How Much Density Will a Hair Transplant Give Me?

hair graft density
Perhaps the most pressing concern for potential hair transplant patients, besides the safety and permanence of their procedure, is the amount of density they can achieve. Most men and women want to return to the density they had when they were in their late teens or early 20s. While this is usually an impossible ideal, an experienced and highly skilled hair transplant surgeon can add a great amount of density to give a strikingly full appearance.
When considering the question of density, the amount a surgeon can transplant is determined by many factors. Including the hair thickness and quality, donor density, age and family history of hair loss. A conservative approach to follicle extraction is always best as one should preserve the donor site for future sessions as one ages.
The color of the hair is also important in contrast to the color of the scalp. The more contrast, the more hair is required to achieve optical density. Dark hair on a Caucasian scalp is going to appear thinner or sparser than lighter color hair such as blonde, gray, or white. The same is true of lighter color hair on an African-American or darker pigmented scalp.  The quality of the hair is also important for determining density. Hair that is curly or wavy appears to achieve more optical density since it camouflages the skin to a greater extent than straight hair. In the 1970s men would perm their thinning hair to reduce the visual contrast between hair and scalp.
The texture of the hair is one of the most important factors influencing the number of grafts required for a specified area of the scalp. Hair shafts can either be very fine, fine, medium, medium-coarse, or coarse. The difference is in the width of the hair; the wider or thicker the hair, the more optical surface density will be visualized. As follicular unit grafts heal, as in any skin graft, the skin contracts or shrinks to its center. The result of this contraction leads to small gaps between each graft which can be improved during a second surgery to fill in these spaces.
Techniques for density creation vary from surgeon to surgeon. At Modena Hair Institute, Dr. Yazdan utilizes an extremely fine 0.7mm punch and implantation technique that allows for density optimization and a natural looking hairline. This not only reduces the risk for scarring, but reduces the risk of shock loss in surrounding follicles.

Is Hair Transplant Surgery Safe and Effective?

safety of hair transplantion
In short, yes. Hair transplant surgeries are generally safe as long as you select the right clinic and doctor to perform your surgery. The safety of hair transplant surgery comes down to experience, specialization and artistic ability.

Many clinics sell clients on grandiose expertise and then have assistant technicians perform most or all of the surgery, instead of the head surgeon. Their pseudo-rationale is that because they are overbooked and the surgeon doesn’t have the time to give each patient his or her full undivided attention, that medical mediocrity is somehow acceptable. Worse still, some doctors are non-hair restoration specialists but advertise total surgical competence in the field.

At Modena Hair Institute in Newport Beach, Dr. Yazdan does all of his own surgeries. He is involved in every step of the process from pre-op diagnosis to post-op maintenance and care. He only books one surgery per day so that he can make sure every single patient gets the best result possible.

An FUE surgery, or follicular unit extraction, involves grafts being punched out of a donor site and transplanted into the recipient site. Dr. Yazdan commands each punch for an FUE procedure and the punch size is a great deal smaller than most clinics. He uses a razor thin 0.7 or 0.8 mm punch size, whereas other practices generally use a 1.2 mm punch size. Larger punches create more scarring and sometimes damage the surrounding healthy hair.

Hair growth is not always in a straight line and the follicles are not always found growing straight back in the scalp. An experienced doctor will be able to look at the hair and tell the direction and the angle in which the hair is growing. This is paramount when doing the punches for an FUE surgery. Instead of punching a straight hole and cutting right through an angled follicle, they can identify and adjust to the hair growth. Thus, there are lower transection rates and higher yields.

Creating a recipient site for the new follicle to be inserted entails selecting an area where hair needs to be placed and then outlining that area. The doctor makes small incisions in the recipient site, where the grafts will be placed. The graft size must match the incision size perfectly. If the recipient sites are too large the grafts will easily fall out. Conversely, if the recipient sites are too small, the grafts will not fit inside.

Dr. Yazdan also does not cut or split grafts to increase graft number, thereby reducing the total cost of the procedure. Cutting and splitting grafts is needlessly expensive and can lead to decreased survival of the transplanted hair. A follicle could easily be cut during this process as well as dried out. Follicles are extremely sensitive, so the less they are manipulated the better.

A strong medical team is always needed and the surgical team selected by Dr. Yazdan has been with him for nine years. Yazdan and his team continually refine their method and optimize safety and effectiveness

The safety of FUE transplant procedures, therefore, heavily depends on the experience and expertise of the guiding physician, their operating method, and the nature of their instrumentation. Don’t risk your scalp – do thorough research and stick with masters in the field of hair transplantation.

