Is Hair Transplant Surgery Safe and Effective?

safety of hair transplantion
In short, yes. Hair transplant surgeries are generally safe as long as you select the right clinic and doctor to perform your surgery. The safety of hair transplant surgery comes down to experience, specialization and artistic ability.

Many clinics sell clients on grandiose expertise and then have assistant technicians perform most or all of the surgery, instead of the head surgeon. Their pseudo-rationale is that because they are overbooked and the surgeon doesn’t have the time to give each patient his or her full undivided attention, that medical mediocrity is somehow acceptable. Worse still, some doctors are non-hair restoration specialists but advertise total surgical competence in the field.

At Modena Hair Institute in Newport Beach, Dr. Yazdan does all of his own surgeries. He is involved in every step of the process from pre-op diagnosis to post-op maintenance and care. He only books one surgery per day so that he can make sure every single patient gets the best result possible.

An FUE surgery, or follicular unit extraction, involves grafts being punched out of a donor site and transplanted into the recipient site. Dr. Yazdan commands each punch for an FUE procedure and the punch size is a great deal smaller than most clinics. He uses a razor thin 0.7 or 0.8 mm punch size, whereas other practices generally use a 1.2 mm punch size. Larger punches create more scarring and sometimes damage the surrounding healthy hair.

Hair growth is not always in a straight line and the follicles are not always found growing straight back in the scalp. An experienced doctor will be able to look at the hair and tell the direction and the angle in which the hair is growing. This is paramount when doing the punches for an FUE surgery. Instead of punching a straight hole and cutting right through an angled follicle, they can identify and adjust to the hair growth. Thus, there are lower transection rates and higher yields.

Creating a recipient site for the new follicle to be inserted entails selecting an area where hair needs to be placed and then outlining that area. The doctor makes small incisions in the recipient site, where the grafts will be placed. The graft size must match the incision size perfectly. If the recipient sites are too large the grafts will easily fall out. Conversely, if the recipient sites are too small, the grafts will not fit inside.

Dr. Yazdan also does not cut or split grafts to increase graft number, thereby reducing the total cost of the procedure. Cutting and splitting grafts is needlessly expensive and can lead to decreased survival of the transplanted hair. A follicle could easily be cut during this process as well as dried out. Follicles are extremely sensitive, so the less they are manipulated the better.

A strong medical team is always needed and the surgical team selected by Dr. Yazdan has been with him for nine years. Yazdan and his team continually refine their method and optimize safety and effectiveness

The safety of FUE transplant procedures, therefore, heavily depends on the experience and expertise of the guiding physician, their operating method, and the nature of their instrumentation. Don’t risk your scalp – do thorough research and stick with masters in the field of hair transplantation.

Dr. Amir Yazdan, MD, is an internationally renowned hair transplant surgeon, expert guest on Dr. Phil and The Doctors, creator of the GroMD hair restoration product line, ISHRS member, accredited member of the IAHRS and a visceral advocate for patient care. A Quick Guide to Eyebrow Transplants

Until eyebrow care became trendy a few years back, it’s safe to say that many people took theirs for granted, thinking that they’d just stick around forever. And that makes sense, given that eyebrow hair loss isn’t as common as thinning hair around the scalp & beard areas. An eyebrow transplant has become the new way to forever fix facial aesthetics. That being said, there are plenty of people that suffer from thinning eyebrows, and if you’re one of those people, you know just how much it can affect your life.

Besides having to come to terms with painted eyebrows as part of your image, you’ll have to accept them as part of your routine. One woman who was featured on the hit cable show The Doctors discussed her routine, saying it takes an hour out of her day to make her eyebrows appear natural. If that seems like a long time already, think about how it adds up over the years. There has to be another way, right? Turns out, there is! An eyebrow transplant is permanent and simply refreshing.

You might have heard of how FUE and FUT hair transplants (both of which we perform at Modena Hair Institute in Las Vegas, Beverly Hills & Newport) have saved countless people’s hairlines. However, did you know those same technologies can be put to use fixing your eyebrows?

Eyebrow transplant procedures utilize both the follicular unit extraction (FUE) method (when fewer grafts being placed), and the FUT method, also known as either follicular unit transplantation or the “strip” method, when there are more than 2-3,000 grafts.

In brief, during this type of FUE procedure, the hair restoration surgeon will first use an incisional blade to create densely grouped incisions using an outline of your ideal brow shape. From there, they’ll extract donor follicles from the posterior scalp (perhaps the chest or back if the posterior scalp isn’t fit for donation), and conclude the procedure by placing them in the transplant area. When the procedure is performed properly, you can expect your full results to appear around six months after it’s all said & done.

We understand this can be a costly procedure, even when the area being worked on is relatively small, but we feel the need to stress that you get what you pay for with a procedure like this. Sure, there are clinics out there that offer their services for relatively dirt cheap, but it’s very unlikely they’ll have an actual physician working on you, and the likelihood of unnatural results & infection can skyrocket. That’s why you need to make sure you have someone with the proper experience & training performing your entire procedure.

We don’t offer anything less at Modena. Dr. Yazdan, a licensed board certified physician, who has had years upon years of experience as a hair restoration surgeon. He makes sure that your hair is in trained & qualified hands, rather than those of assistants, throughout the procedure.

So what else needs to be said? If your eyebrows have been suffering & you’re ready to make a change, the answer to your problems is just a call away. Be sure to visit our website to learn more about what we offer, and reach out to schedule your consultation today!

Why FUT Procedures are Still Valid in the Era of FUE

Over the past few years, the hype behind FUE procedures has been nothing short of overwhelming. If you aren’t too caught up on the development of hair transplant technology, this procedure eliminates a key issue people have had with the traditional method: the scar. Yet an FUT hair transplant remains a powerful option for certain candidates

To give some context, this method, known as the FUT procedure, involves taking a strip of the scalp from the back of the head, dissecting the follicles from it, and placing those in the problem areas on the patient’s head, creating more hair density and fullness to help them look younger and gain back their confidence.

This, of course, can end up leaving a small scar in the back of the scalp, although novice performers of the procedure can end up leaving larger & uneven scars due to a general lack of training & inexperience with the procedure.

Even when it’s minimal, those who wear their hair short will end up with a slight visible mark along their head, and we can understand why they would want to avoid that fate. For them, the FUE procedure, which we offer at Modena’s Southern California & Nevada locations, is a game-changer.

Breaking it down to basics, the doctor performing this will use a small circular blade called a punch to create individual incisions around each hair follicle, extracting the follicles from the donor area by hand. From there, the doctor creates the recipient sites on the patient’s scalp where those will eventually be transplanted.

