Botched or Corrective Hair Transplants

Hair restoration is the most powerful and permanent way of correcting hair loss in men and women.

When it comes to hair restoration surgery, the best results are achieved when a highly skilled and experienced hair restoration surgeon performs the surgery from start to finish.

Dr. Yazdan’s highly specialized and artistic FUE Method:

  • Micro incisions 0.8mm (Most clinics use 1.2mm)
  • Accurate Depth Control
  • Graft Survival Rate up to 99%
  • Recipient sites created with natural hair line design

Over the past decade, techniques for performing hair restoration have advanced greatly, making the surgery more reliable and capable of producing very natural, lasting results. There are, however, still plenty of opportunities for hair transplants to go wrong and produce undesirable results. When a patient is not happy with the results of a hair transplant, he or she may seek a corrective hair transplant to provide a more natural look.

With hair restoration becoming more and more popular, many surgeons and medical practices seek ways to capitalize on this revenue stream – even ones who may not have the experience or skills required to successfully perform hair transplants.

In other cases, hair restoration clinics may perform hair transplants using a rotating staff of surgeons and support teams, rather than using one surgical team to perform the surgery from start to finish.

Common mistakes include unskilled removal of hair follicles from the donor site, which can result in scarring or uneven patches, and unnatural or unsuitable placement of the hair grafts. In some cases, grafts are placed so badly that new hair growth does not occur.

This helps prevent errors when the hair grafts are harvested from the donor site and when they are transplanted to their new location. Another key to success is the surgeon’s artistic skill – a natural and aesthetically pleasing outcome depends upon the surgeon’s ability to reproduce the patient’s natural hairline.

Thanks to many years of experience performing hair transplants, Dr. Yazdan is able to easily identify what has gone wrong during a primary hair transplant. He then creates a plan to correct these mistakes so he can craft a more natural outcome for the patient. Once the errors have been identified and a plan created, the corrective hair transplant is performed similarly to any other hair transplant performed by Dr. Yazdan.

  • The first step involves harvesting hair grafts from the donor site. Dr. Yazdan will take special care to preserve the integrity of the scalp in the donor area and, if necessary, will work to address any scarring that occurred during the primary hair transplant. The approach used will depend upon the patient’s unique needs and the condition of the donor site.
  • Next the hair grafts are carefully prepared for transplantation.
  • Finally the hair grafts are individually placed in the recipient site, with special attention given to the angle of placement, density, pattern and hairline shape.

Dr. Yazdan and his medical team manage the entire process from start to finish, helping to ensure a more consistent, natural result.

When performed by a surgeon who specializes in corrective hair transplants, the results of the surgery will be natural, aesthetically pleasing, and a dramatic improvement from the primary hair transplant. Hair begins to grow around 3 months postoperatively. The full results of a hair transplant are usually seen within 12 to 18 months. More than one procedure may be required, the need for which will be accessed after the hair grows in.

Correcting Bad Hair Transplants

Botched Strip Hair Transplant NOT Conducted at Modena

Contemporary hair loss sufferers are quite spoiled for choices in today’s hair transplant marketplace, as surgical advances in FUE and FUT have resulted in much more refined and natural-looking outcomes. With the exception of black-market clinics, the potential hair transplant patient today faces a renaissance of robust procedural options.

But this was not always the case. Prior to the refined and exacting technical FUE advancements of the 21st century, the ‘plug’ method of hair transplantation was ubiquitously employed in hair restoration clinics across the world.

Hair plugs were widely used until they were replaced by newer transplant techniques in the late 1990s. The plug technique involves small, circular pieces of tissue – each containing 20 or more hairs – being removed from the back of the scalp using a clunky punch tool. Slightly smaller circular sections would then be cut out of the balding areas of the scalp, before the hair plugs were transplanted into the holes.

There were several flaws with this technique. For a start, when the plugs of hair were removed from the back of the head, the patient would often be left with tell-tale circular scars. Worse still, the hair plugs would grow in an unnatural pattern, often clustered together in bunches, not unlike dolls’ hair.

In every case regarding an experienced and skilled hair transplant, the end result ought closely to align with what was discussed during the initial consultation between the doctor and patient. It is also during this time that the doctor will be able to outline any potential issues that could arise due to circumstances unique to the patient. A relative lack of available donor tissue, for example, could make it difficult to deliver the appropriate degree of coverage in the recipient site.

Modena Hair Institute’s Corrective Treatments
The best way to address and repair any problem with a previous hair transplant is to seek out the assistance of an experienced and reputable hair transplant surgeon who possesses a substantial track record of successfully performing hair transplant repairs.
This includes problems associated with a lack of adequate coverage or problems associated with a failed hair transplant in which far too many grafts failed to take root in the patient’s recipient site.

Patients with inadequate coverage but sufficient donor tissue available can easily address their hair transplant issue with additional sessions of FUE or FUT. Needless to say, patients requiring multiple sessions of hair restoration should have been informed of the need for more than one transplant right from the outset during the initial consultation process, but, unfortunately, this is not always the case.

Finally, patients who are dissatisfied with the result of their hair transplant due to the failure of the grafts to take root can also undergo additional sessions to achieve the coverage they initially sought, provided, of course, that there is sufficient donor tissue still available for use in future sessions.

Seven Signs You’re in The Wrong Hair Restoration Clinic

So, you’ve decided you’re ready to get a hair transplant, and all you need to do is figure out where you’re getting it done. A bad hair clinic is the last thing on your mind. These days, you have quite a few options, and we can’t blame you if you’re feeling overwhelmed by your choices. We also know that some of them are more tempting than others, although there are a few things you should know about certain clinics you’ll encounter in your search. To help you avoid damage to your health and hair, we’ve put together a handy list of ways you can tell you’re at the wrong hair restoration clinic.

  • The price seems too good to be true.

Just like any other medical procedure, hair transplants come with a notable price tag, and we can understand why someone would be intrigued by the more affordable competition. However, when the price goes way down, it almost always means they’re cutting corners somewhere. Whether they’re cheaping out on clinic upkeep & equipment, or lacking in other things we’ll discuss in this list, you may very well get a subpar experience that ends in disaster.