Hair Transplants Can Change Lives – As Long as You Find a Credible Surgeon

Cosmetic procedures have always been a rather private and personal affair. Yet some cosmetic procedures are much more well known and publicly acknowledged than others. Rhinoplasty, rhytidectomy (wrinkle treatment) and breast augmentation are some the most well known; while hair transplantation, for many, appears mysterious and suspicious.
The truth is however, that hair transplantation – as a surgical science and cosmetic art – has made incredible advancements over the last two decades. Follicular unit extraction, or FUE, in particular, has progressed to be able to produce aesthetically flawless and natural looking results. Our patients have arrived at our doorstep with devastated hairlines only to leave with restored confidence and a new sense of self. Empowering and life-changing results are common and very much possible.
These hair restoration results are so consistently successful that even mega sports star Cristiano Ronaldo has opened his own clinic. According to popular reports, “the clinic will employ 150 people and perform an average of 18 transplants each day, ranging from services such as beard and eyebrows treatment. His girlfriend Georgina is also set to become one of the clinic’s managers.”
One cannot help but suspect that quantity is being prioritized over quality.
Moreover, such exceptional results are only possible when executed by an ethical, patient-focused, experienced and expert hair transplant surgeon. Yet a slew of non-specialist clinics have opportunistically sought to seize a growing share of the market.
What Problems Can Arise from Non-Specialist Clinics?
Unnatural looking results. As our opening picture captures, non-specialty clinics will almost always tend towards being profit-centered. This means that ‘getting the job done’ will often take priority over ‘getting the job done right‘. With such an emphasis on quantity and financial take-away, clinics run by technicians will consistently fail to produce a natural-looking hairline, one that takes into account the myriad idiosyncrasies of the patient.
Also, not everyone experiencing hair loss is a proper candidate for a hair transplant. An ethical clinic run by an experienced hair restoration doctor knows that transplantation is only part of the story, and a truly patient-focused ethos will demand that other options and hair restoration programs be considered before hair transplantation is recommended.
Unlike other common medical issues, hair loss is not a static ailment that can be treated and cured in one fell swoop. It is a progressive and life-long phenomenon that requires diligent oversight and consistent monitoring.
For this reason, all of our patients at Modena Hair Institute are provided a tailored hair loss prevention plan. One which takes into account their medical history, age, skin type, hair type and other essential variables.
At our hair restoration clinics in Orange County, Beverly Hills and Las Vegas, we prioritize long term hair restoration results over quick fix procedures. We develop life-long relationships with our patients, many of whom return for advice and friendly consultation once a year, because we care about real life-changing results.
Finding a Credible Hair Transplant Surgeon.
According to the American Hair Loss Association, hair restoration and hair transplantation have no approved medical specialty board sanctioned by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).
One of the only institutions which provides elite vetting and credentialing in the field of hair transplantation is the The International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons (IAHRS).
As the only IAHRS member in the Orange County and Las Vegas area, Dr. Amir Yazdan understands that acceptance into the society demands practitioners meet high ethical standards, own decades-long experience and a visceral commitment to the art and science of hair transplantation.

Stress and Hair Loss: How to Treat Telogen Effluvium

There is strong research linking stress and hair loss. Telogen effluvium, a form of temporary hair loss characterized by diffuse thinning of the hair often caused by stress, disrupts your three natural hair growth patterns – anagen, catagen, telogen.
There seems to be more and more stress on men and women these days, and these growing levels of anxiety are causing more people to seek treatment for their hair loss.
So how exactly does stress cause hair loss? Fortunately, if you are only experiencing low levels of stress, you are not going to lose your hair because of it. Hair loss caused by stress comes from a larger stressful experience or incident.
There is also not just one factor of why stress can cause hair loss, but is actually a combination or several factors. When you are under a great deal of stress, your body produces more adrenaline and any excess adrenaline that your body does not use is converted into cholesterol. When you have raised levels of cholesterol, it increases your level of testosterone. For people with a sensitivity to testosterone, it can negatively impact their hair follicles.
Your immune system can suffer if you are feeling stress or anxiety, and this makes you more susceptible to getting an illness or an infection. This can impact your hair’s growth cycle, since the average person has 90% of their hair in the growing cycle, which will usually last a few years before it goes into a resting stage and then falls out. On average, people lose 100 hairs each day, but if your hair’s growing cycle is disrupted, it can cause more hairs than usual to go into the resting phase, and can also cause a lot of hair to fall out all at once.
This will usually happen around two months after a stressful event or an illness. Many women experience mild hair loss following pregnancy. Most people who suffer from this type of hair loss only experience temporary hair loss and their hair will usually resume its normal growth cycle once they alleviate the cause of their stress. Once you have gotten rid of your stress, you should notice significant improvements in your overall health, in addition to your hair growth.
If you have already started to notice thinning hair or bald spots, if you continue to look at your hair in the mirror to check if it has gotten worse, you will only be adding to your stress. There are excellent hair loss treatments available at Modena Hair Institute that can restore your confidence, such as follicular unit extraction (FUE) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
PRP works by stimulating newly implanted or inactive hair follicles into an active growth phase. Modena Hair Institute in Orange County, Las Vegas and Beverly Hills offers a highly advanced version of PRP therapy that is enhanced with a one-of-a-kind propriety protein called Acell. This procedure can stop hair thinning and increase hair count, thickness, and growth speed.
With FUE transplant surgery, Dr. Amir Yazdan removes donor hair follicles from the sides and back of the scalp and relocates them on the top of the scalp where the hair loss has occurred. Dr. Yazdan uses micro-incisions to create sites to place each individual follicular unit, which will grow into a natural, undetectable pattern over the next year.