What’s essential in all this, however, is that a doctor performs the procedure, not their technicians. Furthermore, the doctor needs to be capable of performing the surgery with many different instruments and devices, as not one device is compatible with every patient.

The other determinant of their success is the quality and size of the instruments the surgeon uses during the procedure. FUE can be done with different size punches ranging from 0.7mm all the way to 1.5mm. When a small diameter punch is used, such as Dr. Yazdan’s 0.7 millimeter punch, they can precisely harvest follicles from the donor area with minimal trauma to the surrounding follicles. Furthermore, harvesting small grafts allows them to be placed closer in the hairline to create a more dense & natural-looking procedure, while allowing the patient to heal much quicker.

When a large punch is used, it creates too wide of a hole, increasing healing time in the donor zone, while the end result is a larger graft that requires a larger recipient site to be created. This can lead to unnatural results & a delayed healing process.

Regardless of the procedure you want done, Modena Hair Institute has offices in Beverly Hills, Newport Beach, and Las Vegas which specialize in both FUE and FUT procedures. Dr. Yazdan performs these transplants himself at all three practices, using the smallest punches and the most advanced technologies available. His surgical team and staff has been the same for past 7 years, and their teamwork has resulted in real results for countless patients.

It seems, then, that getting an FUE procedure done by a professional is the only way to get this procedure done! Why bother with the strip method at all?

Well, we wouldn’t be so hesitant to knock down the traditional way of doing things. For starters, the FUE method doesn’t necessarily work for everyone.

If you need more than 2,000 grafts, or even 3,000-4,000, your other option would be to opt for the strip procedure. With the FUT transplant procedure, the doctor is generally able to obtain a larger number of grafts, reducing the need for the patient to undergo a 2nd surgery.

For patients undergoing the FUT procedure, especially those who need a larger number of grafts, we recommend you wear your hair a little longer in the donor zone, that way the small scar would never be seen. Besides that, we imagine you’d prefer to have one surgery that offers the maximum results. We also generally recommend the FUT method for women seeking hair restoration, as the FUE method requires the back of the scalp to be shaved.

If you visit Modena Hair Institute, Dr. Yazdan will bring his years of experience as a physician & hair restoration surgeon to the table, and you can be confident that only the most precise hands & tools will be put to work on your hair.

The Bald Truth: Debunking Hair Transplant Myths (Part 2)

Myth #7: An Unlimited Amount of Hair Can Be Extracted from the Scalp.
Fact: Don’t let false advertisements fool you with this one. The amount of hair that can be extracted depends on your donor hairs (I.E. the back of the scalp). There is a limitation of the amount of grafts that can be extracted in a single session so choose your hair restoration surgeon wisely and do your homework. If more than the safe amount of hair follicles are extracted, you run a higher risk of complications including the success rate (or lack of) the transplanted hairs, there will also be significant thinning in the donor area making it easily detectable that a procedure was performed. Choosing a reputable hair restoration surgeon alike Dr. Yazdan with high success rates is your best option for an aesthetically pleasing outcome.
Myth #8: Someone else’s hair is or can be used.
Fact: If you attempted this – your body would actually reject the hair unless the hair was coming from your identical twin. Alike a kidney transplant, hair transplants only involve the use of your own body hair whether the hair follicles are harvested from the back of the scalp (most common donor area), the beard, the chest, arms, legs, etc. Those hair follicles are then transplanted to the recipient area of hair loss.
Myth #9: Larger grafts produce more density than smaller grafts.
Fact: The density of the hair depends upon the number of grafts transplanted and not on the size of the graft. In fact, larger grafts may result in unnatural looking hair – think of the olden days when “Hair Plugs” were used. In fact, part of Dr. Yazdan’s practice is the repair of those unsightly hair transplants that used large “plug” grafts.
Myth #10: Hair Transplants Only Work on Men.
Fact: This myth has restrained many women from seeking a hair restoration surgery when in reality, they should understand that a hair transplant works effectively for both male and female-pattern baldness. Though baldness in women is slightly different from men and the supply of donor hairs are comparatively smaller in women – they can still seek a hair restoration specialist to see if they would be a suitable candidate.
Myth #11: You Must Take Medication Indefinitely to Keep the Transplanted Hairs in Place.
Fact: The reality is just the opposite. The transplanted hairs will be permanent, and you don’t have to take medication throughout your life for them to be permanent. The reason for this is that the transplanted hairs are DHT resistant. DHT is the hormone responsible for both male and female-pattern hair loss.

Myth #12: Hair Transplantation Surgery is Very Painful.
Fact: Most people don’t realize that a hair transplant surgery – both FUE and FUT/Strip method are carried out under local anesthesia and you will suffer from little to no pain during the procedure and after its completion. At most, you may feel a little discomfort, but most patients can enjoy a movie or read a book while the procedure is taking place. Most patients can expect to get back to their normal everyday lives within just a few days.

Still have more doubts? No need to worry – a transparent and confidential consultation with a top hair restoration surgeon can evaluate the health of your hair and scalp to give you your specific treatment options of both surgical and/or non-surgical procedures to give you peace of mind. At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan will carefully access the donor area, check if the new hair in your scalp will grow after treatment and will match the texture & quality of your existing hair and then decide whether you are suitable for a hair transplant surgery or not.

The Bald Truth: Debunking Hair Transplant Myths (Part 1)

