At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan personally performs each hair transplant in Beverly Hills, Orange County and Las Vegas surgical clinics at his surgical center, utilizing a dedicated team throughout the entire process. He is involved in every aspect of the procedure in order to ensure the best possible ethnic hair restoration outcome and is committed to performing only one surgery per day in order to provide patients with the undivided attention they deserve.

Buyer Beware: Warning of Unlicensed Hair Restoration Services

Buyer Beware: Warning of Unlicensed Hair Restoration Services
Technicians & Assistants Illegally Performing Hair Transplants
22nd, March 2018
For Immediate Release
Las Vegas, Nevada

Currently, we’ve seen an accelerated increase in hair restoration physicians preying on vulnerable patients. Reports have exposed clinics in the Las Vegas region in which physicians+ are bringing in assistants, allowing them to illegally perform surgery under the credentials of licensed doctors. At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Amir Yazdan has had a great deal of patients coming from Las Vegas in hopes to repair their botched hair transplant surgery at a considerably higher rate.
ISHRS (International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery) reports hair restoration surgery is at an all-time high with almost 600,000 surgical hair restoration procedures performed in 2016. This is a 60% increase in just two years.
Patients seeking a hair transplant surgery should take drastic precautions and thoroughly research whether their hair restoration physician is an experienced and reputable surgeon and that all aspects of the surgery – from start to finish, are in fact being performed by the doctor and not a technician.
Warnings from the ISHRS caution individuals that may be buying unsafe, illegal procedures performed by technicians and assistants, not qualified surgeons. In recent years, an alert from the ISHRS shed light on the growing trend or epidemic, rather, of illegal hair restoration practices and the severe ramifications it could hold for unsuspecting consumers.
Patients are being lured by attractive and cost-effective hair transplant surgeries, but then there’s the classic “bait and switch” imitation happening where the actual surgery is illegally being performed. Doctors are stepping in momentarily, only to allow their technicians to hijack nearly the entire surgical operation. Leading to countless risks and complications including infection, severe scarring, cysts, low graft survival rate, failure of regrowth etc. This is a dangersome practice and places patients at serious risk. Unfortunately, this problem isn’t unique to Las Vegas, it is growing and effecting parts of the United States as well.
Although hair transplants are advertised as minimally invasive, would you allow a physician’s unlicensed technician perform your eye surgery? There is no arguing that your hair restoration surgery should be any different. Your hair restoration surgeon should be involved in the entire process and much of the work should never be delegated to technicians as they do not have the skill nor the qualifications to perform the surgery themselves.
“No one should think that even a minor cosmetic surgery isn’t surgery, as medical decisions need to be made constantly during cosmetic procedures and some type of medication is administered to the patient that needs to be monitored and, in some cases, adjusted during surgery,” says the ISHRS in a media release.
More information regarding wariness and safety measures can be found at Modena Hair Restoration and ISHRS.

How Many Hair Transplants Will I Need?

This is a very broad question yet one of importance to many patients we see. Some men and women are satisfied with one hair transplant, and some patients may want more depending on many different variables. For example, a simple hairline restoration – 1 surgery should be sufficient. However, depending on the rate of your receding hairline in the future, you may need a second surgery down the line to fill in the lost native hairs.
The complex answer depends on your hair history and several other factors including the quality (i.e. the surgeon performing your hair transplant) of your procedure and your desired goals, you may be satisfied with the results of your initial hair transplant, not needing to return for additional treatments.

Here we’ll discuss the essential factors contributing to the number of treatments you may or may not need. In general, Dr. Yazdan’s first hair loss treatment session is designed to add density to the patient’s hair, provide coverage to balding areas, and to add a permanent frame to your face.
Depending factors on the number of hair transplant(s) necessary:
The extent of your hair loss – There is a maximum amount of grafts that can be harvested in a single procedure to minimize the risk of scarring and maximize survival rate. ‘Mega Hair Transplant Sessions’ are considered advertisement tactics – which is another term for ‘overharvesting the donor zone’ and should never be advised.
The projected hair loss rate – This can be determined at the time of your consultation once evaluating the scalp and your family history of hair loss.
The amount of donor hair you can spare – Typically your donor hair is harvested from the back of the scalp between the ears considering this area is known to be DHT resistant. (DHT is the #1 leading cause of hair loss) Yet, some men and women have thin or sparse hair in this region. An in-person evaluation can considerably help your surgeon in choosing the appropriate harvesting technique whether it be an FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) or the traditional FUT/Strip (Follicular Unit Transplantation) method.
Donor hair characteristics – Shape, size, and color matter. This includes donor hair thickness, shape (i.e. curly, straight, wavy) and color. For example, African American hair transplants can be much more demanding as the nature of their hair can be denser and tends to curl or twist as it grows under the skin.
Medical considerations – There are many medical conditions and medications that can alter your hair loss and the progression rate. Identifying your hair loss dilemma is first and foremost before proceeding with a hair transplant.
The doctor performing your hair transplant – The quality of your procedure plays a vital role in your hair restoration results. Finding a hair transplant specialist that is well-qualified with an artistic eye can optimize your hair transplant outcome.
At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan can often give the results patients’ desire in a single FUE or Strip hair transplant surgery, with future sessions to follow only if necessary.
It would be best to have a meeting with a skilled hair transplant surgeon that could evaluate your hair loss pattern and come up with a master plan of action that best meets your needs.