  • They see a lot of patients in a short span of time.

If a hair restoration “expert” boasts about being able to perform eight procedures in a single day, you might want to hold back your amazement. Any hair transplant, whether it’s a FUE or FUT procedure, is going to require extremely careful attention to detail, and will take a good amount of the day to successfully perform. If the person running the clinic is having people come in en masse, it’s more than likely that they’re not putting in their full effort & care into each procedure.

  • The facility isn’t exactly clean.

Like any other medical & surgical procedure, a hair restoration procedure needs to happen in clean, sterile conditions. If you notice the office is generally dirty, or find that the tools aren’t stored in the safest & most organized way, the risks are even greater than those that meet the eye. Your chance of infection skyrockets if the operating room isn’t kept in pristine condition, and disorganization around the office is a clear indicator of a clinic’s general lack of professionalism.

A botched hair transplant performed at an outside clinic.
  • The person performing the procedure isn’t a licensed physician.

No matter what those as certain clinics might tell you, having anyone besides a licensed physician performing your hair transplant is extremely ill advised. There’s a lot of medical knowledge that goes into hair restoration, and having someone lacking that knowledge working on your scalp, beard, eyebrows, or any other part of you is the wrong move. It’s not enough for them to be in the room while an assistant does it, either; if there’s any sign that an assistant or technician will be handling the procedure, find the door as fast as you can.

  • They don’t have lengthy experience in hair restoration.

Just being licensed as a physician isn’t enough, though. You’ll want to be sure that your hair restoration surgeon, like Dr. Yazdan at Modena Hair Institute in Newport, Beverly Hills & Las Vegas, has specific experience in performing those procedures. Beyond mere familiarity, he’s extracted over three million grafts across the FUE & FUT procedures he’s performed in his career. There are specific aspects of hair transplant procedures that can only be learned over time, and it should be a priority for you to make sure that the person working on your hair has worked with cases like yours in the past.

  • They lack a diverse array of tools.

As any experienced hair restoration surgeon knows, every patient brings different challenges to the table. With that in mind, a clinic only having a few different tools at their disposal should be a massive red flag for you. Not every tool works for every person, and anyone pushing that sort of one-size-fits-all logic is prioritizing their convenience & bottom line over your hair and health. In contrast, the best hair restoration surgeons you’ll find will have a very wide range of tools to utilize in any given procedure.

  • They market certain tools more than the person using them.

Lastly, in step with the previous point, you should keep a wide distance between you & a clinic that promotes a certain machine or tool like it’s the doctor performing the transplant. Tools assist in getting these procedures done successfully, sure, but the surgeons are the ones doing the actual work. If a clinic shies away from talking about the surgeon in favor of touting their equipment, there’s a real possibility that an unqualified “expert” (or even a technician) is guiding the highly-praised tools & putting you at risk in turn.

When you come to one of Modena Hair Institute’s California or Nevada locations, we promise you’ll be met with nothing but professionals & the highest standards in the industry. We limit ourselves to one procedure a day so we know our patients are properly cared for, and hold our clinics to strict sanitary standards. Dr. Yazdan performs every procedure at Modena, helped by his close & dedicated team of assistants, and the combination of his experience & training means you’ll be in good hands. We keep a strong selection of tools at hand to properly treat individual cases, and we know the tools are only as effective as the hands putting them to use.

A Cautionary Hair Loss Testimonial

modena testimonial
Hello all. This is Stephen, one of Dr. Amir Yazdan’s former patients. I write this letter to anyone who is considering getting a hair transplant – whether you’re hesitant, somewhat sure, or absolutely sure.
If you have stumbled upon my letter you are lucky because when I was in your position, I wish that such a testimonial had been written. One which describes all the errors and mistakes one can run into when trying to recover your sense of confidence. I urge you to read this letter and avoid the mistakes I made. I’m writing this letter because I need to. I know what hair loss can do to people. How it can affect every aspect of their life. How it can make them suffer at work, at home or in their social lives. How it can engender fear and insecurity. How it can change one’s whole attitude and approach to life. I’m here to say you should not spend one more minute letting hair loss rule your emotions and govern your feelings.
Secondly, and more importantly, if reading this letter helps even one person to avoid what I went through then my efforts will be successful. I was defrauded, I was mutilated and I was humiliated. I’m too scared to go public and confront the culprits so this is my way of dealing with what happened to me. I will carry the scars associated with my mistakes for the rest of my life.
In my early 20s I started to lose my hair and felt an agonizing insecurity around my peer group. The problems with my hair dominated my life. I studied all the options online and through people who suffered hair loss, there was not many and I went with what I thought was the best option. This is where my nightmare years began. It’s difficult still to admit but I was fooled by sales campaigns and sweet sounding rhetoric.
My ‘treatments’ spanned nearly ten years and I will just say that I also wasted large amounts of money. I started out by putting artificial hairs into my head. What a bad decision that was. They did not work, they caused regular infections, broke, fell out and looked totally unnatural. Even though I have since had them removed, these procedures have caused permanent damage to my skin.
The next thing I was sold was a bad hair transplant overseas. Although the initial results of my hair transplant looked promising, after almost a year it was clear that my appearance looks pluggy, unnatural and botched. Even more than this, this unnamed hair clinic overseas has left the back and sides of my head in permanent damaged scarring form. Whereas before I only suffered hair loss, now I was sporting a botched front hairline with visible scars on the back and sides of my head.
My story finally gets better when I discover Dr. Yazdan and his excellent hair restoration team. Miraculously he has slowly and artfully restored much of the damage done to my hairline over the past decade. My hairline has been improved on and the damage and the scarring at the back of my head has also been attended to as best as it can be. Dr. Yazdan was honest with me from day one and I appreciated when he told me that he could not do miracles, but assured me that he would do his best. He did not fail me on that promise. What also heartens me is that while there is not much more that can be done, the intimate contact and personal checkups will always be there.
I urge any readers, don’t let yourself be fooled like I was. Hair restoration is an expert’s business and only the absolute experts, like Amir at Modena Hair Institute, should be trusted to work on your hairline.

