Eyebrows are more important than ever before! With todays fashion trend, its all about the thicker, fuller eyebrows. The quest for fuller brows has made eyebrow transplants a thing these days. Let’s talk about who would be a good candidate:
Eyebrow loss can occur in both men and women, leaving them unsettled and insecure about their facial appearance. After all, eyebrows frame the upper portion of the face and eye area making this region the first thing people look at. Brow loss is most commonly due to injury or trauma resulting in scars, hormone imbalance, hereditary, aging, yet over-tweezing making the top of the list! Less common factors may be due to an attack of the immune system such as cancer treatment processes like chemotherapy-which for some patients, can be the most emotionally difficult part of the process as hair loss can be a tell-tale sign of an illness present.
Every day people are applying makeup to recreate a new brow or filling in what they once had. Thinning or hair loss of the brow region from overplucking was a common trend in the 90’s, as that was the time overzealous plucking in earlier years often begin to show up as thinning or bald spots. Overplucked eyebrows are one of the most common causes people seek out transplants. More than ever, people are pulling out all the stops to hide the fact that they’ve lost their brows, and often times the hair won’t regrow on its own. Fortunately, there is a Cosmetic treatment now being used for a more long-term solution using modern microsurgical techniques.
Eyebrow Transplantation is a surgical procedure to permanently restore or customize the brows by taking hair from another part of the body such as the back of the scalp and transplanting it to the brow region to create the desired brow shape. This procedure is quite meticulous and takes artistic design for a successful procedure. However, if done incorrectly, can leave you with redness and scaring on the donor site as well as uneven patchy eyebrows.
As with all cosmetic procedures, the key to a natural-looking result is to fully research the surgeon of your choice to get a good idea of the doctors skill when it comes to eyebrow transplants or any kind of hair transplants for that matter. “I can’t stress enough how important it is that patients do their homework ahead of time in finding the right doctor, otherwise they might end up with a botched outcome,” says Dr. Yazdan -whose patients fly in from other areas to seek treatment at his Beverly Hills and Orange County offices. It bears repeating that careful planning and precise angulation of each hair is critical for a successful end result.

Does it matter who does your PRP therapy?
PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. PRP therapy refers to a treatment used to reverse or treat hair loss as well as rejuvenate skin on the face or other areas of the body.
PRP involves taking a small amount of your own blood and separating out plasma and other healing agents that stimulate cell turnover and collagen regeneration. PRP therapy works to stimulate hair follicles, promoting hair growth and reduce scarring and wrinkles on the skin.
While PPR has shown great results in balding and wrinkling individuals, it’s important to note that not all PRP treatments are created equal.
Due to the higher cost of PRP treatments compared to other hair loss or wrinkle reduction treatments on the market, we see many patients who ‘shop’ around in an effort to find the best deal in town. The problem with this is that when it comes to PRP therapy, you generally get what you pay for. Cheaper prices correlate to cheaper processing equipment and less doctor involvement which correlate to less efficacy.
See, PRP therapy is a very involved procedure that involves advanced hands on technique by the doctor as well as high grade equipment to efficiently and effectively separate plasma and added components for increased benefit. Cutting corners to save money means cutting crucial aspects of the therapy.
Therefore, it matters greatly who does your PRP therapy. You can’t expect to have the same great results we see with true PRP therapy if you choose a provider who uses subpar separating mechanisms, no added nutrients, and is minimally involved.
Keep this in mind when exploring providers for PRP therapy, especially when seeking PRP for hair loss.

Future cure for baldness and graying – studying the KROX20 protein
Researchers in the UK stumbled upon a possible cure for baldness and graying during cancer research.
While trying to understand the way tumors form and interact with nerve cells, they discovered a protein called KROX20. The protein is commonly associated with nerve development and is present in skin cells that are programmed to become hair follicles and hair shafts.
These pre-hair follicle cells produce a stem cell factor (SCF) essential for hair growth and pigmentation. In mice studies, deleting this stem cell gene turned mice’ hair white. Deleting the KROX20 protein resulted in an absence of hair growth and eventually, bald mice.
While scientists were aware that KROX20 and SCF were factors in hair growth and pigmentation, they were not fully aware to what extent and the degree of importance.
The newly discovered connections are promising news in the hair loss community, as there is currently no cure for this ailment that effects over 80% of the US men and 50% of US women throughout their lifespan.