Men and women who are currently suffering from hair loss, balding and thinning may have ‘thought’ about hair transplantation at one point or another, however, few people have the heart of a lion to undergo such treatment. Despite latest research showing that the hair transplantation market is growing rapidly, many still have false notions about the procedure. This has prevented many balding men and hair thinning women to take the initial steps to restoring their hair and self-confidence. Read on as world-renowned Hair Restoration surgeon, Dr. Yazdan, reveals 6 common myths and the opposing facts related to a hair transplant.
Myth #1: A Hair Transplant is not affordable.
Fact: The cost of a hair transplant depends on numerous factors and some surgeons will charge by the number of grafts transplanted – hence why the price can vary. At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan doesn’t believe in this approach and charges by case. Though a hair transplant can be a little costly, its certainly affordable and can change your life and the way you perceive yourself forever.
Myth #2: The results are unnatural.
Fact: Yes, in the beginning of times hair transplants did not look so natural with the use of “Hair Plugs” however, we have come so far in cosmetic surgery over the past few decades. In the hair transplant industry today, your results are determined by the artistic skill and experience from your hair restoration surgeon. A skillful surgeon can determine the proper angle and location to create the best plausible artistic outcome. Read how to avoid unnatural results here.
Myth #3: The larger number of grafts transplanted in a single session, the better your results.
Fact: While the goal may be to move as many hairs as possible in one session, “Mega-Sessions” however, are not advised because of certain risks. Mega-sessions that are too large run the risk of sub-optimal growth and scarring. Read our article on the risk of mega hair transplant sessions here. It’s important to have a consultation with skilled hair restoration specialist to determine the cause of hair loss and whether or not you are a candidate for a hair transplant procedure.
Myth #4: Its better have a hair transplant at the initial stages of hair loss, not when you’re older.
Fact: Generally speaking, there is a greater chance of having a successful hair transplant outcome when a patient is a little older rather than younger. It’s common for men to start seeing hair loss and even a receding hairline in their early to mid-twenties. At this time, the pattern of hair loss is still unpredictable, and the hair loss has a greater chance of being extensive in the future and may require more surgeries in the years to come. Read more about Hair Transplant Age here.
Myth #5: Robots such as the ARTAS or NeoGraft give you better results than the human-hand.
Fact: Although many people see newer technology as being “state of the art” this is by far the truth in this case. A laser hair transplant done by a robot or mechanical device is not the route you want to go and are not generally used by the most experienced hair transplant surgeons alike Dr. Yazdan. In fact, they were created to assist or guide inexperienced or “green” physicians from grimly mistakes yet, both the ARTAS and NeoGraft have their fair share of grimly risks as well including poor graft growth as a result from the laser damaging the tissue and concerns of the NeoGraft’s suction tears the tiny graft from the connecting fat tissue which leads to transection of the grafts and significantly impacts graft hair growth. You can read more about the use and dangers of robotic machines doing hair transplants here.
Myth #6: FUT is the better method than the opposed FUE method for hair transplantation.
Fact: Any qualified & educated surgeon who has both FUE and FUT/Strip technologies available at their clinic will not necessarily favor one method over another. Each method is patient specific and is employed based on the requirement of the patient. Sometimes even a combination of the two is used in order to achieve the best possible long-term results.

Still have more doubts? No need to worry – a transparent and confidential consultation with a top hair restoration surgeon can evaluate the health of your hair and scalp to give you your specific treatment options of both surgical and/or non-surgical procedures to give you peace of mind. A good surgeon will carefully access the donor area, check if the new hair in your scalp will grow after treatment and will match the texture & quality of your existing hair and then decide whether you are suitable for the surgery or not.

Should You Be Washing Your Hair in Hot or Cold Water: Pros & Cons of Both

While the temperature of your shower may not be the first thought that comes to mind when it comes to hair care, there are pros and cons to washing your hair in both hot and chilly water! Really, which is better comes down to a few key factors to understand:
What type of hair you have – curly hair has different maintenance requirements than someone with straight hair. The same goes for people who have thick hair versus thin hair.
What your main problems of concern are – it’s vital to listen to what your hair is trying to tell you and your hair will have diverse needs depending on what issues you have and need to address. For example, frizz, breakage, and unruliness all require slightly different care.
What products you’re using – if you’re using a 2-in-1 product, your needs will differ from someone who uses a shampoo and condition separately.
In order to decide if washing your hair in cold water is more fitting for your specific hair care needs, we will first go over the advantages and disadvantages of washing your hair in warm water.
Pros of Washing Your Hair in Warm Water

  • Warm water removes excess oil from your hair and scalp – this works well for people who tend to be more prone to oily or greasy hair or if you wash your hair every few days. On the flip side, if you feel the need to wash your hair daily, have dry hair, or your hair is on the thinner side this could lead to dry, duller hair.
  • Warm water opens the cuticles of your hair – alike your pores opening up in a steamy hot shower, your scalp does too! This allows your hair to be thoroughly cleaned, but…it does leave your hair vulnerable to breakage, over-stripping of your hairs natural oils, which in-turn leads to frizz. You’re even more vulnerable to hair loss or excessive hair shedding so be gentle when washing in hot water.
  • Warm water allows extra texture within the hair – this allows for extra texture within individual strands which helps the ‘staying power’ of any hair-do, gives the appearance of fuller hair, and prevents your hair from falling flat.

Cons of Washing Hair in Warm Water

  • Can lead to overly porous hair – which is brittle and prone to breakage and ‘fly-aways.’
  • Can potentially strip too much oil or moisture from your hair, leaving you with frizz – these cons are especially accurate for those of you who have naturally curly hair. At Modena Hair Restoration, we recommend the curly Q’s to steer away from warmer temperatures.

Now that we’ve discussed warm water, lets ‘dive’ right into the pros and cons of washing your head of hair in chillier temperatures.
Pros of Washing Your Hair in Cold Water

  • Cold water leaves your hair with a healthier shine – with extra moisture, come smoother hair which results in shinier and softer hair.
  • Cold water locks in that moisture – smoothing out the hair and generally keeps it healthier and more durable.
  • Reduces those pesky fly-aways, frizz and breakage – which is especially important for those of us with thin or curly hair.

Cons of Washing Your Hair in Cold Water

  • Flattens the hair a bit – with all the extra moisture your hair is getting it can weigh down your hair. Heavy hair is typically more prone, which can be hard to combat even with premium hair sprays!
  • Less of a clean – if you are prone to grease and excess oil on the scalp, the oil won’t be cleaned out quite as well with cold water due to the closing of the hair cuticle, similar to splashing cold water on the face closes the pores.

Now that you understand the pros and cons of both water temperatures, you should have a better idea which one is best for your hair type and your hair concerns. If hair loss is your main concern, start with using a powerful hair loss prevention shampoo such as GroMD and steering clear of warm water if you can withstand the icier temperatures. If not, try to at least rinse your conditioner out at the end of your shower with cold water to close up those hair cuticles!

Is Alcohol Robbing You of Good Hair?