When Hair Transplants Fail: Modena’s Patient Advocacy

why hair transplants fail
Many medical practices – both small and large – are laying claim to the art of hair transplantation. This is happening for a number of not-so-good reasons. Hair transplantation has grown increasingly popular in the last few years and is reliably conjectured to continue booming well into the next decade. As men and women grow more comfortable with the use of aesthetic procedures, especially those involving hair restoration, clinics of all cosmetic and surgical backgrounds are seeking to add hair transplantation to their menu of offerings.
This can spell disaster for would-be patients of those clinics, as well as established hair transplant practitioners who command a dynamic, erudite and prestigious background.
As visceral advocates for patient safety, we would like to highlight the most important points of verification when researching hair transplant doctors. First and foremost, find out the level of skill and expertise of the operating physician, and make sure they are board-certified. Salient features which define top hair transplant practitioners are:

  • Member of distinguished hair transplant societies like the International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons (IAHRS) and the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS).
  • Board-certified
  • Provides a thorough exposition of the surgical or medical plan. What will the surgery entail? What kind of grafting will take place? How many future sessions or appointments may be needed?
  • Substantial number of successful transplants performed. Willingness to share case studies and provide reliable testimonials.
  • Extremely patient friendly and easy to be around. They should not try to sell or seduce you into a quick and hasty decision.
  • Willingness to provide before-after photographs of the donor and recipient sites, so that you are very sure of the results.
  • Specializes exclusively in hair transplantation and hair restoration.

As director of Modena Hair Institute, Dr. Yazdan has pioneered sophisticated hair transplant methods and instrumentation, specifically with regard to Follicular Unit Extraction. His hair restoration efforts have focused on patient care and post-op success. Schedule a personal consultation with him today.

Dr. Yazdan Attends 2018 Annual ISHRS Conference in Los Angeles

hair conference 2018 pic 3
ISHRS hosts 26th World Congress in Hollywood, Calif., Oct. 10-14, 2018
2018 marks another great year in medical and hair restoration research. This year we Southern Californians were fortunate enough to have the largest and most prestigious hair restoration conference take place in our own backyard.
With the theme “When Award Winning Hair Transplant Surgeons Meet”, the 26th World Congress of the ISHRS met at Loews Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles on October 10-14, 2018 boasting an exceptional lineup of international speakers and educational offerings.
The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) is a global non-profit medical association where the world’s leading experts in treating hair loss gather to share their most up to date research, techniques, and diagnostic approaches.
Long standing ISHRS member and board-certified physician, Dr. Amir Yazdan of Modena Hair Institute, attended this year’s conference both to share his innovations in follicular unit extraction (FUE) and to keep up with all important advancements in the field.
The conference included many internationally recognized keynote speakers covering an array of topics including: hair biology, innovative diagnostic approaches, novel surgical techniques, body hair transplantation, and more.
hair conference 2018 pic 2
One particular educational program, however, caught the attention of nearly all the distinguished attendees, namely, the Beware of the Hair Transplant Black Market session.
This educational session dives into the portentous growth of cheap, inexperienced, and unethical hair care clinics across America and the globe. Unspecialized physicians and technical operators who have no business even approaching the hairlines or scalp of a balding or shedding patient, are emboldened by the promise of easy money and a new source of revenue. They prop up an eloquent sales campaign or website and sell consumers a trap.
Consumers experiencing hair loss or pattern baldness will tragically rush into whatever hair restoration clinic sounds most appealing or which drives the best bargain. Unbeknownst to them, these so-called hair restoration ‘specialists’ either have little experience or use automated machines that lack precision and artistic execution. This effectively means that patients act as guinea pigs for trainees who are operating machines that can barely execute a decent job. Operations of the aforementioned kind often result in gross, botched, or unnatural-looking hairlines.
beware hair transplant black market
We here at Modena Hair Institute have been especially vocal about this rather sinister trend of crooked hair clinics and inexperienced physicians selling consumers cheap and false promises. Check out our chronicling of this hair transplant black market, and the proven ways in which to avoid it:

When Hair Transplants Go Wrong

Male pattern baldness
Hair transplantation can be a spectacular procedure that rejuvenates and beautifies a person’s hairline. The classic FUE and FUT hair transplant methods can leave patients with a thick and natural looking head of hair.
Producing such great aesthetic outcomes, however, requires great expertise, talent, and experience. Top hair restoration doctors work tirelessly over the period of many years to perfect their transplantation method and protocol. Owning an artistic and technical mastery over a procedure as sensitive, intricate and rigorous as hair transplantation takes extreme specialization.
Predictably, many dermatologists, physicians, and weaker hair care clinics find the time and effort it takes to achieve such mastery exhausting. Leading many practitioners to find shortcuts and capitalize on consumer ignorance. In a popular article entitled, ‘Read This Before You Have a Hair Transplant’, we recount the many ways in which self-proclaimed hair restoration ‘experts’ dilute the truth and sell patients on a false dream.
Given most people’s less-than-adequate understanding of hair restoration techniques and solutions, inexperienced and often unethical physicians prey on consumers who seek genuine and affordable treatment. And not just the average consumer, but even celebrities themselves have fallen victim to bad hair transplants.

There are several factors that can lead to a poor hair transplant outcome:
Old or outdated plug technique
Hair transplants were originally performed using large 3-4mm hair plugs. This is much too large. Patients who underwent this type of procedure often leave with big incision marks and crooked plug outlines. Thankfully this can be repaired quite effectively. New natural follicular units can be transplanted to soften or camouflage the old plugs and restore a natural appearance. In some cases, if the plugs were placed incorrectly, a proper physician can re-transplant the hair from the plugs to the correct area and in the correct growth direction.
Inexperienced surgeon and staff
Some patients have gone to physicians who only rarely or occasionally perform hair restoration surgery. Hair restoration is a very precise and highly specialized field. Almost all the top practitioners in the field specialize exclusively, like Dr. Amir Yazdan, in hair restoration surgery. Inexperience can lead to poor hair growth, bad hair growth angles of the transplanted hair and scarring.
Large donor scar
Large donor scars are typically the result of poor surgical technique when closing or an overly aggressive harvesting of hair, which creates unnecessary tension on the wound that leads to a wide scar. At Modena Hair Institute, Dr. Yazdan specializes in donor scar correction and utilizes several options including a revised closure, excising the previous scar and employment of a Trichophytic technique. In some cases, Dr. Yazdan may transplant hair during the FUE procedure to camouflage the scar with new hair growth. For greater precision and minimal incision impact, Dr. Yazdan also employs a micropunch as small as .7mm diameter to extract follicular units as gently and artistically as possible.
At Modena Hair Institute a large percentage of our procedures are repair procedures which correct badly done hair transplants. A bad hair transplant can seriously affect a person’s emotional well-being and quality of life, thankfully top hair restoration specialists can repair the cosmetic appearance of those who have had even the worst hair restoration procedure.