Red Flags on Misleading/Unwarranted Information Regarding Hair Restoration Surgery

At Modena Hair Restoration, we understand the importance of hair loss sufferers being informed about hair loss and hair thinning and it’s causes, hair restoration procedures, and scientifically proven therapies to prevent and even stop your scalp from shedding too much hair. But what about precautions and red flags to look out for regarding physicians and the performance of FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT/Strip surgery procedures? With the incline in botched hair restoration surgeries and bad outcomes, we recognize many patients are being misguided by inaccurate or confusing messages and advertisements.
The lists below were developed to inform and protect patients seeking hair restorations surgeries and treatments by interpreting essential components that should raise red flags and should not be taken lightly. This also helps the ISHRS members from using prohibited, inaccurate, perplex and misguided information.
The following phrases are misleading marketing and advertisement tactics by Dermatologists and Hair Restoration physicians deceiving the public:

      • “Scarless surgery”
      • “Non-invasive”
      • “No incision”
      • “Cloning”
      • “No cutting”
      • “No touch”
      • “Pain free”
      • “Eliminates the need for additional surgeries”
      • “Hair multiplication”

The following are a misrepresentation of credentials & violating property rights:

Avoiding Unnatural Results

While the hair transplant industry is booming and we’re seeing more people turning to surgery to correct their hair loss; we need to be advised of the good, the bad, and the ugly! While there are medications designed to treat hair loss, many people are opting for the more permanent and lasting solution to their problem. As time has progressed, surgeons have continued to perfect the technique of unit extraction and transplantation. This has done wonders for all the hair loss sufferers out there in terms of not only restoring their hair – but their self-confidence as well.

In this guide, you’ll learn what you need to know about hair restoration before you embark on a procedure, so you don’t end up with unnatural, noticeable, and downright ugly looking hair – to be frank.
Let’s explore 6 concepts that can potentially make a hairline, and an overall hair transplant result look fake and unnatural.

    • Hairline is too straight (vertical) – This being a cardinal sin. When a hairline loses its ‘micro-rugged’ appearance, the hair pattern can come out looking simply ridiculous and obvious that it’s artificial. You want it to look truly ‘irregular’ (for lack of a better word) upon close inspection. What causes a straight or vertical hairline? This is 100% due to the skill of your physician. Transplanting hairs isn’t as easy as one may think- it takes skill and artistry to angle the site making in a proper manner in order to achieve a natural flow.
    • Unnatural grafting – this one combines a host of technical errors that include too large of grafts (i.e. 4 hair grafts or more) in the front hairline, the angles of the grafts being improperly too high, pitting from placing the grafts too deep, grafts being squeezed down causing compression because the grafts do not fit in the previously made sites.
    • Punch size – in terms of hair restoration, size matters! Punch size refers to the size of the tool used in an FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) in order to harvest grafts from the donor zone. Larger punch tools require larger sites to be made at the recipient area, in this case, your risk of scarring can increase dramatically. Many physicians either don’t feel competent enough to perform a successful hair transplant using smaller punches or they find it easier and quicker to use a larger punch instrument when extracting thousands of grafts, making it less taxing on them, yet, your paying the price with less than satisfying results! You’re risk of scarring goes up, while your grafts success rate goes down. Many physicians label their punch tools ‘A & B’ so you can’t see the size they’re using. Don’t let them fool you! Dr. Yazdan is one of the few hair restoration surgeons out there that are willing and able to get clean, crisp 1-2 hair grafts easily using some of the smallest punches.

  • Shape and position of the hairline is off– when the shape of the hairline (made by the physician) does not match the normal shape of a man or woman’s hairline, it can be a dead giveaway that a hair transplant was done. In addition, if the physician positions the hairline down too far (i.e. the forehead), this can also prove to be an aesthetically unpleasing appearance. Hairlines should almost always rest on the transition from the forehead to the scalp and not any lower. Another common mistake inexperienced physicians tend to make is not evaluating the hairline from the side profile as well. The slope of the hairline should taper off as the hairline goes back and if not done correctly, can be another dead giveaway.
  • Hairline doesn’t match the temples – when the hairline shape and the degree of recession are not matched, your results could look very unnatural. Rebuilding the temple to match the hairline can be an important part of the hair transplant procedure. Forcing the hairline too far anteriorly would mismatch the degree of the temple recession.
  • Hair plugs – let’s not forget to mention the use of hair plugs back in the day. The unsightly appearance of hair plugs… the fundamental problem with the unnatural-appearing hair graft is the graft size. Hair plugs use upwards of 20 or more hairs in a single graft which meant using a punch instrument of 1.5-1.7mm. Nowadays, some of your most experienced and highly qualified surgeons such as Dr. Yazdan use a punch size of 0.7-0.8mm extracting 1-3 hair grafts – smaller punches and smaller grafts spread out make for a much more natural look.

Can a botched hair transplant be fixed?
In these cases, you’ll be happy to know that a botched hair transplant procedure can be fixed. A knowledgeable and experienced surgeon can fix the issue, however its not easy and will end up costing you more in the long run so try to avoid this and learn from other people’s mistakes-not your own!
For such procedure, you’ll want to find a board-certified surgeon who is experienced in hair restoration. This is important, because the process of hair transplant restoration has its own techniques and methods. Unfortunately, there’s no quality control with inexperienced doctors using assistants or technicians to basically run their clinics. You don’t want your head of hair to end up in the hands of a rookie surgeon becoming one of his or her many, guinea pigs! In addition, it requires a special skill in order to work around scarring and other issues associated with a bad or botched hair transplant.
If you do choose to undergo a hair transplant, we recommend you take the time in finding the right surgeon. A hair transplant is a cosmetic procedure, you want to be sure to choose a surgeon with experience and expertise. While cost is important to consider, it’s obvious, you do ‘get what you pay for.’
Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr. Yazdan, adds, “My goal when I perform a hair transplant procedure is to make it almost impossible for another experienced surgeon in my business to recognize the hairline is ‘fake’ even with those of the most trained eyes.”