Eyebrow Enhancement and Restoration

Eyebrows are perhaps the most defining feature on a person’s face. The shape of an eyebrow conveys emotion, feeling and attitude. If you have eyebrows that aren’t as thick or defined as you’d like, then eyebrow restoration may be the perfect option to consider.
At Modena Hair Institute, Dr. Amir Yazdan implements state-of-the-art surgical techniques to restore and enhance not just hair and beard imperfections, but eyebrow flaws as well. Surgical eyebrow restoration is a simple, minimally invasive procedure in which Dr. Yazdan harvests healthy, balding resistant hair follicles from the back of the scalp, chest or back area and plants them in the eyebrows, in the areas of need. The surgery can be used for enhancing existing sparse eyebrow or for recreating eyebrows in individuals who have lost their brows due to trauma, burn or accident.

Eyebrow hair loss is rare, but eyebrows with lackluster volume and faulty shape are all too common. There are many factors which can contribute to eyebrow imperfections. Over-plucking, medication, eczema, alopecia areata, and lupus are some common triggers of eyebrow hair loss. Excessive plucking is probably the most common cause of eyebrow hair loss and this is why most of the eyebrow hair transplant candidates are females. But many men over the last few years have turned to Modena Hair Institute for eyebrow restoration as well.
Many hair restoration clinics, even many good ones, are concerned only with selling hair transplants; we are about the person behind the hair transplant. At Modena we take just as much care considering the person’s aesthetics and proportion as we do the actual hair surgery itself.

Hair Transplant or Micropigmentation: Which is Right for Me?

Male pattern baldness
When faced with a choice such as whether to have a full hair transplant or to opt for scalp micropigmentation (SMP) instead, it can take a while to decide. And that’s probably a good thing. Both of these procedures are serious and can take time to recover from, and should not be entered into lightly. It takes time and effort to locate an expert hair restoration practitioner and assess his or her strengths and weaknesses.
Therefore, weighing up the pros and cons of each and taking time to do so can make the decision easier and more informed at the same time.  The best option of the two procedures for you will depend on what you want as the end result – each one will (or can) look very different.
Scalp micro pigmentation is the process of tattooing ink into and onto the scalp in order to give the illusion of a shaved head rather than the reality of a bald one. No hair is required, and so for those who are entirely bald it is a great solution. However, the SMP will not feel like real hair, and it won’t grow either. Due to this, the only style available is that of a shaved head, and if you do have remaining hair you will need to keep this shaved as well so that the look is complete. SMP is useful for those who have lost hair in patches, as it can be used as a ‘filler’.
A hair transplant is a more complicated, more serious procedure. This is for men and women who are experiencing mild to severe hair loss and hairline recession. A successful hair transplant will leave you with a new hairline made up of your own actual hairs. There are no artificial tattoos, plugs or wigs involved. Strong and healthy hair is taken – usually from the back and sides of the head – and implanted into the thinning region of the scalp.
However, the end result will be that of a full head of real hair. This is achieved by using donor hair from elsewhere on the patient’s scalp and moving it to the place where hair is missing. This is therefore only possible if there is hair left on the scalp – a hair transplant cannot be achieved on someone who is completely bald. The hair created in a hair transplant should, all being well, continue to grow, and therefore the styles that can be created are much more varied than with SMP.

The Bradley Cooper Effect: Beard Transplants in 2018

bradley-cooper-beard
A nationwide survey in 2017 asked women how much facial hair, if any, looked best on a man. The majority of women answered that heavy stubble was the most attractive and light-stubble or clean-shaven was comparatively less attractive.
Of course sex appeal is not the only motive behind growing out a nice, clean and full beard – a man’s beard gives off many masculine and positive vibes. Confidence. Wisdom. Virility. Courage. Strength. The bottom line is that nothing quite says ‘I’m a man’ like a beard.
Yet up to 45 percent of men report being unable to grow out a full and even beard. If you’re having trouble growing a beard, or if your beard is not as full and as lush as you’d like, it can be frustrating. Patchy or uneven beards are an extremely common problem because the cheek areas have considerably weaker blood flow than the area of the upper lip and chin, causing less nutrients and beard-growth hormones to stimulate the region over time.
While some men try hair growth serums, minoxidil or other creams to counteract facial hair loss, more and more men are turning to the easier, more robust and more permanent option of facial hair transplants.
A facial hair transplant is a minor and minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that takes hair from the back of the head and transplants it into the bald or patchy areas of the beard.
Dr. Amir Yazdan, head surgeon at Modena Hair Institute in Newport Beach, California, said he has seen a 20 per cent increase in the number of procedures over the last three years as beards have become more fashionable.
A facial hair transplant is a great option for men who seek a thicker and fuller beard because a client can fill in as much or as little as is needed. Moreover, the transplanted hair can be trimmed, shaved, and groomed just as you would other facial hair. The procedure is safe, fast and extremely effective – just make sure to partner with a proper hair restoration surgeon. More on that below.
A Note of Caution
While facial hair transplants can be an extremely effective and positive experience, partnering with a well-qualified and tenured hair restoration surgeon is very important. The difference between an expertly trained and experienced hair restoration surgeon and one with little expertise and experience will mean the difference between success and failure. Top doctors know well the horror stories of patients who are sold a cheap and sweet-sounding procedure, only to have their facial hair fall off or turn inflamed later.
An experienced surgeon will be tactful in his or her artistry when positioning and directing the transplanted hairs to fit your natural hair growth pattern. When doing research to find the right surgeon, make sure to ask these key questions:

  • Do you specialize in hair transplant surgery?
  • How many years of specialized experience do you have performing FUE and FUT surgeries?
  • How much actual work is done by you during the hair transplanting process?
  • Are you certified by the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgeons?

