How to keep your skin from drying out this winter

While winter weather may bring some fun activities, it doesn’t bring fun things for your skin. The low humidity levels outdoors means dryer air while increased heat indoors means less moisture in the air. Colder weather means a harsher environment for your skin, drying it out, and causing a slew of other unfavorable traits such as chapping, redness, itching, and even cracking and bleeding.
If you don’t care for your face and skin this winter, you can find yourself with some undesirable skin. And no one wants that! So we’ve put together a list of tips for how to keep your skin comfortable and healthy.
Use luke-warm water. Too-hot water can dry out the skin while too-cold is just unpleasant. Try to stick with luke-warm water to avoid stripping your skin of its natural oils.
Moisturize after every wash/rinse. Moisturizing immediately following a wash is the best way to get skin moisture right when you need it.
Choose a quality moisturizer. Stay away from petroleum-based and water-based moisturizers during the winter months. Oil-based are more likely to help your skin retain moisture.
Choose a quality cleanser. While cleansers containing glycolic or salicylic acid are effective, they can be overly drying in the winter months. Rotating cleansers with the seasons can save your skin.
Protect it. Protecting your skin with physical barriers such as hats, gloves, and scarves, will keep skin from getting wind-burn during extreme weather. For not-so-extreme weather, don’t forget the sunscreen. Winter rays are just as harmful as summer rays!
Hydrate from the inside out. Drinking water and consuming fruits and veggies with a high water content will help your skin stay moisturized.
Use a deep moisturizer or moisturizing mask overnight. Naturally moisturizing ingredients like honey, avocado, yogurt, and oils will pamper your dry winter skin. Leave it on for 30 mins or sleep in it overnight.
Don’t skip exfoliating. Exfoliating dead skin cells will help prevent build up and clogged pores. During winter when your skin is more likely to be dry and flaky, its especially important to exfoliate and keep skin fresh and clean.

Do I have to take a medication like finasteride if I want to get a hair transplant?

A common question we receive is regarding the use of finasteride before, during, or after a hair transplant procedure. Finasteride is a common drug that is used to treat or prevent hair loss. While it is a prescription-only medication that must be ordered by a doctor and is only given on a case-by-case basis, it often recommended to individuals who are experiencing progressing hair loss and are interested in getting a hair transplant procedure.
The reason finasteride is often recommended to hair transplant patients is because it can help prevent continued/future hair loss. This helps maintain the health of the current hairs on your head and prolongs the time you’ll have those hairs. Why worry about the health of your native hairs when you’re looking into transplanting new hairs anyways? If you don’t care for the surrounding native hairs, you will likely need another transplant to cover those areas much sooner than you thought – costing you more money over time.
While side effects of the drug are relatively rare, they are a concern for many individuals who are considering taking the medication, rightfully so. As with any medication that has side effects, both the doctor and the patient must decide together if the possible benefits of taking the drug outweigh the risk of the side effects.
If you decide that you don’t want to take finasteride, this doesn’t mean that you’re no longer a candidate for hair transplantation. What it does mean, is that your hair loss may continue to progress as you age, and you may need another hair transplant in the future to cover the new areas of hair loss.
Whatever you decide, make sure to thoroughly do your research and ask your physician any questions you might have.

No shave November – tips for keeping your beard professional

Want to participate in no shave November, but have to keep it professional for work? We understand the struggle. It used to be that beards weren’t professional and weren’t allowed as employees at nicer firms, restaurants, or businesses. But in 2017, a lot has changed, and there’s a lot more freedom now when it comes to personal expression in the workplace.
That’s why we’ve created some tips to help you keep your beard prim and proper, so you can keep your professionalism.
Trimming doesn’t count as shaving. While we’re all for indulging in no shave November, trimming is an exception. Trimming your beard will allow you to keep your beard looking nice and tidy, and in turn more professional. There’s just no way to make scraggly hair look professional.
Keep your lines tidy by trimming edges around the cheek and neckline. Keeping these lines straight will keep your beard looking purposeful.
Treat your beard like you treat your hair. If you’re going to be growing your beard as long as (or longer than) your hair, then you should be treating it with the same care. Shampooing, conditioning, moisturizing, and even styling isn’t just for your scalp hair. If you want your beard to look nice then treat it nice. Cleanliness and moisturizing will keep your beard hair look soft and healthy (rather than old and dingy).
Keep your scalp hair neat. Life is about balance and so is the art of no shave November. Don’t over-do it by growing your head hair out as well as your beard hair. Tidiness in your head hair will help you to maintain a professional appearance.