Future research will continue and hopefully answer questions regarding the effects of KROX20 and SCF in humans. Further, scientists are hopeful that down the road, the research will offer implications and insight into human aging as a whole.
While the potential KROX20 and SCF cure for baldness and graying is still a ways-away, there are some current scientifically-proven options for those experiencing hair loss. Stem cells have been helpful in reversing recent hair loss and preventing future hair loss through PRP (platelet rich plasma therapy). And laser-light therapy has shown great results in male and female patients alike.

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy for hair loss
To understand how PRP therapy is used to treat hair loss, we must first understand how PRP works.
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy is a treatment that involves utilizing platelets and plasma from your blood to decrease inflammation, promote healing, and stimulate new cell regeneration.
You can read more about how the platelets and plasma are extracted here.
Anyone familiar with this type of treatment may think it sounds familiar to other types of treatments, such as, stem cell injection. PRP therapy is very similar to stem cell injection and similar treatments. Additionally, PRP therapy sometimes goes by different names. The different names used for these types of treatments are given to them based on the technique, method, or additives used. But in general, they all involve extracting cells from the blood and reinjecting them into the desired area.
Additives that promote healing are sometimes added to the platelets and plasma concoction to increase results. This usually carries an additional cost.
PRP therapy can also sometimes involve the use of dermarolling or microneedling upon request. Dermarolling or microneedling is a technique in which the cells are reinjected evenly and dispersed throughout the recipient site utilizing a multitude of small needles. It is believed that the small wounds made by the dermarolling or microneedling allow the cells to penetrate deeper, encourage collagen production, and boost the speed and effectiveness of the results.
PRP therapy is most commonly used on the face and scalp. But it can be used on any part of the body that has scar tissue, inflammation, pigmentation, or wrinkles.
When used on the scalp, PRP regrows hair by decreasing inflammation around the hair follicle and promoting healthy cell regeneration. This treatment works to jumpstart the cells and follicles on the scalp and reset the hair growth cycle.
This treatment is ideal for those who have diffuse hair loss or thinning, those who have just begun noticing signs and symptoms of hair loss, and those recovering from hair transplant surgery.

Medical Management of Hair Loss
What is the medical management of hair loss?
Medical management of hair loss refers to utilizing various methods and tools to maintain your current hair and even potentially re-growing hair for those who are experiencing recent mild hair loss.
While most individuals who are experiencing hair loss are concerned mainly with the areas of hair loss, there’s one very important reason you should be just as concerned with maintaining the areas you still have hair: PREVENTION.
If you’re not actively working to prevent future hair loss, your hair loss will continue and worsen as you age. Dr. Yazdan believes proactively fighting hair loss is the only way to stall the hair loss process and protect the hairs you have now. The best way to do that: medical management.
Medical management methods and tools range from more aggressive methods like PRP therapy and laser therapy, to more prolonged and maintenance-minded methods like prescription medications such as finasteride, topical products such as minoxidil, and shampoos such as nizoral.
The great thing about these medical management tools is that many can be used in conjunction with each other and even with hair transplant surgery. In fact, utilizing multiple methods or adding them to your surgery can increase the efficacy of each method and your overall results tremendously.
But before you can get started, you should first see if you’re a candidate for medical management. While most individuals experiencing hair loss can benefit from medically managing their hair, it won’t help everyone reach their specific goals.
You should meet with an experienced and certified hair restoration surgeon to determine if you are a candidate for medical management and what methods specifically would help you reach your goals.
Here at Modena, in addition to specializing in FUE and FUT/Strip methods of hair transplant surgery, we also specialize in various methods of medically managing hair loss.

Does hair color affect thickness?
Generally, the rule of thumb is the darker the hair the thicker it is. Individuals with black and brown hair typically have thicker hair strands but an overall lower density of hair. While blonde hair individuals usually have finer hair strands but a high density of those hairs.
This is believed to be due to the amount of melanin in the hair. The more melanin, the darker the hair, the thicker the strand. Less melanin means lighter hair and a finer strand.
While these generalizations can help us track hair trends, they unfortunately don’t do much in helping us identify our hair type. Although we can correlate color and thickness, there is no direct causation between the two.
It is not at all uncommon for individuals to have dark hair and fine strands, as well as light hair and thick strands. What’s more likely to play a role in hair thickness is your genetics.