As you continue on your hair restoration journey, know what to look for and what questions to ask. Your hair, your appearance and your confidence deserve to be in the most capable of surgical hands.

The Truth Behind Eyebrow Transplants

eyebrow transplant
“I felt completely naked without my penciled brows,” explains Ashley Wilkins, “which made life very difficult. I tried brow-growth serums, Rogaine, hair pills — anything I could think of. Nothing worked. I finally decided that getting a brow transplant was the solution for me.”
Growing up with wiry, loose or bushy looking eye brows causes many men and women to either thread them into shape, get them waxed, or constantly pluck and repluck them. All of this can cause tissue damage and unwanted friction.
Others like Ashley tried all of the above and even went further into over-the-counter products and add-ons. But these gimmicky products and services often proved to be just that – gimmicky. They aren’t permanent and require life-long corrections – like a college English paper from hell that never stops needing revision.
Doesn’t it make more sense to have one small procedure and settle the matter for good?
How does an eyebrow transplant work? The procedure involves the individual placement of single hairs in the natural growth pattern of your previous eyebrow hair. You simply create a stencil for your ideal eyebrows, petite or full, luscious or curvy, and the doctor fills out the hair pattern using your naturally growing hairs! The meticulous placement of as many as several hundred hairs can restore eyebrows to their most natural appearance. As seen below.

“I received a lot of criticism when I first told friends and family I was going to have eyebrow hair transplants,” Ashley explains. “No one understood — because their brows were all fully intact. Now, with all said and done, the friends who once judged me say I look amazing. They’ve completely changed their minds about the whole thing. I have never regretted my decision to undergo the surgery.”
“And, eyebrow hair transplants aren’t just for the over-plucked: People who suffer from scars, naturally sparse hair growth, or misshapen brows can all benefit. The process sounds daunting, but it goes by faster than you can imagine — and I promise you will never look back. I haven’t.”

A Short Guide to Hair Loss for Men in Their 20s

If you’re in your 20s and your hairline is starting to recede, the most likely culprit is something called androgenic alopecia, better known as male pattern baldness. But don’t panic. You are not alone! Male pattern baldness is the most common cause of hair loss and almost 25% of men start seeing symptoms in their 20s.
The bad news is that male pattern baldness is a genetic condition. There is nothing you did to cause it. It’s in your genes. Your family history also affects the age when you begin to lose your hair, how fast you lose hair and, ultimately, the extent of your baldness.
The good news is there have been extensive medical advancements to slow, stop and even reverse the progression of hair loss in certain men. So, if you notice your hair falling out or the early stages of a receding hairline, what should you do?
First things first, we recommend sitting down with a (board certified) hair restoration specialist who can properly evaluate your hair shedding or hair loss situation, based on factors like your medical profile, hair loss condition, and stage of shedding. Finding a true expert and specialist of the craft can be tricky, so check out our guide to finding the right one for you.

PRP Procedure at Modena Hair Institute

The initial consultation will be to see how your hairline and hair density has changed and will change in the next few years. Forecasting how your receding hairline or shedding patterns change will grant you and the physician a better understanding of the effectiveness of different hair restoration treatments, be they surgical or otherwise.
The key to slowing hair loss in your 20s is early intervention. Given the relatively young age of the client, board-certified physician, Dr. Amir Yazdan, may recommend PRP injections mixed with stem cells, alongside a multifaceted program to treat hair thinning and loss. PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy is a breakthrough minimally invasive procedure that has been known to stimulate cell regrowth, slow hair shedding, and aid during the hair restoration process. Modena Hair Institute’s highly advanced version of PRP therapy includes fat derived stem cells which aggressively stimulates hair growth cycles, and helps with hair loss by increasing hair count, thickness, and growth speed.
Moreover, combining over-the-counter minoxidil treatments (Rogaine) with GroMD’s Follicle Activator Spray has shown remarkable results in hair regrowth and density.

The Importance of Expert Design in a Hair Transplant

Dr. Amir Yazdan consulting Coutness Vaugn on The Doctors TV Show

It would not be an exaggeration to say that the success of a hair transplant procedure depends essentially on the artistic ability of the operating physician. By artistic ability we mean a careful eye married to a flawless surgical hand. Like a world-renowned painter or sculptor, a world-renowned hair restoration surgeon has a picturesque vision, fine instrumentation, and a masterful guiding hand.
Hair transplantation is an intensely delicate, laborious, and intricate affair, and as with any complex cosmetic procedure, transplantation of hair follicles is as much an exercise in aesthetic sense and design capability as it is in surgical skill.
Why highlight and stress the design aspect of hair transplantation? Because extraction of the hair follicles is only a small part of the job. The truly difficult part of the procedure – the part that distinguishes masters from merely competent practitioners – comes when the physician must assess hairline shape, angling, grouping design, and other key elements to finally design a totally dense and natural looking hairline.
The results from FUE and FUT hair transplantation procedures performed by board-certified physician Dr. Amir Yazdan always mimics the patient’s original hair growth pattern and natural hairline structure.
Dr. Yazdan’s Unique FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) Method:

  • Micro incisions 0.8mm (Most clinics use 1.2mm)
  • Accurate Depth Control
  • Graft Survival Rate up to 99%
  • Gentle Graft Extraction
  • Recipient sites created with natural hair line design by Dr. Yazdan

It’s paramount to keep in mind that hair restoration is a medical ‘art’. Medical art combines medical knowledge, mastery of advanced surgical skills, as well as a keen eye enabling the accurate reproduction of what occurs naturally. Many consumers falsely assume that artistic ability is simply a given resulting from education and practice of established surgical techniques. Art and surgery are separate skills, and this must be taken into consideration when evaluating a doctor for your hair restoration surgery.
As you continue on your hair transplant journey, know what to look for and what questions to ask. Your hair, your appearance and your confidence deserve to be in the most capable of surgical hands.

The Difference of Modena Hair Institute and the Different It Makes

Progressive Edge
Dr. Amir Yazdan takes personal pride in providing courteous and high-quality professional treatment for all his patients’ hair care needs. A zealous advocate of patient safety and hair restoration research, Dr. Yazdan combines advanced scientific knowledge with over a decade of critical experience to contrive innovative treatments options for his patients. He spends most of his time looking for better ways to treat hair loss. Dr. Yazdan is an internationally renowned hair transplant surgeon, expert guest on Dr. Phil and The Doctors, creator of the GroMD hair restoration product line, and ISHRS member. He fuses the best of today’s medical approaches to give you superior care and a better, more enhanced you.
Personal Commitment
Purposeful and personal attention over every surgery is Modena Hair Institute’s way of ensuring total patient comfort, happiness, and peace of mind. Apart from artistic precision and surgical mastery, Dr. Yazdan takes a complete-oversight approach to patient consultation, pre-operative, operative, and post-operative care. He is committed to helping each patient determine what solution best fits his or her individual situation, whether through hair restoration products or surgical solutions. At many hair restoration clinics, it’s anonymous technicians and assistants who will do most of the actual extraction and transplanting work. This effectively means that patients act as guinea pigs for trainees who are still learning all the particular and complex aspects of the hair restoration craft.
Following Nature
The ultimate end and aim of hair transplant work is a natural looking hairline. When it comes to graft placement, Dr. Yazdan follows the rules of nature. There are ‘assembly line’ clinics and physicians who fall short of the personalized gold standard of hair restoration treatment and perform FUE and FUT procedures without a proper understanding of growth pattern, style, flexibility, and general look of a patient’s hair. We have potential patients who worry about their hair transplant looking ‘pluggy’ or fake (which can and will happen at inexperienced clinics!), but this will never happen at Modena because we follow nature’s flow pattern. A ‘pluggy’ look is the result of a surgeon who (guess what) uses plugs! Such an incapable and inexperienced surgeon did not use naturally occurring follicular units, and so the results were unsurprisingly bad. What’s important is that patients go to a doctor who specializes exclusively in follicular unit transplantation, one who has the knowledge, experience, and artistic detail necessary to produce a natural-looking hairline. Lastly, it’s paramount to keep in mind that hair restoration is a medical ‘art.’ Medical art combines medical knowledge, mastery of advanced surgical skills and techniques as well as a keen eye enabling the accurate reproduction of what occurs naturally. Mere educational or surgical competence is only half the story, you need artistic talent and capability as well.
As you continue on your hair transplant journey, know what to look for and what questions to ask. Your hair, your appearance and your confidence deserve to be in the most capable of surgical hands.

How Many FUE Grafts Do I Need For My Hair Transplant Surgery?

This is a very common question asked by potential hair transplant patients, but one which is impossible to answer without a physician’s direct assessment of the situation. A viable candidate for an FUE procedure may need only 900 grafts transplanted while another may need 3,500.
FUE gratfs
As you can see from the above graphic, patient number three many only need 1,000 grafts, while patient number five will need a few thousand.
Various factors influence the number of grafts to be transplanted.

  • The stage of hair loss the patient currently faces
  • The quality of the donor area
  • Follicle strength
  • The number of follicles that can be received from the donor area
  • The aesthetic goals of the patient
  • The physiology and medical history of the patient

During a first consultation, the physician will evaluate the patient’s scalp and consider the aforementioned factors and develop an estimated graft count for surgery. While the cost of the surgery is not directly correlated to the graft count, the number of grafts to be transplanted does significantly determine overall price.
An additional factor to keep in mind for inquisitive patients is that hair goals differ from patient to patient. What makes one patient happy may not make another patient happy. These aesthetic goals play a pivotal role in the amount of grafts needed. Does the patient desire a bell curve design or a round design? These and other crucial questions play a role in graft count.
A veteran physician will work with the patient to produce a properly designed hairline that will establish a suitable frame to the face and create a frame as well for the remainder of the hair transplant work. The physician and the patient must contemplate how that hairline will properly fit a person’s facial features, stage of hair loss, and shape of the existing temple hairline.
Modena Hair Institute’s own board-certified physician, Dr. Amir Yazdan, has specialized in this bespoke style of FUT and FUE transplantation for nearly a decade.