How effective is body hair for scalp hair transplantation?

Many individuals who seek a hair transplant to solve their balding concerns turn out to not be the best candidates for the procedure. Why? Because their scalp doesn’t have sufficient quality hairs in their donor area.
The donor area is typically the area at the back of the scalp. With both FUE and FUT/strip surgeries, follicles are extracted from the back of the scalp and transplanted into the recipient zone (balding area). But, there are other areas of the body that can be used for a donor area in the event the scalp lacks quality donor hairs.
Typically, the beard, chest, and back are the first, second, and third choices for donor body hair. That being said, body hair transplants are not the right choice for every patient. While some may be good body hair candidates and have successful hair transplants from body hair, others may not.
Many factors determine if a body hair transplant will be effective for you. Ultimately, we’re looking for the body hair to be a similar match to the scalp hair. That way, it will blend in as it grows, maintaining uniformity throughout. If the body hair is drastically different than the scalp hair (curly vs straight, coarse vs thin) than the look may not be the most desirable. The idea is that no one will be able to tell you had a hair transplant, and the hair transplant looks like your natural hair prior to hair loss.
To determine if you’re a candidate for scalp or body hair transplantation you should meet with a hair restoration surgeon for a hair evaluation. Make sure to thoroughly do your research prior to committing to a surgeon, as not all surgeons are skilled in body hair transplantation.

The latest fitness trends

Every year new fitness trends hit the market. From yoga to jazzercise, new ways of staying fit come and go. While some are here to stay, others don’t stick. The key is finding a method that works for you and helps you find fitness fun and efficient.
The latest fitness trends involve technology, group training, and functional fitness. To find out more about these innovative fitness methods, keep reading.
Technology. Fitness trackers have been involved in fitness for sometime now. From step trackers to heart rate monitors, technology helps us stay motivated and keep on track with our fitness goals. This trend won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
Group training. Group fitness programs have only been increasing in occurrence over the past 10 years. And it makes sense why. Group fitness classes like SoulCycle, CrossFit, and Orangetheory are based on the premise that those who work out with the support of others are more likely to stick with a program. The longer you stick with a program the more effective it is and the more likely you are to see results.
Functional fitness. Functional fitness is about getting fit where it matters. While looking good is always nice, what’s more important is that you have strength where you need it. If you look good but can’t move your bookshelf, carry in your groceries from your car, or pull your body up out the pool, then you aren’t doing your fitness right. This type of training is meant to improve coordination, balance, and endurance. It can be incorporated in many different types of training programs (like CrossFit and HIIT) as well as injury rehabilitation.

A glass of wine a day keeps the doctor away

You’ve heard the rumors before – wine is good for you. But is this really true? New scientific research proves it is. Below we list some of our favorite benefits of the beverage of our ancestors.
Promotes longevity. When compared to drinkers of beer and liquor, wine drinkers have a significantly lower mortality rate of about 30%.
Promotes heart health. Those who indulge moderately and suffer from high blood pressure are significantly less likely to suffer a heart attack than their nondrinking counterparts. Additionally, wine contains procyanidins which protect the heart from disease.
Reduces risk of Type II diabetes. Wine drinkers have a significantly lower risk of developing diabetes than their nondrinking counterparts.
Reduces risk of stroke. Moderate drinkers have a 50% less chance of stroke than nondrinkers. The risk of suffering a blood-clot is reduced significantly.
Reduces risk of colon cancer. Red wine in particular has been shown to cut the risk of colon cancer by almost half.
Promotes brain health. As we age, decline in brain function is inevitable. But studies have shown that brain function declines faster in those who don’t indulge in a drink than those who do.
Reduces risk of cataracts. Those who drink wine are less likely to develop cataracts than other drinkers, and both groups are significantly less likely than nondrinkers.
If you are considering drinking wine to improve your health benefits, make sure you stick to 1-2 glasses at a time. The key to these health benefits is wine in moderation.
The science behind why wine has so many health benefits is not yet fully understood. Researchers are continuing their studies to try and discover the why behind the wine.