As you continue on your hair transplant journey, know what to look for and what questions to ask. Your hair, your appearance and your confidence deserve to be in the most capable of surgical hands.

Read This Before You Have a Hair Transplant

Read before you get a hair transplant
We have more hair transplant clinics today in 2018 than we have ever had before. Yet, modern hair transplant patients are receiving some of the worst results the industry has ever seen. We don’t need to remind you that quantity does not entail quality. In this article we will explore why, with the great proliferation of hair restoration clinics across the nation and the world, has there been a rise in botched jobs and damaged hairlines.
As hair transplants and hair restoration practices grow in popularity and accessibility there has sprung up a dangerous class of hair transplant practitioners and technicians. For many this comes as a shock, that in 2018, with all of the scientific and technological advancements taking place in medical care, the hair transplant industry can be so infested with shady malpractice.
For one thing, as witnessed with pharmaceutical and other major industries, innovation and advancement of product inevitably means there will be those trying sell knockoffs and cheap substitutes.
This dangerous and greedy class of hair technicians seek to capitalize on a service so many people genuinely desire and need. Using flowery marketing tactics and savvy sales campaigns, these inexperienced and unskilled physicians lure in customers for cheap and faulty operations. Many crooked hair transplant clinics will sucker clients in with seductive-looking technology and highly scientific sounding brochures. An obvious fallacy, as we all know that having the best stereoscopic dissecting microscope or other fancy instrumentation does not confer ability or experience on the operating physician or technician. Yet most people often cannot help wanting to take advantage of a seemingly good deal and are thus caught in the trap.
British celebrity and MTV star, Kyle Christie, notoriously underwent an embarrassing and cosmetically gross hair transplant. A devastated but hopeful Christie now speaks about the importance of finding a proper physician who is ethically and technically pure.

Media personality, Yousef Erakat (stage name Fousey), who began experiencing male pattern baldness in his early 20s sought to recover his healthy hair look with scalp micropigmentation (SMP), but also suffered at the hands of an inexperienced and unethical clinic. After his scalp procedure, Yousef rushed to book another appointment at a different clinic to salvage what had been needlessly lost. In an interview following the incident Yousef’s words are an urgent reminder: “I made an appointment [but] I didn’t do any research, I didn’t check any reviews, I didn’t think about it.”

This abuse of hair restoration promises has crushed the spirit and confidence of so many people that it is causing industry outrage. The emotional toll and psychological repercussions of inexperienced and faulty hair transplant work has caused many men (and women) to spiral into a constant battle of obsessive perfectionism and low self-esteem.
Kyle Christie and Yousef Erakat suffered under bad clinics residing in America and the UK, but many who seek a cheaper alternative overseas are even more likely to experience dissatisfaction. Many individuals have been seduced by low prices and sweet promises by foreign hair transplant clinics as well: Turkey Hair Transplant Gone Wrong.
Perhaps most importantly, however, these surgical abuses and empty promises seriously impact and undermine the brilliant hair transplant work performed by ethical and leading hair care physicians.
The hallmarks of a bad hair transplant procedure are always coarse, scarred, uneven, and fake looking hair. The hallmarks of a good hair transplant, however, are much harder to spot, because the best physicians will give clients the most natural-looking hair possible. A seasoned hair transplant surgeon will consistently produce ultra-refined, dense, and natural looking hairlines. Expert clinics and expert physicians are rare, but they’re worth the research to find.
The best hair transplant doctors will also work tirelessly over many years to perfect their FUE and FUT method. Board certified physician Dr. Amir Yazdan, for example, developed his own propriety FUE extraction method and personalized set of instruments over the course of a decade. With every operation he continually refined and improved his method in order to provide patients with the greatest possible aesthetic outcome.

Dr. Yazdan also oversees the entire hair transplant procedure to guarantee proper graft orientation, prevent hair graft loss, and ensure natural hair grouping design. Dr. Yazdan, like other top doctors in the industry, adamantly promote the ‘doctor only’ model of hair transplantation, and stress the importance of expert oversight from start to finish and even during post op.
True veteran hair transplant doctors will carefully assesses hair density, hair angle variance, hairline shape, hair grouping design, and other key elements in order to determine exact graft selection and placement sites.
Luckily, there are strong ways of separating the experts from the imitators. Highly reputable medical forums and review boards such as realself.com are indispensable.

Case Study – Facial Scar Repair via FUE from Dog Bite

In this day and age, we all strive for perfect skin and a healthy body, free of flaws! However, those accidents, injuries, surgeries, acne and even dog bites can leave you with unpleasant scar formations. If you’ve ever had a wound on your scalp or face, you may wonder how the wound is going to heal and whether or not the scar will grow hair. There’s good news and then there’s the unfortunate news…

The unfortunate news is that scar tissue happens to be a lot different than your regular skin. Scars are made up of abnormal collagen piled up in the location of injury. Unlike in ‘normal’ skin, this abnormal collagen isn’t stacked up in nice, clean ‘sheets’ of tissue. The abnormal tissue has a deficiency of regular glands found in normal skin…glands that produce natural oils, glands that generate hair etc. As a result, scars can’t actually grow hair themselves, and in this case, the patient needed some assistance with a facial scar revision procedure.

Now onto the good news (as you can see in the photos) – yes, this can be fixed and hair growth under and through a scar is possible with a scar repair procedure. This case study exhibits a 22-year-old patient who was once the victim of a dog bite leaving with him an undesired facial scar highly affecting the appearance of his beard due to the absence of hair where the scar has made its existence.