If you’re trying to decipher which hair type you have, you first need to find out if your strands are fine or thick. This can be done by comparing a strand of your hair to sewing thread. If the hair strand is thinner than the thread you have fine hair. If the strand is thicker than the thread you have thick hair.
Next, you need to find out the density of your hair. This can be done by parting the scalp in different areas of the head and noting the amount of scalp visible along the part. The less scalp visible the denser your hair is. The more scalp visible the less density you have.
Over time, our hair can change. This most often occurs with age. As individuals get older they notice their hair density decreasing. If you are an individual that falls into this category, you may be a candidate for hair transplant surgery and/or alternative methods to restoring hair loss such as PRP therapy and laser therapy.

PRP for facial rejuvenation
Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP Therapy has been gaining popularity recently thanks to celebrities. This treatment is also sometimes known as the Vampire face-lift.
For those who are unfamiliar with the therapy, Platelet Rich Plasma is derived from your own blood. This plasma contains growth factors and healing agents. Using a small amount of blood, the doctor separates the platelets and activates them. These platelets are then injected into the face or scalp and get to work stimulating collagen, improving texture and elasticity, decreasing inflammation and promoting healing.
PRP therapy is an all-natural treatment that provides incredible anti-aging benefits. This treatment reduces fine lines and wrinkles while adding volume to the skin. This creates a more improved and youthful complexion, giving you that healthy glow.
Dr. Yazdan believes a series of treatments yields the most effective results. Typically, 1 session on its own isn’t enough. We recommend 3-4 sessions for patients to see the results they were hoping for.
Here at Modena, we increase results by utilizing micro needling. Micro needling, also known as derma rolling, is a process in which thousands of micro incisions are made in the skin. The PRP therapy is then done right over the incisions. This increases absorption into the skin and helps the platelets penetrate the deeper layers of the skin. Micro needling has also been shown to stimulate the skin’s natural healing process by producing collagen and elastin. These two treatments work together to transform your skin’s appearance.
PRP therapy is good for both women and men. Those who are beginning to see signs of aging on their face and neck are great candidates for this treatment. If you would like to learn more about PRP therapy for facial rejuvenation, give us a call for a complimentary consultation.
Natural ways to prevent hair loss
While there are many medical methods to prevent hair loss thanks to advancements in hair restoration, there are also natural ways you can prevent hair loss in your everyday life.
Some of the biggest contributors to hair loss besides genetics and age are stress, environment, products, and diet.
Reducing stress in your everyday life can help reduce and prevent hair loss. Meditation, walking, yoga, and daily exercise can lower cortisol levels and in turn prevent hair loss.
The environment you create for your hair and the products you use on it contribute to the health of your hair. Tight hair styles that pull on the hair can harm the hair follicle. Additionally, hair ties can cause damage and breakage. Further, excessive use of hot tools like curling irons and straighteners can damage your hair.
A healthy diet with lots of water contributes to overall health and well-being. A healthy diet that provides the nutrients and vitamins your body craves will not only prevent hair loss but prevent other ailments as well and just plain make you feel better.
While improving stress levels and maintaining a healthy diet will help you prevent hair loss as well as promote a healthy life, tightening up these areas of your health won’t do much to reverse hair loss. If you are experiencing hair loss at a rate you’re uncomfortable with, you may need to utilize some more advanced medical treatments to restore your hair. There are many nonsurgical methods such as PRP therapy, laser therapy, and shampoos and medications.
If you would like to learn more about reversing your hair loss and re-growing your hair, give us a call. Here at Modena we specialize in the medical management of hair loss.
PRP – Who benefits from it?
Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP Therapy has been gaining popularity recently. For those who are unfamiliar with the therapy, Platelet Rich Plasma is derived from your own blood. This plasma contains growth factors and healing agents. Using a small amount of blood, the doctor separates the platelets and activates them. These platelets are then injected into the scalp and get to work decreasing inflammation and promoting healing and hair growth.
We know PRP is an effective treatment for hair loss, but who is it most effective on? The great thing about PRP Therapy is that it is effective on both men and women. Unlike certain prescription medications that are reserved only for men, PRP does not discriminate. We have seen amazing results on both our male and female patients. PRP also works on people of all ages. Some of you may have seen Dr. Yazdan on the Doctors TV show performing PRP on an eight year old patient with trauma scarring.