Turkey hair transplant surgery gone wrong

Here’s why you should think twice about getting a hair transplant surgery abroad. This patient came to our office seeking a restorative hair transplant surgery to fix his botched surgery. He traveled to Turkey to get a “more affordable” hair transplant. He was told he would be getting
an FUT/strip procedure and would be getting the most “bang for his buck.” Upon returning home, the patient began noticing darkening on the top of scalp. He also noticed a wide linear scar that stretched across the back of his scalp that was extremely visible.
The patient tried contacting his doctor but was unable to get a hold of him due to the time difference and lack of returned calls/emails by the physician. Within just a few short months, his scalp looked like this. The once black area developed into dead scalp tissue and severe scar tissue with complete graft failure and hair loss. The linear scar never recovered and there is a hair loss in a linear pattern across the scalp.
Unfortunately, this is a common outcome we see of hair transplants done abroad. Doctors in other countries are not held to the same high standards that doctors in the US are held to. The
early blackening of the scalp is a tell-tale sign of necrosis. This is caused by infection and is completely preventable if the surgeon is skilled, experienced, and has a clean, sterile environment. Once necrosis occurs, it is very difficult to treat. This patient will likely not have hair growth in the dead tissue area again. His best hope will be aggressive PRP treatment to try and heal the area and break up the scar tissue. If the scalp is able to regain some blood circulation and healthy tissue again, then transplanted hair may be successful  in the area. Any attempts at remedying this case will be hopeful at best, as there are no guarantees with botched hair transplants.

You can prevent this from happening to you! Your hair transplant is an investment in your future appearance. Find a good, trustworthy hair restoration surgeon that is local. While it may cost you more up front (compared to Turkey’s prices), you’ll save more time, money, and stress in the long run.

How important is following your doctor’s post hair transplant surgery instructions?

So, you’ve just gotten a hair transplant. Congratulations! Now what? Your doctor should have given you a detailed list of “post-op instructions.” While this list can be quite tedious to read, commit to memory, and implement in your daily life for the weeks following surgery, below we discuss how and why it’s important to follow post surgery instructions.
Post-op hair transplant instructions cover detailed information about the healing processes of your scalp and hair, how to care for your hair to aid in obtaining the best results possible, and strict guidelines to what to do and what not to do.
Following these instructions will ensure your hair transplant is successful. If you fail to follow the instructions carefully, it may mean diminished results. So protect your investment and take the time to read the instructions.
Below is a list of some common post-op care elements that play an integral role in the success of your hair transplant. Please make sure to follow your doctor’s orders and don’t hesitate to ask any questions if you’re confused.

  • Slight pain and discomfort is common for the first few days following surgery. Over the counter pain medication such as Tylenol, Aspirin, or Advil can be useful in treating the pain.
  • Some bleeding or oozing from the sites may occurring during the night after your surgery. This is normal. Make sure not to scratch or pick at the scalp at all. Your body is going through its healing process, so just sit tight and let it be.
  • Some swelling and numbing may occur. This is normal and can be treated by icing the scalp. Just make sure not to touch the newly transplanted grafts with your hands or the ice.
  • You may begin shampooing a couple days after surgery. Be very gentle! Avoid using nails or finger tips. Water should be on gentle and shampoo should be gentle as well.
  • Avoid exercise for a minimum of 10 days. Exercising causes increased heart rate which can cause pressure on the scalp and possibly dislodge grafts.