Considering the appearance of our face is directly tied to our confidence and self-esteem, this took a toll on our patient’s quality of life and decided to turn to Southern California and Las Vegas leading Hair Restoration Specialist, Dr. Yazdan for the repair of his facial scar. In this patient’s case, a simple and effective FUE hair transplant procedure was the best option and works well in scar tissue. Dr. Yazdan carefully and artistically angles the hair in a manner that you can no longer tell a facial scar ever existed. As seen in the photo below, our patient returned for his 1-year follow-up appointment to boast about his new appearance that gave him his confidence back!

At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan takes great pride in his work and patients. Utilizing a dedicated surgical team, yet always being involved every step of the way to ensure the best possible results.

Wait…there’s even more good news! In recent years, we’ve discovered that stem cells encourage new hair growth making PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma a great alternative to reproduce hair growth through scar formations. Read more on advanced PRP treatments here.

Which One of These is Causing Your Scalp Irritation?

Most scalp conditions will eventually lead to some type of skin rash and unfortunately…hair loss! Whether it’s hereditary, malnutrition or an infection, a pesky scalp condition can occur leaving you wearing hats every day or in severe cases, hermitizing in the comfort of your home waiting for your unsettling condition to subside. Here you’ll find a few common scalp disorders and some helpful recommendations to restore your damaged head of hair.
Scalp Psoriasis – if you have scalp psoriasis you may see red, itchy areas with white scales on your scalp. You may even see flakes of skin in your hair and on your shoulders. These plagues can extend beyond your hairline. Besides discomfort, this condition can trigger feelings of emotional distress as a result of the visible and noticeable flakes on your clothes.
Scalp Folliculitis – is an infection with mainly bacteria of the hair follicles causing inflammation of the scalp. You may see small, itchy pustules on the scalp with its most troublesome area being the frontal hairline, although it can affect anywhere on the scalp. Another term used for scalp folliculitis is “acne necrotica milaris.”
Scalp Lice – most of you are probably familiar with this term in which tiny insects live on the skin covering a substantial portion of your head, eyebrows and even eyelashes! These six-legged creatures cling to the scalp feeding on your blood and unfortunately, these pesky little creatures do not go away on their own.
Scalp Ringworm – a sigh of relief – ringworm of the scalp is not actually a worm, in fact, it is a fungal infection of not only the scalp, but your hair shafts as well. You may have itchy, scaly bald patches often with flat centers and raised borders.
Seborrheic Dermatitis – a form of scaly skin and stubborn dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin disease that looks similar to psoriasis, eczema or even resembles an allergic reaction.
These skin diseases should be treated appropriately and involve the use of alleviating shampoos with active ingredients, topical creams and ointments, oral medication and systemic agents.
Using a powerhouse shampoo such as GroMD containing menthol, tea tree oil, argan oil and ketoconazole (ant-fungal) can reduce signs and symptoms significantly. ByeBye cream can also be added to your remedy as an organic and safe solution for all skin types including sensitive skin. Both GroMD and ByeBye cream are risk-free with a complete money back guarantee. For severe cases when topical solutions aren’t doing the trick, at Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan also recommends in-office or at home low level Laser Hair Therapy treatments exposing the skin to an artificial light source which works by reducing the inflammation. Dr. Yazdan sometimes suggests combining these treatments with other topical or systemic agents to enhance your results.
If you suspect you may have one or more of these feisty conditions affecting your scalp and in turn – your hair, Southern California and Las Vegas’ experienced hair restoration surgeon, Dr. Yazdan can examine your head, hair and scalp to determine the condition and can recommend the appropriate treatments and medications that can help correct and restore your hair. For instance, you may need a sample of blood drawn to check your hormone levels to determine if a thyroid problem is to blame.

These Grooming Essentials Should be in Every Man’s Bathroom

There’s nothing ‘unmanly’ about wanting to look good. Taking care of your skin and hair is just as critical to men as it is to women. “We’re finally at an era where it’s more acceptable for men to pay attention to skin and hair care” says Southern California and Las Vegas hair restoration physician, Dr. Amir Yazdan. Keep your medicine cabinet stocked and get the latest on grooming essentials, skin care treatments for thinning hair and more here in this article.
Use moisturizer with SPF daily
Without a proper moisturizer, your skin becomes dull and dry – not to mention the discoloration due to years of sun bathing without protection on your face, leaving you with loss in elasticity and protective powers. Hot showers, harsh cleansers and heat can also play a role in dry skin. With warmer days approaching, keep your skin hydrated every day by applying a moisturizer with SPF immediately after showering and washing your face. End all goal? Restoring youthful skin to make you look younger – something most of us take for granted!
Get your hair under control
Another telltale sign of aging. When you look good – you feel good! Not only your regular haircuts keep you looking polished and feeling good, but a powerful shampoo can be worth the investment. Thinning hair and hair loss is something most men will experience at some point in their life. In order to maintain the locks you still have, using a shampoo such as Doctor Developed’s GroMD not only prevents future hair loss, but also regenerates hair growth and strengthens your existing hair making it fuller and thicker with it’s rich ingredients.
Use a teeth whitening kit
Say goodbye to stained yellow teeth and say hello to a brighter smile! Whether you make an appointment for a teeth whitening treatment with your dentist or use at-home gels, strips or mouthwashes – a brighter, whiter smile can actually make you look up to 13 years younger! Don’t take our word for it, try it yourself!
Vitamin C face serum
If you’ve ever wondered why you should invest in a vitamin C serum, wonder no further. By boosting collagen production, a concentrated topical vitamin c serum helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and much more! This powerhouse ingredient is a potent antioxidant that fights against the many signs of aging leaving your skin healthier, smoother, and younger-looking.
Kiss chapped lips goodbye
You can start by exfoliating the dead skin on your lips with an extra toothbrush. After showering (and while your lips are moist) scrub away those dried bits of skin. Follow up with a lip balm to keep those lips soft. You’ll thank us later…
Minoxidil/Rogaine
Let’s face it, over half the population will experience hair loss by the age of 40 and many men can start to see the side effects of aging as early as 21. Male-pattern baldness is the most common form of hair loss affecting the self-esteem and confidence of many. Putting together a haircare regimen and using it continuously and perpetually is key. Think of your teeth – you brush them everyday in order to maintain healthy gums and teeth, right? Why should your hair be any less of importance? Minoxidil/Rogaine used in conjunction with a hair loss prevention shampoo such as GroMD works to promote circulation and blood flow in the areas attacked by the increase of DHT (the #1 culprit to hair loss). Invest in your hair – you wear it every day!
Dr. Yazdan has also had great success using PRP as a treatment option for combating hair loss and thinning in both men and women. PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentrate of a patients own blood plasma and growth factors injected into the scalp to encourage and accelerate healing. Hence why you may have heard professional athletes using PRP treatments for a speedy recovery of injuries. In-office or at home laser treatments have also showed remarkable success. Using treatments in conjunction with a hair loss prevention shampoo such as GroMD will aid in getting the best results possible.