Dr. Yazdan Attends 2018 Annual ISHRS Conference in Los Angeles

ISHRS hosts 26th World Congress in Hollywood, Calif., Oct. 10-14, 2018
2018 marks another great year in medical and hair restoration research. This year we Southern Californians were fortunate enough to have the largest and most prestigious hair restoration conference take place in our own backyard.
With the theme “When Award Winning Hair Transplant Surgeons Meet”, the 26th World Congress of the ISHRS met at Loews Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles on October 10-14, 2018 boasting an exceptional lineup of international speakers and educational offerings.
The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) is a global non-profit medical association where the world’s leading experts in treating hair loss gather to share their most up to date research, techniques, and diagnostic approaches.
Long standing ISHRS member and board-certified physician, Dr. Amir Yazdan of Modena Hair Institute, attended this year’s conference both to share his innovations in follicular unit extraction (FUE) and to keep up with all important advancements in the field.
The conference included many internationally recognized keynote speakers covering an array of topics including: hair biology, innovative diagnostic approaches, novel surgical techniques, body hair transplantation, and more.

One particular educational program, however, caught the attention of nearly all the distinguished attendees, namely, the Beware of the Hair Transplant Black Market session.
This educational session dives into the portentous growth of cheap, inexperienced, and unethical hair care clinics across America and the globe. Unspecialized physicians and technical operators who have no business even approaching the hairlines or scalp of a balding or shedding patient, are emboldened by the promise of easy money and a new source of revenue. They prop up an eloquent sales campaign or website and sell consumers a trap.
Consumers experiencing hair loss or pattern baldness will tragically rush into whatever hair restoration clinic sounds most appealing or which drives the best bargain. Unbeknownst to them, these so-called hair restoration ‘specialists’ either have little experience or use automated machines that lack precision and artistic execution. This effectively means that patients act as guinea pigs for trainees who are operating machines that can barely execute a decent job. Operations of the aforementioned kind often result in gross, botched, or unnatural-looking hairlines.

We here at Modena Hair Institute have been especially vocal about this rather sinister trend of crooked hair clinics and inexperienced physicians selling consumers cheap and false promises. Check out our chronicling of this hair transplant black market, and the proven ways in which to avoid it:

Read This Before You Have a Hair Transplant

Read before you get a hair transplant
We have more hair transplant clinics today in 2018 than we have ever had before. Yet, modern hair transplant patients are receiving some of the worst results the industry has ever seen. We don’t need to remind you that quantity does not entail quality. In this article we will explore why, with the great proliferation of hair restoration clinics across the nation and the world, has there been a rise in botched jobs and damaged hairlines.
As hair transplants and hair restoration practices grow in popularity and accessibility there has sprung up a dangerous class of hair transplant practitioners and technicians. For many this comes as a shock, that in 2018, with all of the scientific and technological advancements taking place in medical care, the hair transplant industry can be so infested with shady malpractice.
For one thing, as witnessed with pharmaceutical and other major industries, innovation and advancement of product inevitably means there will be those trying sell knockoffs and cheap substitutes.
This dangerous and greedy class of hair technicians seek to capitalize on a service so many people genuinely desire and need. Using flowery marketing tactics and savvy sales campaigns, these inexperienced and unskilled physicians lure in customers for cheap and faulty operations. Many crooked hair transplant clinics will sucker clients in with seductive-looking technology and highly scientific sounding brochures. An obvious fallacy, as we all know that having the best stereoscopic dissecting microscope or other fancy instrumentation does not confer ability or experience on the operating physician or technician. Yet most people often cannot help wanting to take advantage of a seemingly good deal and are thus caught in the trap.
British celebrity and MTV star, Kyle Christie, notoriously underwent an embarrassing and cosmetically gross hair transplant. A devastated but hopeful Christie now speaks about the importance of finding a proper physician who is ethically and technically pure.

Media personality, Yousef Erakat (stage name Fousey), who began experiencing male pattern baldness in his early 20s sought to recover his healthy hair look with scalp micropigmentation (SMP), but also suffered at the hands of an inexperienced and unethical clinic. After his scalp procedure, Yousef rushed to book another appointment at a different clinic to salvage what had been needlessly lost. In an interview following the incident Yousef’s words are an urgent reminder: “I made an appointment [but] I didn’t do any research, I didn’t check any reviews, I didn’t think about it.”

This abuse of hair restoration promises has crushed the spirit and confidence of so many people that it is causing industry outrage. The emotional toll and psychological repercussions of inexperienced and faulty hair transplant work has caused many men (and women) to spiral into a constant battle of obsessive perfectionism and low self-esteem.
Kyle Christie and Yousef Erakat suffered under bad clinics residing in America and the UK, but many who seek a cheaper alternative overseas are even more likely to experience dissatisfaction. Many individuals have been seduced by low prices and sweet promises by foreign hair transplant clinics as well: Turkey Hair Transplant Gone Wrong.
Perhaps most importantly, however, these surgical abuses and empty promises seriously impact and undermine the brilliant hair transplant work performed by ethical and leading hair care physicians.
The hallmarks of a bad hair transplant procedure are always coarse, scarred, uneven, and fake looking hair. The hallmarks of a good hair transplant, however, are much harder to spot, because the best physicians will give clients the most natural-looking hair possible. A seasoned hair transplant surgeon will consistently produce ultra-refined, dense, and natural looking hairlines. Expert clinics and expert physicians are rare, but they’re worth the research to find.
The best hair transplant doctors will also work tirelessly over many years to perfect their FUE and FUT method. Board certified physician Dr. Amir Yazdan, for example, developed his own propriety FUE extraction method and personalized set of instruments over the course of a decade. With every operation he continually refined and improved his method in order to provide patients with the greatest possible aesthetic outcome.