Unfortunately, our hair is not alike fine wine and does not get better with age…or alcohol! While alcohol itself does not cause hair to fall out, it certainly contributes and depending how much you drink, it can play a bigger role than you think!
Ever had “cotton-mouth” after a night of drinking? We all know alcohol causes dehydration of the body, but what about dehydration of your hair? Truth be told – dehydration related to alcohol causes dry, brittle hair and even may cause dandruff on the scalp. Making dry, brittle hair more likely to fall out or break off and dandruff can make your hair loss even worse.
Sapping your hair of essential vitamins and nutrients – alcohol destroys folic acid, folic acid is a necessary vitamin we need to uphold healthy, strong hair. Excessive alcohol intake can lower your iron levels, leading to a hair loss condition called Telogen Effluvium. The hair goes into a ‘remission’ state causing it to fall out far too soon. New growth is stunted, creating a vicious cycle of no growth as well as losing your existing hair.
Boozing also decreases the levels of zinc in our bodies. With zinc being essential for healthy hair growth, low levels of zinc are known to speed up the aging process of the hair, causing more to fall out. Excessive alcohol also burns up vitamin B and C, and no…a Screwdriver is not a reliable source of vitamin C!
In our heavy drinkers, it’s very well-known that alcohol leads to liver damage, but did you know liver damage can stunt hair growth? This is mainly due to the fact of the reduced intake or preservation of nutrients – fewer nutrients, less hair growth.
So, to answer the question, yes…alcohol plays an indirect role in hair loss!
Hair requires constant nourishment to stay healthy and grow well. While everyone reacts differently to using alcohol, the time to start worrying is when your normal pattern of hair loss changes. At this time, it may be fitting to make an appointment with a leading hair restoration specialist alike Dr. Yazdan who can treat alcohol-related hair loss and stunted growth.
Your best non-surgical hair loss treatments can consist of a hair loss prevention shampoo such as GroMD that stimulates the follicles and nourishes the scalp, leaving room for survival of your frazzled, damaged hair. Minoxidil (Rogaine) and Finasteride (Propecia) are two highly effective medications approved by the FDA in treating hair loss by decreasing the production of DHT. Depending on the severity of your hair loss and the psychological toll it can take on one’s appearance, Advanced PRP injections and low-level Laser Therapy can be added to your hair care regimen for optimal results!
Now we’re not saying you need to lay off the booze completely – after all, a glass of red wine is good for the heart! However, adopting healthier habits and starting a healthy hair care routine can not only prevent further hair loss from occurring, it can also help in new hair growth leaving you with healthier, thicker strands of hair.

Women: Is Genetic Hair Loss in Your Near Future?

Almost every woman eventually develops some degree of female-pattern hair loss and as many as two-thirds suffer hair thinning or bald spots. It can start any time after the onset of puberty, but women tend to first notice it around menopause, when hair loss typically increases. The risk rises with age, and it’s higher for women with a history of hair loss on either side of the family.
Androgenic alopecia, also known as female-pattern hair loss is characterized by progressive visible thinning of scalp hair or balding in genetically susceptible women. Hair loss often has a more devastating impact on women than on most men considering it’s less ‘socially acceptable’ for them. Alopecia can severely impact a woman’s emotional well-being and quality of life.
The most common type of hair loss in both sexes – in men, genetic hair loss typically begins above the temples forming an “M” shaped receding hairline, often progressing to baldness. Hair loss begins with thinning at the part line followed by increased diffuse hair loss. Fortunately enough for women, in only rare cases does a female’s hairline recede and rarely become bald.
It’s important to note- there are several potential causes of hair loss in women including medical conditions, medications, and emotional stress. Find an experienced hair restoration specialist to determine the cause before proceeding with any hair loss treatments.

Hair Restoration clinics will use the Ludwig classification to describe female pattern hair loss.
Type I – described as minimal thinning
Type II – characterized by noticeable decrease in volume, and noticeable widening of the part-line
Type III – displays diffuse thinning, making a see-through appearance on top of the scalp
FPHL (female-pattern hair loss) or the thinning of hair and subsequent shedding is due to gradual miniaturization of genetically marked hair follicles and represents shortening of the anagen (growth) phase of the hair follicle with an increase in the telogen/anagen ratio of the affected scalp. An understanding of the normal hair follicle life cycle is critically linked to an appreciation of the physiology of hair loss.
At the cellular level, follicle miniaturization is thought to be caused by a reduction in dermal papilla volume, as a consequence of a decrease in the number of cells per papilla. Nonetheless, hair follicles are still present and cycling, even in bald scalps!
While the clinically detected patterns of male-pattern hair loss (MPHL) have been described in the Norwood classification. On the other hand, hair loss patterns in females are typically characterized by preservation of the anterior hairline and diffuse central thinning over the mid-frontal scalp. However, there are exceptions where men will exhibit a Ludwig pattern of loss while some women can display a typical Norwood pattern.
One treatment option for female-pattern hair loss is PRP procedures with ACell. Platelet-Rich Plasma or its acronym PRP, is an injection of a patients own blood plasma containing a concentration of platelets that deliver an abundance of growth factors such as ACell to boost healing and hair growth. Dr. Yazdan has also had great success using Laser Hair Therapy, GroMD Hair Loss Prevention Shampoo, and in more advanced stages of female-pattern hair loss, a hair restoration surgery may be necessary in order to restore your hair. Maintenance is key in keeping the hair you have while producing thicker, healthier hair!
Diagnosing hair loss in females in known to be a little trickier than in male patients. At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan may order a blood test or perform a small scalp biopsy in order to determine the proper form of hair loss. If you feel you’re experiencing unusual or unexpected hair loss, Modena may have the solution for you!

Which One of These is Causing Your Scalp Irritation?

Most scalp conditions will eventually lead to some type of skin rash and unfortunately…hair loss! Whether it’s hereditary, malnutrition or an infection, a pesky scalp condition can occur leaving you wearing hats every day or in severe cases, hermitizing in the comfort of your home waiting for your unsettling condition to subside. Here you’ll find a few common scalp disorders and some helpful recommendations to restore your damaged head of hair.
Scalp Psoriasis – if you have scalp psoriasis you may see red, itchy areas with white scales on your scalp. You may even see flakes of skin in your hair and on your shoulders. These plagues can extend beyond your hairline. Besides discomfort, this condition can trigger feelings of emotional distress as a result of the visible and noticeable flakes on your clothes.
Scalp Folliculitis – is an infection with mainly bacteria of the hair follicles causing inflammation of the scalp. You may see small, itchy pustules on the scalp with its most troublesome area being the frontal hairline, although it can affect anywhere on the scalp. Another term used for scalp folliculitis is “acne necrotica milaris.”
Scalp Lice – most of you are probably familiar with this term in which tiny insects live on the skin covering a substantial portion of your head, eyebrows and even eyelashes! These six-legged creatures cling to the scalp feeding on your blood and unfortunately, these pesky little creatures do not go away on their own.
Scalp Ringworm – a sigh of relief – ringworm of the scalp is not actually a worm, in fact, it is a fungal infection of not only the scalp, but your hair shafts as well. You may have itchy, scaly bald patches often with flat centers and raised borders.
Seborrheic Dermatitis – a form of scaly skin and stubborn dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin disease that looks similar to psoriasis, eczema or even resembles an allergic reaction.
These skin diseases should be treated appropriately and involve the use of alleviating shampoos with active ingredients, topical creams and ointments, oral medication and systemic agents.
Using a powerhouse shampoo such as GroMD containing menthol, tea tree oil, argan oil and ketoconazole (ant-fungal) can reduce signs and symptoms significantly. ByeBye cream can also be added to your remedy as an organic and safe solution for all skin types including sensitive skin. Both GroMD and ByeBye cream are risk-free with a complete money back guarantee. For severe cases when topical solutions aren’t doing the trick, at Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan also recommends in-office or at home low level Laser Hair Therapy treatments exposing the skin to an artificial light source which works by reducing the inflammation. Dr. Yazdan sometimes suggests combining these treatments with other topical or systemic agents to enhance your results.
If you suspect you may have one or more of these feisty conditions affecting your scalp and in turn – your hair, Southern California and Las Vegas’ experienced hair restoration surgeon, Dr. Yazdan can examine your head, hair and scalp to determine the condition and can recommend the appropriate treatments and medications that can help correct and restore your hair. For instance, you may need a sample of blood drawn to check your hormone levels to determine if a thyroid problem is to blame.