Telogen Effluvium: The Second Most Common Form of Hair Loss

If you’ve been familiarizing yourself with the diverse types of hair loss conditions out there, you may have read the scientific term “effluvium” pondering on what that word even means; effluvium is the ‘scientifically correct’ term for the outflow, and anagen and telogen refer to the distinct phases in your hair growth cycle.
One common misunderstanding amongst most people is that your scalp is always producing hair. We hate to break it to you but, it’s not. In fact, each of your hair follicles go through a cycle consisting of 3 phases in which they grow, rest, fall out, and repeat! Another common myth is that your entire head of follicular hairs all grow at one time, yet, if that were the case – there would be plenty more bald heads bobbling around the universe at a youthful age. Rather, your hair follicles are typically all at a somewhat different stage of the hair growth cycle which consists of 3 phases: Anagen, Catagen and Telogen.
Telogen Effluvium is generally considered to be the second most common type of hair loss. TE is a scalp disorder characterized by the thinning or shedding of hair causing early entry of hair in the telogen phase. The telogen phase, or ‘resting phase’ last for approximately 3 months. Generally speaking, most people will have 10-15% of their hairs in this phase at any given time. Another fun fact: Most people shed approximately 100 hairs a day in this phase! With that said, if you suffer from Telogen Effluvium…you may see an inflation in the amount of hairs you are shedding in a day.
If you are suffering from Telogen Effluvium, you are most likely experiencing hair loss or hair thinning across the entire scalp. So, what causes this affliction?

  • Severe stress
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Dietary Habits
  • Physical Trauma
  • Medications
  • Post-birth

In contrary, Anagen Effluvium is seen in more rare cases in which patients have their hair falling out during the anagen or ‘growing’ phase of the hair growth cycle. The hair loss pattern itself, is similar to TE in that the hair loss tends to be in a diffuse manner. At any given time, you can expect to have 80-90% of your hair in the anagen phase. In hindsight, if someone is suffering from Anagen Effluvium, they will suffer from a rapid form of hair loss since a plethora of hairs will be affected. At Modena Hair Restoration, we typically see patients with Anagen Effluvium if they’ve had a cancer treatment such as chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.
Dr. Yazdan has had great success using PRP as a treatment option for combating Telogen Effluvium. Using treatments in conjunction with a hair loss prevention shampoo such as GroMD – keeping your hair follicles in the anagen phase longer will aid in getting the best results possible.

While there may be several treatment options available for men and women who are concerned about their balding or thinning hair issues, finding the right hair restoration specialist is paramount before proceeding with a hair transplant, PRP treatments, and medications.
If you are experiencing telogen effluvium or anagen effluvium and are interested in learning more about what hair loss treatments would be an appropriate solution for your specific needs, you can contact the Southern California and Las Vegas’ experienced hair loss physician, Dr. Yazdan, in order to determine the cause of your hair loss and what your options are for treatment. At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan is skilled in both surgical and non-surgical treatments using advanced technology fused with creative and innovative tools and techniques to give his patients optimal and natural results.

The Truth About Commercial Hair Transplant Clinics

Alike good health and youth, most of us take our locks for granted…until they’re gone! For many men and women, a hair transplant can bring back the appearance of a fuller head of hair. If thinning, balding or a receding hairline has you bothered – a hair restoration procedure is one way to have you feeling confident about your looks again.
Nevertheless, where do you start? Where should you go? And who should you trust? These are important questions to ask yourself before embarking on a hair restoration procedure.
First and foremost: Patients must educate themselves, to protect themselves from the unethical and predatory clinics that are out there. Here we’ll discuss the ‘big name’ clinics; their Illegal sales tactics and unethical behavior that’s vastly widespread.
‘Commercial’ (i.e. large franchise) hair transplantation clinics that have been around for decades, sure seems like a safe bet when considering a hair restoration procedure, right? Wrong.
If you do your research on these ‘big shot’ clinics you’ll find that some of them have been disciplined or sanctioned in over 20 states for false advertising, misleading patients, airbrushing photographs and other violations that have resulted in being penalized with huge fines, probation, and even being prohibited from practicing medicine in some states. These violations are taboo amongst reputable and well-respected hair transplant specialists like Dr. Yazdan and his fellow colleagues. Yet these medical clinics remain the dominating forces in the industry. How so? Because they spend millions of dollars on misleading and deceptive advertising year after year making them long-term repeat offenders.
Men and women are being urged to get a hair transplant even when it’s not in their best interest and aren’t a suitable candidate, because these large clinics have sales quotas to meet in order to keep dishing out millions in advertisement costs. And even with their “word of mouth” feedback being frequently negative, they still have a whole new crop of customers they can draw from who may have seen their commercials on TV, in the newspaper, or on the internet. Thus allows these clinics to keep churning out hundreds if not thousands of other dissatisfied patients.
Now it’s time to ask the hard questions for your Hair Transplant physician. Here are a few key questions that must be asked at the time of your consultation:

  • Does your doctor specialize in hair transplants? If so, for how long?
  • How many surgeries does your doctor perform in a day?
  • Does the doctor perform the surgery or does he/she allow their technicians or assistants to step in and do most of the work?
  • What is the doctors graft survival and success rate?
  • What method(s) does the physician use?
  • What punch size does your doctor use?
  • Is he/she a member of the ISHRS?
  • Does your doctor use travel technicians or does he/she have a set team in place?
  • Does your doctor attend regular training and medical conferences?