Dr. Yazdan also oversees the entire hair transplant procedure to guarantee proper graft orientation, prevent hair graft loss, and ensure natural hair grouping design. Dr. Yazdan, like other top doctors in the industry, adamantly promote the ‘doctor only’ model of hair transplantation, and stress the importance of expert oversight from start to finish and even during post op.
True veteran hair transplant doctors will carefully assesses hair density, hair angle variance, hairline shape, hair grouping design, and other key elements in order to determine exact graft selection and placement sites.
Luckily, there are strong ways of separating the experts from the imitators. Highly reputable medical forums and review boards such as realself.com are indispensable.

Hair Loss in Women

Hair loss in women
Hair loss and hair shedding in women is a much more common phenomenon than public discourse on the issue lets on. Recent research tells us that approximately twenty-five million women suffer from hair loss in the United States alone. Even more striking, about 40% of women will display some degree of female pattern hair loss by the time they reach age 50. The National Institute of Health reports:
“Fewer than 45% of women go through life with a full head of hair. Female pattern hair loss is the commonest cause of hair loss in women and prevalence increases with advancing age.”
Happily, hair loss prevention and treatment options have greatly grown in popularity, safety, and effectiveness.
There are potentially many causes behind hair loss in women – some of the most common include stress, unhealthy lifestyle choices and consistent usage of chemical sprays and gels. While the aforementioned causes can be found among men as well, certain female-only causes of hair loss may be associated with pregnancy, thyroid disorders and anemia.
Hair loss in women can be devastating for their self-esteem and emotional well-being. The best reaction to sudden or gradual hair loss is not to panic but to start down the road of effective research and proactive inquiry. Ask yourself: have there been any recent changes to my lifestyle that may be having an adverse effect on my hair? Has my diet changed, or perhaps my physical fitness regimen? Diet and exercise are often correlated with hair loss and so careful monitoring of both are important.
Beyond simple self-help methods, it’s highly advisable to visit a local (or non-local) hair loss specialist, as this is the strongest option for those who are unsure about the origin of their female pattern hair loss (also known as androgenetic alopecia), and are wanting expert diagnosis, treatment and medical advice.
A hair restoration physician will help you navigate treatment options and discover whether you suffer from chronic hair shedding exclusively or if there are a mixture of hormonal and genetic factors at play. This is important, because the nature of your physiology and hair loss pattern will determine what kind of treatment you need and to what extent. Beware, however, of inexperienced or poor practitioners, as small diagnostic errors may result in botched projects if one is not careful.
Treating Female Hair Loss
Based on one’s medical diagnosis and consultation with a hair restoration specialist, medical management of hair loss or transplant surgery will be the solution, yet sometimes both are advised. Board certified physician and hair loss specialist, Dr. Amir Yazdan, for example, recommends over-the-counter minoxidil (Rogaine) to be applied in tandem with groMD shampoo and conditioner to patients experiencing thinning of hair.
More drastic hair loss cases where women exhibit balding or a gap widening on the topmost part of their scalp may require more advanced hair restoration treatments such as an FUE or FUT hair transplant. If a hair transplant is chosen as the best treatment option, it is the expert opinion of Dr. Yazdan and others in the know to recommend the FUT method above that of the FUE, because of visibility concerns and graft volume desires.
Check out this easy video presentation, where Dr. Yazdan explains the persuasive advantages of the FUT procedure:

Are FUE Hair Transplants Permanent?

FUE hair transplant permanent
Permanent Hair Loss Does Not Need to Be Permanent
Before diving into how you can make your hair loss procedure maximally effective, let us say emphatically at the outset that FUE hair transplants are virtually permanent and one of the most successful hair loss procedures available. If you’ve landed on this page you know that the follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure can give you back that thick head of hair you love and restore your native confidence.
By removing hair follicles one by one from the back of the scalp, where hair is generally the most durable, and then implanting them into thinning or balding areas of the head, an FUE hair transplant can produce an aesthetically flawless and rejuvenated hairline. One of the reasons for the tenacity and permanence of the extracted follicles is that the transplanted grafts are unaffected by DHT – an androgen and the major culprit behind hair loss. In other words, the hair follicles that are extracted and placed into the new site will retain their original properties. This principle of ‘donor dominance’ means that your new hair will be strong, healthy, and shed no more!
The Importance of Finding a Skilled Physician
A successful FUE transplant procedure involves more than simply and robotically extracting and transplanting grafts. To obtain a permanent and tenacious new hairline you need a highly experienced and methodically precise hair transplant doctor who operates with artistic exactness. Pay attention to the technique and device used by the operating physician, as many hair restoration clinics will produce low density and unnatural looking hairlines because of clunky hardware and inexperienced doctors.
An experienced hair transplant physician – someone who specialized exclusively in hair restoration and transplantation – will take into account crucial biographical and physiological details. Board certified physician, Dr. Amir Yazdan, for example, carefully assesses hair density, hair angle variance, hairline shape, hair grouping design, and other elements in order to determine exact graft selection and placement sites. A specialist in the craft, Dr. Yazdan has also developed his own propriety FUE extraction method and personalized set of instruments.
An FUE procedure, if executed by an experienced and skilled physician, delivers long-lasting and aesthetically satisfying results.
The Importance of Post-Op Care
Finally, for your FUE procedure to be maximally effective, and to curb existing hair loss patterns, it’s important to accompany your surgery with medical management of hair loss. Hair transplants by themselves are a strong hair loss option, but are made even stronger when paired with a correct hair loss treatment plan.