Is coloring my hair causing it to fall out?

This is a common question we get from patients who enjoy coloring their hair regularly. Some individuals notice increased hair loss around their coloring sessions, while others have heard bad things about hair dye and are wondering if the damage could cause hair loss. The answer depends on a variety of factors.
The first factor is the current condition and health of your hair. If you have strong, healthy hair, then coloring your hair a few times a year will most likely not damage it so severely that you experience hair loss. While it is true that hair dyes can be harsh on the hair (even the most expensive kinds), if our hair is healthy in every other way, it is likely resilient enough to withstand some coloring. That being said, hair is like life in that everything is about balance and moderation. Coloring your hair frequently doesn’t allow the hair to regenerate and heal and over time can cause irreversible damage. Try going with a balyage style that requires little maintenance.
The second factor is what kind of hair coloring you are doing. Box hair dyes and bleach jobs are the worst options for your hair’s health. Bleach strips your hairs follicles, and if you have naturally darker hair, this can be extremely damaging. Box dyes are made of cheap ingredients and they sacrifice quality for price and time. If you’re going to color your hair, do it the right way, and spend the money on a professional. Salons are equipped with moisturizing sealants that help minimize the damage to your hair.
Thirdly, if you are prone to hair loss or have been experiencing it recently, lay off the dye until you track down the cause and find a working solution. Sometimes a change in medication or starting a new medicated shampoo is all it takes.
In conclusion, it’s possible that hair coloring may be contributing to your hair loss, but in most cases of healthy-haired individuals, this isn’t a problem. Just make sure you’re taking care of your hair and doing deep conditioning masks and getting trims as often as possible.

Help! My transplanted grafts are falling out. Is this normal?

Many individuals feel great alarm in the time after their hair transplant surgery when they see that their transplanted hairs are falling out. Is this natural? Is this a sign that surgery was unsuccessful? Below we address what is normal and what is not, and when you should actually be alarmed.
It is important to note that there is a difference between graft shedding and grafts falling out. It can be hard to tell the difference between the two, but graft shedding is when the newly transplanted hairs fall out naturally within a few days to a few weeks post-surgery. Grafts falling out is when the entire hair follicle has fallen out of its place. The former is a natural, healthy process of hair transplantation, while the latter is right to spark some concern.
In successful surgeries, we do not expect to see the entire graft fall out. A skilled and experienced surgeon is versed in the secure placement of grafts, so ideally, grafts should be snugly in place. Sometimes, if the patient is not careful with their scalp following surgery, and bumps it or is rough with it, this can cause the grafts to fall out. This is why we urge the utmost caution after surgery, especially in traveling, sleeping, washing, and changing.
Because it is so hard for the untrained eye to tell the difference between normal graft shedding and grafts falling out, most times we are not able to determine the success of the surgery until 6 months – 1 year post-op. This is because hair grows in cycles, and it can take some time for the new hairs to adapt and fall into line. After 1 year, you will know for sure whether or not the grafts survived and were successful. While most patients are not happy to hear this timeline, it is the most effective way to determine success of hair transplantation.
If you’re concerned about the success of your surgery, and would like a second or third opinion, give us a call today.