Here at Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Amir Yazdan specializes in Hair Restoration procedures and has for a decade now. Dr. Yazdan personally performs each hair transplant and is there every step of the way utilizing a dedicated team throughout the entire process. He is involved in every aspect of the procedure in order to ensure the best possible hair restoration outcome and is committed to performing only one surgery per day in order to provide patients with the undivided attention they deserve. At Modena, we utilize both FUE and FUT/Strip procedure techniques, using some of the smallest punch sizes to minimize scarring while maximizing results. Dr. Yazdan is a long-standing member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery and attends regular training and conferences to stay current with modern medical approaches to give you superior care and a more enhanced you!
As WebMD suggests – Avoid large hair transplant groups or practices that employ or contract physicians to perform hair transplantation under a common umbrella. Avoid practices advertising on television infomercials. While these larger groups have the ability to buy public opinion through expensive and flashy television, print, and radio marketing, this may not equate to superior surgical results.
Remember, just because a “company” or “practice” claims to be one of the largest or has been around the longest does not mean that they are one of the best. Do your homework before choosing your hair transplant surgeon.
Southern California & Las Vegas Hair Restoration surgeon, Dr. Yazdan, can often give the results patients’ desire in a single FUE or FUT/Strip hair transplant surgery, with future sessions to follow only if necessary. Dr. Yazdan personally performs each hair transplant in Beverly Hills, Orange County and Las Vegas surgical clinics at his surgical center, utilizing a dedicated team throughout the entire process. He is involved in every aspect of the procedure in order to ensure the best possible hair restoration results and is committed to performing only one surgery per day in order to provide patients with the undivided attention they deserve.

Hair Growth Cycle and Why it’s Important

Opposed to widespread belief, the human hairs do not all grow at one time. Rather, each individual strand of hair is constantly undergoing one of the three phases to determine whether it should grow and shed. The anagen phase is part of the hair growth cycle or ‘active phase’ when the hair enters a state of active growth. This is the only time new hair is growing. Most of your top hair transplant surgeons would agree that this period lasts approximately 3 to 5 years on average. At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan recommends the use of certain medications such as Minoxidil and Propecia to prolong the anagen stage which aids hair in producing longer and fuller hair, and GroMD Hair Loss Prevention Shampoo which rapidly helps in increasing the anagen cycle to stop further hair shedding.
What Happens During the Anagen Phase?

  • The hair follicle itself begins to enlarge and grow deeper into the scalp
  • When the hair follicle becomes deep enough, a hair bulb forms at the bottom
  • Connective structures called derma papillae fasten themselves to the bulb of the hair follicle providing nourishment so that the hair can grow
  • The hair shafts begin to grow upwards and outwards from the scalp. If an old hair is still present, the new hair shaft pushes it up and out of the follicle
  • The new hair shaft grows upward through the follicle, past the surface, and emerges as a hair strand

Is the Anagen Phase the Same for Everyone?
The duration of the anagen phase is mainly determined by genetics. For example, those of Asian descent generally have hair that remains in the growth phase for a considerably longer duration than other ethnicities. In some cases, scalp hair remains in this phase as long or short as their body hair. This results in scalp hair not growing more than just a few inches. Other factors that contribute to duration of this phase are environmental toxins and severe stress can also affect the length of your locks.
Is the Anagen Phase the Same for Body Hair as it is the Scalp?
As far as their components to growth are concerned, body hair grows in the same way as scalp hair. In other words – each strand of hair on the body are also going through one of the three phases of development. With that said, body hair remains in the anagen or ‘growing phase’ for a much shorter time frame than scalp hair. Hence why the hair on top of your head grows remarkably longer than on the legs, arms, chest, eyebrows etc.
Hair Growth Myths
The good news is, wearing hats and hair ties will not affect your growth cycle.  However, too much strain or tension on the hair follicles will result in a form of hair loss called Traction Alopecia. Traction Alopecia occurs in many African American’s  due to the culture of how they fashion their hair using hair extensions, weaves, dreadlocks, and cornrows over an extended period of time. Shaving your head is also a common myth and in fact, has no impact on the actual rate of hair growth. In other words, hair will continue to cycle through the three stages of growth regardless, yet wont grow in longer or thicker as a result.

Men: Is Genetic Hair Loss in Your Near Future

If you’re an adult with male-pattern baldness in your close family members, you’re probably quietly asking yourself: Am I going to lose my hair also? If so, when will my hair loss begin? What pattern of hair loss can I expect?
You are certainly justified in asking yourself these questions because male-pattern baldness or hair loss in men is the form of androgenetic alopecia hair loss that occurs in genetically predisposed people. You can thank your parents for this one! The genetic predisposition is hereditary and unfortunately, runs in families.
The fact that androgenetic alopecia is hereditary does not mean:

  1. Every family member will be affected by pattern hair loss
  2. Male-pattern baldness will follow the same pattern in all male relatives
  3. Male-pattern hair loss will occur roughly the same time in all family members it affects

Predictability of hair loss may come in future years once research can identify the specific gene or genes associated with androgenetic alopecia. Although the timing and pattern of this form of hair loss cannot be predicted with utmost accuracy, there are well-documented probabilities to consider. Southern California and Las Vegas Hair Restoration specialist, Dr. Yazdan would examine a patient’s male-pattern hair loss and includes the probabilities in his assessment.
Have you ever heard of conditions “skipping” generations? That goes for genetic hair loss as well. A classic study of pattern hair loss in adult men is called the Norwood-Hamilton classification which presents hair loss in seven categories, with additional sub-categories. This classic study showed 1,000 adult men with male-pattern hair loss. Some of their findings included:

  • All patterns of male-pattern baldness tend to increase with age
  • In types I and II, the patterns have the least cosmetic significance and had highest affects on men aged 18 to 40 years.
As you can see in the photo below, Type I is a minimal recession of hair from the frontal hairline near the temples with Type II essentially being a continuation of Type I.
  • “The Monk’s tonsure” Norwood Hamilton Type III pattern of hair loss becomes more common with age. Type III male pattern hair loss plus recession of hair from the forehead (Type IV and V) also becomes more common as men age.
  • Type VII, also known as the most severe pattern of hair loss, did not show incidence in men under the age of 30 in the Norwood study, and becoming more prevalent in men over the age of 60.