Choosing the Right FUE Hair Transplant Surgeon

Male pattern baldness
The internet is an unparalleled resource for checking surgical reputations and verifying medical truth claims. Medical practices the world over have recognized this shift in patient knowledge capabilities and sought to give the public unfiltered access to their purported talents, surgical history, and client testimony through reputable online forums.
One of the most popular and reputable online forums used by patients and cosmetic practitioners worldwide is the website RealSelf. Listed as one of the top doctors on realself.com, board-certified physician Dr. Amir Yazdan, stresses the importance of patient-physician research when he says: “online consumer review forums like RealSelf are a quick and excellent way for patients to verify a physician’s truth claims. Don’t be seduced by doctors who label themselves as ‘experts’, ‘visionaries’, or ‘leaders in their field’, make sure to check their customer reviews, Q&As, transplant success rate, and most of all, whether they specialize exclusively in hair transplant procedures.”
Realself top doctor
Sites like RealSelf allows users to ask doctors questions, write treatment reviews, and share photos of their experiences.
Finding the best FUE hair transplant surgeon in your area (although sometimes a non-local option will serve you much better) really comes down to effectively researching the hair restoration practice and asking critically relevant questions concerning their procedure, method, and history. A fuller list of questions to ask your hair transplant physician will follow.
At many hair restoration clinics, it’s the technicians or physicians’ assistants who will do most of the actual extraction and transplanting work. This effectively means that patients act as guinea pigs for trainees who are still learning all the particular and complex aspects of the hair restoration craft. Operations of the aforementioned kind often result in aesthetically imperfect, botched, or unnatural-looking hairlines.

Asking critically relevant questions of the different hair restoration practices you survey is the first major step towards weeding out superficial offers. The key questions to ask a hair restoration surgeon are:

  • Do you specialize in hair transplant surgery?
  • How many years of specialized experience do you have performing FUE and FUT surgeries?
  • How much actual work is done by you during the hair transplanting process?
  • Are you certified by the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgeons?

Choosing the right hair transplant surgeon comes down to feeling safe and secure with a specialist who has outlined and executed your surgical design thousands of times. Unique assessment of every patient and total oversight during the entire procedure are also imperative. Top RealSelf doctor Amir Yazdan, for example, oversees the entire hair transplant procedure to guarantee proper graft orientation, prevent hair graft loss, and ensure natural hair grouping design.

Are FUE Procedures Safe? It Depends on Your Doctor

The problem with online research and online hair ‘experts’ is how often misleading and false their information is. Many hair restoration practices will wax knowledgeable about the who, what, and where of proper hair transplant procedures, often urging you to contact one of their ‘hair loss specialists’ for guidance. Very often this is a rhetorical ruse, employed to give the illusion of impeccable expertise and time-honored success. The reality is much less spectacular.
Whenever you’re urged to contact a crew of hair loss specialists, beware, plurality signals a lack of expertise. The best hair care treatment you can possibly receive will come from an individualized and personalized consultation with a veteran hair transplant physician or surgeon.
For example, at Modena Hair Institute in Orange County, inquiring clients always meet with board certified physician and specialized hair restoration surgeon, Dr. Amir Yazdan, for a personal solution to their hair loss troubles. A successful FUE procedure at Modena starts with a detailed examination and technical analysis of the patient. Such important background factors as the genetic endowment of the individual, health history, and health of donor site are examined.

countess vaugn hair loss
Dr. Yazdan discusses Traction Alopecia with Countess Vaughn on The Doctor’s TV Show.

The safety of FUE transplant procedures, therefore, heavily depends on the experience and expertise of the guiding physician, their operating method, and the nature of their instrumentation. For increased precision and minimal incision marks, Dr. Yazdan will use a micropunch as small as .7mm diameter in order to extract follicular units out of the donor area and implant them into the hairline gently and with perfect artistry.
Although FUE procedures are known as the safest and least invasive of existing surgical restoration options, tragedy can strike if surgical misapplication and misjudgment caused by poor operative care occurs.
What are the risks associated with having a hair transplant operation done by unlicensed technicians, physicians assistants, or inexperienced FUE surgeons? This list covers only a few:

  • Hair loss
  • Scarring
  • Infection
  • Botched appearance
  • Wrong direction of hair growth
  • Plugged graft look
  • Unnatural looking hair

FUE hair transplantation is usually sought after for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness, but can be a treatment option for many types of hair loss. Follicular unit extraction (FUE), when performed by a master physician skilled in hand-crafted precision instrumentation – not major surgical instruments or automated robots – is a completely safe and confidence-boosting procedure.
Make sure that you do your research, follow the guidelines set out above, and ask critically relevant questions of every hair restoration clinic you survey.