The best ways to alleviate post-work out soreness

When we really push ourselves at the gym or on a hike, the soreness afterwards can sometimes hurt so bad it’s almost enough to dissuade us from returning to that activity.
Soreness is caused by a build-up of lactic acid that causes inflammation, pain, and tenderness. There have been many studies which have sought to find the most effective way at relieving soreness. Ultimately, which method of relief will be effective really depends on your body.
Below, we’ve listed some of the most popular and quickest ways to alleviate soreness so  you can quickly get back to doing the things you enjoy.
Stretching – while it may hurt while you’re doing it, stretching is one of the best ways to alleviate soreness. The pulling and contraction of your muscles moves the lactic acid around helping it disperse throughout the body. If you want to alleviate your pain, you’ve got to go through a bit of pain first.
Rolling – rolling is another one of the pain relief methods that requires a bit of pain at first. This method involves utilizing a foam tube to ‘roll’ muscles out. To learn how best to use this tool, look up some youtube tutorials.
Supplements – supplements such as glutamine and branched-chain amino acids help muscles to repair quickly. They can drastically reduce your recovery time and have they have added nutrient benefits as well.
Hydration – probably the most important (and easiest) thing you can do is hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Water helps flush your system and keep your cells and organs happy. Maintain your water level so your body can work efficiently and effectively to eliminate the acid build-up.
Ice bath/pack – the best combatant for inflammation (read: muscle soreness) is ice. Applying ice or better yet, submersing in an ice bath, can greatly reduce inflammation. Bonus: ice numbs nerve receptors which means less pain.

Why is PRP therapy so expensive?

The price of PRP treatments varies widely from office to office. Multiple factors can affect the price such as the components in the serum and the method in which the plasma is extracted.
Components are composed of added nutrients that increase collagen regeneration and other healing factors, aiding in hair regrowth. These components are added at the doctor’s discretion and have varying price ranges.
There are many ‘kits’ that can be used in the extraction and processing phase. These kits have varying tube sizes and routes of extraction, as well as centrifuges (machines that spin the plasma and separate the healing factors). The kits and centrifuges vary greatly in price and are rather expensive for good quality. While cost and quality is usually correlated, the pricing is ultimately up to the manufacturer. Until PRP treatments become more popular, the manufacturers will have ultimate say over the price.
While both components and kits determine the price of PRP, the doctors’ time and expertise typically account for the biggest fraction of the price. There are some procedures that involve little physician time and are relatively easy skill-wise; PRP is not one of these procedures. PRP therapy requires extensive expertise and time. The doctor has to utilize a concise method in order to ensure result which requires him to spend a lot of one on one time with the patient. With any procedure requiring constant physician time and skill, the price is likely to be higher.
If there is a drastically lower price (outside of specials) for a PRP treatment compared to that of similar establishments in your area, you should be being cautious of doctors cutting corners. If the price is lower, they may be going with lower quality components and equipment or outsourcing their time and expertise to technicians.

I’m a woman with thinning hair. Am I a candidate for hair transplantation?

Most women experience a type of hair loss known as diffuse thinning. Rather than focused areas of hair loss (such as what men often experience), with balding in the crown or hairline, diffuse thinning is characterized by equally distributed hair loss across the scalp. This evenly dispersed hair loss presents itself as hair thinning.
Unfortunately, this type of hair loss is not the most ideal hair loss type for hair transplantation. That doesn’t mean those with diffuse thinning are definitely not candidates for the surgery, but it definitely means you’ll need to meet 1-on-1 with a hair restoration surgeon to assess your scalp and hair loss.
Women, in particular, pose a particular challenge with diffuse thinning hair loss and hair transplantation. The style in which most women wear their hair, can make transplantation quite difficult. Long hair gets in the way and conceals the scalp thereby concealing areas in need of graft transplantation. For women with short hair, these issues would be eliminated, and their candidacy may be improved.
Women with tension hair loss (as a result of wearing weaves or hair tightly pulled back) and traditional Norwood scale-type hair loss are the most ideal candidates for hair transplantation. Regardless of the type of hair loss you have, there are options for restoring your hair. We have seen great success in our female patients with alternative medical management hair loss options such as PRP therapy and laser therapy.

Is hair transplantation a cure for hair loss?