Thinning hair and hair loss is something most men will experience at some point in their life. In order to maintain the locks you still have, using a shampoo such as Doctor Developed’s GroMD not only prevents future hair loss, but also regenerates hair growth and strengthens your existing hair making it fuller and thicker with it’s rich ingredients.
Use a teeth whitening kit
Say goodbye to stained yellow teeth and say hello to a brighter smile! Whether you make an appointment for a teeth whitening treatment with your dentist or use at-home gels, strips or mouthwashes – a brighter, whiter smile can actually make you look up to 13 years younger! Minoxidil/Rogaine
Let’s face it, over half the population will experience hair loss by the age of 40 and many men can start to see the side effects of aging as early as 21. Male-pattern baldness is the most common form of hair loss affecting the self-esteem and confidence of many. Putting together a haircare regimen and using it continuously and perpetually is key. Think of your teeth – you brush them everyday in order to maintain healthy gums and teeth, right? Why should your hair be any less of importance? Minoxidil/Rogaine used in conjunction with a hair loss prevention shampoo such as GroMD works to promote circulation and blood flow in the areas attacked by the increase of DHT (the #1 culprit to hair loss). Invest in your hair – you wear it every day!
Dr. Yazdan has also had great success using PRP as a treatment option for combating hair loss and thinning in both men and women. PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentrate of a patients own blood plasma and growth factors injected into the scalp to encourage and accelerate healing. Hence why you may have heard professional athletes using PRP treatments for a speedy recovery of injuries. In-office or at home laser treatments have also showed remarkable success. Using treatments in conjunction with a hair loss prevention shampoo such as GroMD will aid in getting the best results possible.

Telogen Effluvium: The Second Most Common Form of Hair Loss

If you’ve been familiarizing yourself with the diverse types of hair loss conditions out there, you may have read the scientific term “effluvium” pondering on what that word even means; effluvium is the ‘scientifically correct’ term for the outflow, and anagen and telogen refer to the distinct phases in your hair growth cycle.
One common misunderstanding amongst most people is that your scalp is always producing hair. We hate to break it to you but, it’s not. In fact, each of your hair follicles go through a cycle consisting of 3 phases in which they grow, rest, fall out, and repeat! Another common myth is that your entire head of follicular hairs all grow at one time, yet, if that were the case – there would be plenty more bald heads bobbling around the universe at a youthful age. Rather, your hair follicles are typically all at a somewhat different stage of the hair growth cycle which consists of 3 phases: Anagen, Catagen and Telogen.
Telogen Effluvium is generally considered to be the second most common type of hair loss. TE is a scalp disorder characterized by the thinning or shedding of hair causing early entry of hair in the telogen phase. The telogen phase, or ‘resting phase’ last for approximately 3 months. Generally speaking, most people will have 10-15% of their hairs in this phase at any given time. Another fun fact: Most people shed approximately 100 hairs a day in this phase! With that said, if you suffer from Telogen Effluvium…you may see an inflation in the amount of hairs you are shedding in a day.
If you are suffering from Telogen Effluvium, you are most likely experiencing hair loss or hair thinning across the entire scalp. So, what causes this affliction?

  • Severe stress
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Dietary Habits
  • Physical Trauma
  • Medications
  • Post-birth

In contrary, Anagen Effluvium is seen in more rare cases in which patients have their hair falling out during the anagen or ‘growing’ phase of the hair growth cycle. The hair loss pattern itself, is similar to TE in that the hair loss tends to be in a diffuse manner. At any given time, you can expect to have 80-90% of your hair in the anagen phase. In hindsight, if someone is suffering from Anagen Effluvium, they will suffer from a rapid form of hair loss since a plethora of hairs will be affected. At Modena Hair Restoration, we typically see patients with Anagen Effluvium if they’ve had a cancer treatment such as chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.
Dr. Yazdan has had great success using PRP as a treatment option for combating Telogen Effluvium. Using treatments in conjunction with a hair loss prevention shampoo such as GroMD – keeping your hair follicles in the anagen phase longer will aid in getting the best results possible.

While there may be several treatment options available for men and women who are concerned about their balding or thinning hair issues, finding the right hair restoration specialist is paramount before proceeding with a hair transplant, PRP treatments, and medications.
If you are experiencing telogen effluvium or anagen effluvium and are interested in learning more about what hair loss treatments would be an appropriate solution for your specific needs, you can contact the Southern California and Las Vegas’ experienced hair loss physician, Dr. Yazdan, in order to determine the cause of your hair loss and what your options are for treatment. The Truth About Commercial Hair Transplant Clinics

Alike good health and youth, most of us take our locks for granted…until they’re gone! For many men and women, a hair transplant can bring back the appearance of a fuller head of hair. If thinning, balding or a receding hairline has you bothered – a hair restoration procedure is one way to have you feeling confident about your looks again.
Nevertheless, where do you start? Where should you go? And who should you trust? These are important questions to ask yourself before embarking on a hair restoration procedure.
First and foremost: Patients must educate themselves, to protect themselves from the unethical and predatory clinics that are out there. Here we’ll discuss the ‘big name’ clinics; their Illegal sales tactics and unethical behavior that’s vastly widespread.
‘Commercial’ (i.e. large franchise) hair transplantation clinics that have been around for decades, sure seems like a safe bet when considering a hair restoration procedure, right? Wrong.
If you do your research on these ‘big shot’ clinics you’ll find that some of them have been disciplined or sanctioned in over 20 states for false advertising, misleading patients, airbrushing photographs and other violations that have resulted in being penalized with huge fines, probation, and even being prohibited from practicing medicine in some states. These violations are taboo amongst reputable and well-respected hair transplant specialists like Dr. Yazdan and his fellow colleagues. Yet these medical clinics remain the dominating forces in the industry. How so? Because they spend millions of dollars on misleading and deceptive advertising year after year making them long-term repeat offenders.
Men and women are being urged to get a hair transplant even when it’s not in their best interest and aren’t a suitable candidate, because these large clinics have sales quotas to meet in order to keep dishing out millions in advertisement costs. And even with their “word of mouth” feedback being frequently negative, they still have a whole new crop of customers they can draw from who may have seen their commercials on TV, in the newspaper, or on the internet. Thus allows these clinics to keep churning out hundreds if not thousands of other dissatisfied patients.
Now it’s time to ask the hard questions for your Hair Transplant physician. Here are a few key questions that must be asked at the time of your consultation:

  • Does your doctor specialize in hair transplants? If so, for how long?
  • How many surgeries does your doctor perform in a day?
  • Does the doctor perform the surgery or does he/she allow their technicians or assistants to step in and do most of the work?
  • What is the doctors graft survival and success rate?
  • What method(s) does the physician use?
  • What punch size does your doctor use?
  • Is he/she a member of the ISHRS?
  • Does your doctor use travel technicians or does he/she have a set team in place?
  • Does your doctor attend regular training and medical conferences?

Here at Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Amir Yazdan specializes in Hair Restoration procedures and has for a decade now. Dr. Yazdan personally performs each hair transplant and is there every step of the way utilizing a dedicated team throughout the entire process. He is involved in every aspect of the procedure in order to ensure the best possible hair restoration outcome and is committed to performing only one surgery per day in order to provide patients with the undivided attention they deserve. At Modena, we utilize both FUE and FUT/Strip procedure techniques, using some of the smallest punch sizes to minimize scarring while maximizing results. Dr. Yazdan is a long-standing member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery and attends regular training and conferences to stay current with modern medical approaches to give you superior care and a more enhanced you!
As WebMD suggests – Avoid large hair transplant groups or practices that employ or contract physicians to perform hair transplantation under a common umbrella. Avoid practices advertising on television infomercials. While these larger groups have the ability to buy public opinion through expensive and flashy television, print, and radio marketing, this may not equate to superior surgical results.
Remember, just because a “company” or “practice” claims to be one of the largest or has been around the longest does not mean that they are one of the best. Do your homework before choosing your hair transplant surgeon.
Southern California & Las Vegas Hair Restoration surgeon, Dr. Yazdan, can often give the results patients’ desire in a single FUE or FUT/Strip hair transplant surgery, with future sessions to follow only if necessary. Dr. Yazdan personally performs each hair transplant in Beverly Hills, Orange County and Las Vegas surgical clinics at his surgical center, utilizing a dedicated team throughout the entire process. He is involved in every aspect of the procedure in order to ensure the best possible hair restoration results and is committed to performing only one surgery per day in order to provide patients with the undivided attention they deserve.

Hair Growth Cycle and Why it’s Important

Opposed to widespread belief, the human hairs do not all grow at one time. Rather, each individual strand of hair is constantly undergoing one of the three phases to determine whether it should grow and shed. The anagen phase is part of the hair growth cycle or ‘active phase’ when the hair enters a state of active growth. This is the only time new hair is growing. Most of your top hair transplant surgeons would agree that this period lasts approximately 3 to 5 years on average. At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan recommends the use of certain medications such as Minoxidil and Propecia to prolong the anagen stage which aids hair in producing longer and fuller hair, and GroMD Hair Loss Prevention Shampoo which rapidly helps in increasing the anagen cycle to stop further hair shedding.
What Happens During the Anagen Phase?

  • The hair follicle itself begins to enlarge and grow deeper into the scalp
  • When the hair follicle becomes deep enough, a hair bulb forms at the bottom
  • Connective structures called derma papillae fasten themselves to the bulb of the hair follicle providing nourishment so that the hair can grow
  • The hair shafts begin to grow upwards and outwards from the scalp. If an old hair is still present, the new hair shaft pushes it up and out of the follicle
  • The new hair shaft grows upward through the follicle, past the surface, and emerges as a hair strand

Is the Anagen Phase the Same for Everyone?
The duration of the anagen phase is mainly determined by genetics. For example, those of Asian descent generally have hair that remains in the growth phase for a considerably longer duration than other ethnicities. In some cases, scalp hair remains in this phase as long or short as their body hair. This results in scalp hair not growing more than just a few inches. Other factors that contribute to duration of this phase are environmental toxins and severe stress can also affect the length of your locks.
Is the Anagen Phase the Same for Body Hair as it is the Scalp?
As far as their components to growth are concerned, body hair grows in the same way as scalp hair. In other words – each strand of hair on the body are also going through one of the three phases of development. With that said, body hair remains in the anagen or ‘growing phase’ for a much shorter time frame than scalp hair. Hence why the hair on top of your head grows remarkably longer than on the legs, arms, chest, eyebrows etc.
Hair Growth Myths
The good news is, wearing hats and hair ties will not affect your growth cycle.  However, too much strain or tension on the hair follicles will result in a form of hair loss called Traction Alopecia. Traction Alopecia occurs in many African American’s  due to the culture of how they fashion their hair using hair extensions, weaves, dreadlocks, and cornrows over an extended period of time. Shaving your head is also a common myth and in fact, has no impact on the actual rate of hair growth. In other words, hair will continue to cycle through the three stages of growth regardless, yet wont grow in longer or thicker as a result.

Men: Is Genetic Hair Loss in Your Near Future

If you’re an adult with male-pattern baldness in your close family members, you’re probably quietly asking yourself: Am I going to lose my hair also? If so, when will my hair loss begin? What pattern of hair loss can I expect?
You are certainly justified in asking yourself these questions because male-pattern baldness or hair loss in men is the form of androgenetic alopecia hair loss that occurs in genetically predisposed people. You can thank your parents for this one! The genetic predisposition is hereditary and unfortunately, runs in families.
The fact that androgenetic alopecia is hereditary does not mean:

  1. Every family member will be affected by pattern hair loss
  2. Male-pattern baldness will follow the same pattern in all male relatives
  3. Male-pattern hair loss will occur roughly the same time in all family members it affects

Predictability of hair loss may come in future years once research can identify the specific gene or genes associated with androgenetic alopecia. Although the timing and pattern of this form of hair loss cannot be predicted with utmost accuracy, there are well-documented probabilities to consider. Southern California and Las Vegas Hair Restoration specialist, Dr. Yazdan would examine a patient’s male-pattern hair loss and includes the probabilities in his assessment.
Have you ever heard of conditions “skipping” generations? That goes for genetic hair loss as well. A classic study of pattern hair loss in adult men is called the Norwood-Hamilton classification which presents hair loss in seven categories, with additional sub-categories. This classic study showed 1,000 adult men with male-pattern hair loss. Some of their findings included:

  • All patterns of male-pattern baldness tend to increase with age
  • In types I and II, the patterns have the least cosmetic significance and had highest affects on men aged 18 to 40 years.
As you can see in the photo below, Type I is a minimal recession of hair from the frontal hairline near the temples with Type II essentially being a continuation of Type I.
  • “The Monk’s tonsure” Norwood Hamilton Type III pattern of hair loss becomes more common with age. Type III male pattern hair loss plus recession of hair from the forehead (Type IV and V) also becomes more common as men age.
  • Type VII, also known as the most severe pattern of hair loss, did not show incidence in men under the age of 30 in the Norwood study, and becoming more prevalent in men over the age of 60.