While PRP Therapy can be used in conjunction with hair transplant surgery, it is also a great solo tool for those who may not be ideal surgery candidates. You are an ideal PRP candidate if you are experiencing ANY thinning or hair loss, even if just a small amount. PRP decreases inflammation around thinning hair follicles which leads to thicker and denser hair. In addition, it prevents the dying off of follicles, which means PRP can actually save your hair and stop hair loss in its tracks, thus making it an ideal treatment for anyone who is just beginning to notice hair loss and thinning.
So, what can you expect after starting your PRP Therapy at Modena Hair Institute? Results begin to be visible after about three weeks and gradually increase over the following months. Dr. Yazdan recommends patients do at least four sessions to see desirable results. You can also increase results at home by utilizing dermal rolling.
Dr. Yazdan believes the best defense in fighting hair loss is preventing it. So start fighting back against your hair loss and give us a call, today!
Are women good candidates for hair transplant surgery?
Women can experience hair loss similar to men. It is often genetic and known as female pattern baldness or FPB. This often occurs during hormonal changes, like during menopause.
The difference between male and female hair loss is that women’s hair loss appears differently. Men often experience receding hair lines and balding of the crown. Women often experience diffuse thinning, meaning, the hair becomes very thin throughout the entire scalp. This can make it difficult to transplant hair follicles. If all the hair follicles (including in the donor area) are thinning and becoming weak, they are not going to be strong enough to sustain transplantation.
There is another type of hair loss that women commonly experience. It is known as traction alopecia. This is a fancy term to describe hair loss as a result of tension. This tension can be caused by braids, weaves, and hair ties. The constant tension created by pulling on the hair causes strong new hairs to not grow back. Unfortunately, this damage is permanent. But the good news is, hair transplant surgeries are effective on this type of hair loss.
If you are a woman experiencing diffuse thinning hair loss, you may not be the best candidate for surgery. Thankfully, here at Modena Hair Center, Dr. Yazdan is skilled in utilizing alternative methods of hair growth, specifically for women experiencing hair loss. We have seen fantastic results with PRP therapy and laser therapy on our female patients. If you would like to learn more about how to reverse your hair loss, give us a call today.
Regenerative FUE Hair Transplant by Dr. Amir Yazdan M.D. Orange County & Las Vegas Using ACell & PRP
Dr. Amir Yazdan M.D. of Modena Hair Transplant Institute introduced a new technique of FUE Hair Transplant surgery that allows regeneration of the Donor zone with subsequent use of Acell & PRP. He calls this Minimal Depth FUE and he offers this procedure in both Orange County and Las Vegas.
With Dr. Yazdan’s new technique of Minimal Depth FUE with micro diameter punch sizes, the surrounding adipose tissue is left intact leaving the stem cells behind which can help regenerate hair growth in the donor zone.
“This development is huge in terms of FUE hair transplant procedures. Quite frequently, I see patients that have had poor FUE procedures done in the past which have left scarring and depletion in the donor zone. With my new techniques and the use of Acell and PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), I have seen greater than a 50% regeneration of extracted follicles in the donor zone,” says Dr. Yazdan.
ACell is an FDA approved cellular regeneration product used in wound healing that has recently been combined with a patient’s own stem cells and has shown to improve hair regrowth for both men and women. ACell activates follicular progenitor cells (adult stem cells) and this is used in the Donor zone following an FUE extraction procedure.
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is a procedure in which a small amount of blood is taken from your arm. This blood is processed and from that, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is extracted and activated. This is then injected into the recipient site. PRP is loaded with growth factors that promote rapid angiogenesis, localized cell growth, decrease inflammation, and decrease healing time. Quick healing time is important for Dr. Yazdan’s patients in both Orange County and Las vegas because it allows them to return to work and their daily activities in a shorter period of time.
Dr. Yazdan states, “With the use of Acell and PRP, I have seen accelerated healing, reduced swelling, and excellent graft survival rate. I use this in every hair restoration surgery because it gives patients the absolute best results.”
Dr. Yazdan presents PRP Stem Cell Therapy on “The Doctors”
Dr. Yazdan helped an 8 year old girl who was the vicim of bullying with advanced PRP Stem Cell Therapy of the scalp which helped accelerate wound healing and regenerated hair growth. Dr. Yazdan was invited to “The Doctors” to describe the treatment.