We get this question a lot – is hair transplantation a cure for hair loss or a treatment? The difference between treatments and cures can get a little confusing so let’s break it down.
Treatments
Treatments are medications, therapies, or surgeries that help address the issue at hand. In this case, treatments like Finasteride, minoxidil, laser therapy, and PRP therapy address hair loss in individuals. These treatments may help prevent hair loss, slow its progression, or address an immediate concern (scalp buildup, infection, promotion of healing or growth factors, etc.).
Cures
Cures solves the problem at hand. Unfortunately, there isn’t a cure for hair loss at this time. There is some promising research, and scientists believe they’re close to curing baldness, but at the present time, the aforementioned treatments will have to suffice for those suffering from hair loss.
So which is hair transplantation – a treatment or a cure?
This is where it gets tricky. Despite what many believe, hair transplants don’t cure hair loss. They may solve the immediate problem at hand (filling in an area of baldness), but the root of the problem is not solved. In other words, your hair loss will progress through your native (non-transplanted) hair as you age despite getting a hair transplant. While you can rest assured the transplanted hair is here to stay (not effected by hair loss progression), if you only rely on hair transplantation to solve your hair loss woes, you’ll be playing a costly game of catch up for the rest of your life.
This is why we recommend a multi-method approach to addressing hair loss. Choosing an effective treatment to work alongside hair transplantation will extend the life of your hair and buy you more time before your next hair transplant.

5 fall style trends men should know about

It’s that time of year again – colder weather (unless you live in southern California), changing scenery, pumpkin-flavored everything, and new style trends. While it can be hard to keep up with the latest fashion trends, we’ve made it a bit easier for you by compiling a handy list of the hottest and easiest fall trends to track this year. You killed it in the summer, now bring your fashion into the fall.
Jackets. Quilted jackets are warm and fashionable. They come in many styles, bombers, motos, and blazers, and can be dressed up or down. These jackets will take you from the office to a night out effortlessly. Opt for a classy solid color (like black) or a two-tone for more attitude.
Fur. Hear us out: its warm and tough (Game of Thrones anyone?) and best in small doses. Incorporate some fur this season by adding a fur collar or scarf to your outfit. You’ll be different, trendy, and an instant statement-maker.
Graphic knits. The ugly Christmas-sweater trend has morphed into the graphic knit. Which is better because now you can wear your pun-ny, comfy sweater all season long. They’re a great conversation-starter and can be dressed up (add a collared shirt underneath) or down (pair with jeans and boots).
Funner suits. The suit is timeless, classic, and a necessity. But suit trends definitely change with the seasons. This year, people are favoring more adventurous colors, patterns, and cuts. If you’re worried about going overboard, dip a toe in the water first by incorporating subtle patterns and colors (like a low-key slim-line plaid print or a warm burgundy-black).
Turtlenecks. That’s right, neck sweaters are back. But this time, they’re more sophisticated and less-grandpa-y. The cowl-neck is a big hit, with more material and a looser neck.
A full head of hair is always in style. If you’re suffering from hair loss, schedule a consultation with us today. We can help you find the cause and the solution so you can feel confident and trendy in every situation this season.

Wish you had a beard for the holiday season?

Now you can have one!
Hair transplants aren’t just for your head anymore. Hair transplants can give you hair anywhere you need or want it – like on your face.
Recent trends over the past 10 years have been in favor of thicker, fuller brows, and a thicker, fuller beard. Unfortunately, we weren’t all gifted with ample facial hair. Thankfully, advancements in hair transplantation have met the demands of the people. And as a result, facial hair transplants such as beard and eyebrow transplants are on the rise.
Facial hair transplants are very similar to scalp transplants. They involve extracting grafts from a donor area (such as the back of the scalp), and transplanting them into the desired area. Extractions can be done via the FUE or FUT/Strip methods.
Because eyebrows are a smaller area, they typically only require a small amount of grafts, around 300-500. Beards can vary quite a bit due to the patient’s desired size, shape, and coverage. For example, some patients look to fill in patchy areas and add density, while others are looking to build a beard from scratch. Beard graft quotes typically range from 500-1500.
Just like scalp hair transplants, beard and eyebrow transplants are your own natural hair, growing in naturally on your face. Your brows and beard will look natural because they are. No more temporary or permanent make up tricks.
Get the look you desire. If you’re interested in learning more about facial hair transplants and finding out if you’re a candidate for this game-changing procedure, give us a call today.