With this in mind, your hair restoration surgeon will need to find out if your hair loss is at the beginning or end of your hair loss, whether or not it is progressive hair loss and if so, how rapidly the progression will take place and the extent. Your family’s history of male-pattern balding may assist in estimating the probabilities for your future hair loss. Dependent upon the stage of hair loss and other deciding factors, you may be an excellent candidate for an FUE or FUT/Strip hair transplant procedure as well as many non-surgical treatments that are also available to you. Finding a skilled and reputable hair transplant physician is paramount when considering any hair restoration procedures.
At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan personally performs each hair transplant in Beverly Hills, Orange County and Las Vegas surgical clinics at his surgical center, utilizing a dedicated team throughout the entire process. He is involved in every aspect of the procedure in order to ensure the best possible ethnic hair restoration outcome and is committed to performing only one surgery per day in order to provide patients with the undivided attention they deserve.

Buyer Beware: Warning of Unlicensed Hair Restoration Services

Buyer Beware: Warning of Unlicensed Hair Restoration Services
Technicians & Assistants Illegally Performing Hair Transplants
22nd, March 2018
For Immediate Release
Las Vegas, Nevada

Currently, we’ve seen an accelerated increase in hair restoration physicians preying on vulnerable patients. Reports have exposed clinics in the Las Vegas region in which physicians+ are bringing in assistants, allowing them to illegally perform surgery under the credentials of licensed doctors. At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Amir Yazdan has had a great deal of patients coming from Las Vegas in hopes to repair their botched hair transplant surgery at a considerably higher rate.
ISHRS (International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery) reports hair restoration surgery is at an all-time high with almost 600,000 surgical hair restoration procedures performed in 2016. This is a 60% increase in just two years.
Patients seeking a hair transplant surgery should take drastic precautions and thoroughly research whether their hair restoration physician is an experienced and reputable surgeon and that all aspects of the surgery – from start to finish, are in fact being performed by the doctor and not a technician.
Warnings from the ISHRS caution individuals that may be buying unsafe, illegal procedures performed by technicians and assistants, not qualified surgeons. In recent years, an alert from the ISHRS shed light on the growing trend or epidemic, rather, of illegal hair restoration practices and the severe ramifications it could hold for unsuspecting consumers.
Patients are being lured by attractive and cost-effective hair transplant surgeries, but then there’s the classic “bait and switch” imitation happening where the actual surgery is illegally being performed. Doctors are stepping in momentarily, only to allow their technicians to hijack nearly the entire surgical operation. Leading to countless risks and complications including infection, severe scarring, cysts, low graft survival rate, failure of regrowth etc. This is a dangersome practice and places patients at serious risk. Unfortunately, this problem isn’t unique to Las Vegas, it is growing and effecting parts of the United States as well.
Although hair transplants are advertised as minimally invasive, would you allow a physician’s unlicensed technician perform your eye surgery? There is no arguing that your hair restoration surgery should be any different. Your hair restoration surgeon should be involved in the entire process and much of the work should never be delegated to technicians as they do not have the skill nor the qualifications to perform the surgery themselves.
“No one should think that even a minor cosmetic surgery isn’t surgery, as medical decisions need to be made constantly during cosmetic procedures and some type of medication is administered to the patient that needs to be monitored and, in some cases, adjusted during surgery,” says the ISHRS in a media release.
More information regarding wariness and safety measures can be found at Modena Hair Restoration and ISHRS.

How Many Hair Transplants Will I Need?

This is a very broad question yet one of importance to many patients we see. Some men and women are satisfied with one hair transplant, and some patients may want more depending on many different variables. For example, a simple hairline restoration – 1 surgery should be sufficient. However, depending on the rate of your receding hairline in the future, you may need a second surgery down the line to fill in the lost native hairs.
The complex answer depends on your hair history and several other factors including the quality (i.e. the surgeon performing your hair transplant) of your procedure and your desired goals, you may be satisfied with the results of your initial hair transplant, not needing to return for additional treatments.

Here we’ll discuss the essential factors contributing to the number of treatments you may or may not need. In general, Dr. Yazdan’s first hair loss treatment session is designed to add density to the patient’s hair, provide coverage to balding areas, and to add a permanent frame to your face.
Depending factors on the number of hair transplant(s) necessary:
The extent of your hair loss – There is a maximum amount of grafts that can be harvested in a single procedure to minimize the risk of scarring and maximize survival rate. ‘Mega Hair Transplant Sessions’ are considered advertisement tactics – which is another term for ‘overharvesting the donor zone’ and should never be advised.
The projected hair loss rate – This can be determined at the time of your consultation once evaluating the scalp and your family history of hair loss.
The amount of donor hair you can spare – Typically your donor hair is harvested from the back of the scalp between the ears considering this area is known to be DHT resistant. (DHT is the #1 leading cause of hair loss) Yet, some men and women have thin or sparse hair in this region. An in-person evaluation can considerably help your surgeon in choosing the appropriate harvesting technique whether it be an FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) or the traditional FUT/Strip (Follicular Unit Transplantation) method.
Donor hair characteristics – Shape, size, and color matter. This includes donor hair thickness, shape (i.e. curly, straight, wavy) and color. For example, African American hair transplants can be much more demanding as the nature of their hair can be denser and tends to curl or twist as it grows under the skin.
Medical considerations – There are many medical conditions and medications that can alter your hair loss and the progression rate. Identifying your hair loss dilemma is first and foremost before proceeding with a hair transplant.
The doctor performing your hair transplant – The quality of your procedure plays a vital role in your hair restoration results. Finding a hair transplant specialist that is well-qualified with an artistic eye can optimize your hair transplant outcome.
At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan can often give the results patients’ desire in a single FUE or Strip hair transplant surgery, with future sessions to follow only if necessary.
It would be best to have a meeting with a skilled hair transplant surgeon that could evaluate your hair loss pattern and come up with a master plan of action that best meets your needs.