With this in mind, your hair restoration surgeon will need to find out if your hair loss is at the beginning or end of your hair loss, whether or not it is progressive hair loss and if so, how rapidly the progression will take place and the extent. Your family’s history of male-pattern balding may assist in estimating the probabilities for your future hair loss. Dependent upon the stage of hair loss and other deciding factors, you may be an excellent candidate for an FUE or FUT/Strip hair transplant procedure as well as many non-surgical treatments that are also available to you. Finding a skilled and reputable hair transplant physician is paramount when considering any hair restoration procedures.
At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan personally performs each hair transplant in Beverly Hills, Orange County and Las Vegas surgical clinics at his surgical center, utilizing a dedicated team throughout the entire process. He is involved in every aspect of the procedure in order to ensure the best possible ethnic hair restoration outcome and is committed to performing only one surgery per day in order to provide patients with the undivided attention they deserve.

Buyer Beware: Warning of Unlicensed Hair Restoration Services

Buyer Beware: Warning of Unlicensed Hair Restoration Services
Technicians & Assistants Illegally Performing Hair Transplants
22nd, March 2018
For Immediate Release
Las Vegas, Nevada

Currently, we’ve seen an accelerated increase in hair restoration physicians preying on vulnerable patients. Reports have exposed clinics in the Las Vegas region in which physicians+ are bringing in assistants, allowing them to illegally perform surgery under the credentials of licensed doctors. At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Amir Yazdan has had a great deal of patients coming from Las Vegas in hopes to repair their botched hair transplant surgery at a considerably higher rate.
ISHRS (International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery) reports hair restoration surgery is at an all-time high with almost 600,000 surgical hair restoration procedures performed in 2016. This is a 60% increase in just two years.
Patients seeking a hair transplant surgery should take drastic precautions and thoroughly research whether their hair restoration physician is an experienced and reputable surgeon and that all aspects of the surgery – from start to finish, are in fact being performed by the doctor and not a technician.
Warnings from the ISHRS caution individuals that may be buying unsafe, illegal procedures performed by technicians and assistants, not qualified surgeons. In recent years, an alert from the ISHRS shed light on the growing trend or epidemic, rather, of illegal hair restoration practices and the severe ramifications it could hold for unsuspecting consumers.
Patients are being lured by attractive and cost-effective hair transplant surgeries, but then there’s the classic “bait and switch” imitation happening where the actual surgery is illegally being performed. Doctors are stepping in momentarily, only to allow their technicians to hijack nearly the entire surgical operation. Leading to countless risks and complications including infection, severe scarring, cysts, low graft survival rate, failure of regrowth etc. This is a dangersome practice and places patients at serious risk. Unfortunately, this problem isn’t unique to Las Vegas, it is growing and effecting parts of the United States as well.
Although hair transplants are advertised as minimally invasive, would you allow a physician’s unlicensed technician perform your eye surgery? There is no arguing that your hair restoration surgery should be any different. Your hair restoration surgeon should be involved in the entire process and much of the work should never be delegated to technicians as they do not have the skill nor the qualifications to perform the surgery themselves.
“No one should think that even a minor cosmetic surgery isn’t surgery, as medical decisions need to be made constantly during cosmetic procedures and some type of medication is administered to the patient that needs to be monitored and, in some cases, adjusted during surgery,” says the ISHRS in a media release.
More information regarding wariness and safety measures can be found at Modena Hair Restoration and ISHRS.

How Many Hair Transplants Will I Need?

This is a very broad question yet one of importance to many patients we see. Some men and women are satisfied with one hair transplant, and some patients may want more depending on many different variables. For example, a simple hairline restoration – 1 surgery should be sufficient. However, depending on the rate of your receding hairline in the future, you may need a second surgery down the line to fill in the lost native hairs.
The complex answer depends on your hair history and several other factors including the quality (i.e. the surgeon performing your hair transplant) of your procedure and your desired goals, you may be satisfied with the results of your initial hair transplant, not needing to return for additional treatments.

Here we’ll discuss the essential factors contributing to the number of treatments you may or may not need. In general, Dr. Yazdan’s first hair loss treatment session is designed to add density to the patient’s hair, provide coverage to balding areas, and to add a permanent frame to your face.
Depending factors on the number of hair transplant(s) necessary:
The extent of your hair loss – There is a maximum amount of grafts that can be harvested in a single procedure to minimize the risk of scarring and maximize survival rate. ‘Mega Hair Transplant Sessions’ are considered advertisement tactics – which is another term for ‘overharvesting the donor zone’ and should never be advised.
The projected hair loss rate – This can be determined at the time of your consultation once evaluating the scalp and your family history of hair loss.
The amount of donor hair you can spare – Typically your donor hair is harvested from the back of the scalp between the ears considering this area is known to be DHT resistant. (DHT is the #1 leading cause of hair loss) Yet, some men and women have thin or sparse hair in this region. An in-person evaluation can considerably help your surgeon in choosing the appropriate harvesting technique whether it be an FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) or the traditional FUT/Strip (Follicular Unit Transplantation) method.
Donor hair characteristics – Shape, size, and color matter. This includes donor hair thickness, shape (i.e. curly, straight, wavy) and color. For example, African American hair transplants can be much more demanding as the nature of their hair can be denser and tends to curl or twist as it grows under the skin.
Medical considerations – There are many medical conditions and medications that can alter your hair loss and the progression rate. Identifying your hair loss dilemma is first and foremost before proceeding with a hair transplant.
The doctor performing your hair transplant – The quality of your procedure plays a vital role in your hair restoration results. Finding a hair transplant specialist that is well-qualified with an artistic eye can optimize your hair transplant outcome.
At Modena Hair Restoration, Dr. Yazdan can often give the results patients’ desire in a single FUE or Strip hair transplant surgery, with future sessions to follow only if necessary.
It would be best to have a meeting with a skilled hair transplant surgeon that could evaluate your hair loss pattern and come up with a master plan of action that best meets your needs.