Red Flags on Misleading/Unwarranted Information Regarding Hair Restoration Surgery

At Modena Hair Restoration, we understand the importance of hair loss sufferers being informed about hair loss and hair thinning and it’s causes, hair restoration procedures, and scientifically proven therapies to prevent and even stop your scalp from shedding too much hair. But what about precautions and red flags to look out for regarding physicians and the performance of FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT/Strip surgery procedures? With the incline in botched hair restoration surgeries and bad outcomes, we recognize many patients are being misguided by inaccurate or confusing messages and advertisements.
The lists below were developed to inform and protect patients seeking hair restorations surgeries and treatments by interpreting essential components that should raise red flags and should not be taken lightly. This also helps the ISHRS members from using prohibited, inaccurate, perplex and misguided information.
The following phrases are misleading marketing and advertisement tactics by Dermatologists and Hair Restoration physicians deceiving the public:

      • “Scarless surgery”
      • “Non-invasive”
      • “No incision”
      • “Cloning”
      • “No cutting”
      • “No touch”
      • “Pain free”
      • “Eliminates the need for additional surgeries”
      • “Hair multiplication”

The following are a misrepresentation of credentials & violating property rights:
Imprecise Credentials – Incorrectly claiming to be a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS).
Misrepresenting Photographs – Publishing photographs of other doctors’ patients in any form that suggests they are patients of the publishing practice.
Copyright and Trademark Violations – Republishing of the photographs, trade names, logos, publications, and trademarks of another surgeon or practitioner without concession is violating the owner’s copyrights and/or trademarks.

Avoiding Unnatural Results

While the hair transplant industry is booming and we’re seeing more people turning to surgery to correct their hair loss; we need to be advised of the good, the bad, and the ugly! While there are medications designed to treat hair loss, many people are opting for the more permanent and lasting solution to their problem. As time has progressed, surgeons have continued to perfect the technique of unit extraction and transplantation. This has done wonders for all the hair loss sufferers out there in terms of not only restoring their hair – but their self-confidence as well.

In this guide, you’ll learn what you need to know about hair restoration before you embark on a procedure, so you don’t end up with unnatural, noticeable, and downright ugly looking hair – to be frank.
Let’s explore 6 concepts that can potentially make a hairline, and an overall hair transplant result look fake and unnatural.

    • Hairline is too straight (vertical) – This being a cardinal sin. When a hairline loses its ‘micro-rugged’ appearance, the hair pattern can come out looking simply ridiculous and obvious that it’s artificial. You want it to look truly ‘irregular’ (for lack of a better word) upon close inspection. What causes a straight or vertical hairline? This is 100% due to the skill of your physician. Transplanting hairs isn’t as easy as one may think- it takes skill and artistry to angle the site making in a proper manner in order to achieve a natural flow.
    • Unnatural grafting – this one combines a host of technical errors that include too large of grafts (i.e. 4 hair grafts or more) in the front hairline, the angles of the grafts being improperly too high, pitting from placing the grafts too deep, grafts being squeezed down causing compression because the grafts do not fit in the previously made sites.
    • Punch size – in terms of hair restoration, size matters! Punch size refers to the size of the tool used in an FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) in order to harvest grafts from the donor zone. Larger punch tools require larger sites to be made at the recipient area, in this case, your risk of scarring can increase dramatically. Many physicians either don’t feel competent enough to perform a successful hair transplant using smaller punches or they find it easier and quicker to use a larger punch instrument when extracting thousands of grafts, making it less taxing on them, yet, your paying the price with less than satisfying results! You’re risk of scarring goes up, while your grafts success rate goes down. Many physicians label their punch tools ‘A & B’ so you can’t see the size they’re using. Don’t let them fool you! Dr. Yazdan is one of the few hair restoration surgeons out there that are willing and able to get clean, crisp 1-2 hair grafts easily using some of the smallest punches.

  • Shape and position of the hairline is off– when the shape of the hairline (made by the physician) does not match the normal shape of a man or woman’s hairline, it can be a dead giveaway that a hair transplant was done. In addition, if the physician positions the hairline down too far (i.e. the forehead), this can also prove to be an aesthetically unpleasing appearance. Hairlines should almost always rest on the transition from the forehead to the scalp and not any lower. Another common mistake inexperienced physicians tend to make is not evaluating the hairline from the side profile as well. The slope of the hairline should taper off as the hairline goes back and if not done correctly, can be another dead giveaway.
  • Hairline doesn’t match the temples – when the hairline shape and the degree of recession are not matched, your results could look very unnatural. Rebuilding the temple to match the hairline can be an important part of the hair transplant procedure. Forcing the hairline too far anteriorly would mismatch the degree of the temple recession.
  • Hair plugs – let’s not forget to mention the use of hair plugs back in the day. The unsightly appearance of hair plugs… the fundamental problem with the unnatural-appearing hair graft is the graft size. Hair plugs use upwards of 20 or more hairs in a single graft which meant using a punch instrument of 1.5-1.7mm. Nowadays, some of your most experienced and highly qualified surgeons such as Dr. Yazdan use a punch size of 0.7-0.8mm extracting 1-3 hair grafts – smaller punches and smaller grafts spread out make for a much more natural look.

Can a botched hair transplant be fixed?
In these cases, you’ll be happy to know that a botched hair transplant procedure can be fixed. A knowledgeable and experienced surgeon can fix the issue, however its not easy and will end up costing you more in the long run so try to avoid this and learn from other people’s mistakes-not your own!
For such procedure, you’ll want to find a board-certified surgeon who is experienced in hair restoration. This is important, because the process of hair transplant restoration has its own techniques and methods. Unfortunately, there’s no quality control with inexperienced doctors using assistants or technicians to basically run their clinics. You don’t want your head of hair to end up in the hands of a rookie surgeon becoming one of his or her many, guinea pigs! In addition, it requires a special skill in order to work around scarring and other issues associated with a bad or botched hair transplant.
If you do choose to undergo a hair transplant, we recommend you take the time in finding the right surgeon. A hair transplant is a cosmetic procedure, you want to be sure to choose a surgeon with experience and expertise. While cost is important to consider, it’s obvious, you do ‘get what you pay for.’
Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr. Yazdan, adds, “My goal when I perform a hair transplant procedure is to make it almost impossible for another experienced surgeon in my business to recognize the hairline is ‘fake’ even with those of the most trained eyes.”
